<description>&lt;p&gt;MelissaC, the degrees are accumulating.  The number of degrees above (below) normal for each day are added (subtracted) to the previous day&apos;s total.  If there&apos;s a long warm spell, such as since June 2005 the degrees do indeed add up to a big number.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
