  1. Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a high-rise fire on 31st and Broadway, a pedestrian struck by car on Hester and Bowery, and a "missing prisoner" (!) in the West Village.
  2. Charlie Rangel wants to reinstate the draft: "he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars and to bolster U.S. troop levels insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq." Yikes!
  3. Two Long Island pilots are still being held by Brazilian authorities six weeks after their plane was involved in a mid-air collision over the Amazon.
  4. We're still scratching our heads over The Game's arrest for impersonating a police officer, but his lawyers say the police have it wrong and that they've been following him for the past few days
  5. Someone dognapped a pit-bull from a Queens animal-shelter yesterday: "We need to find Gia because she has a sensitive stomach and skin allergies and was on a prescription venison diet."
  6. There can never be too much coverage of the Corduroy Appreciation Club.
  7. Steve Wozniak is talking at the 92nd Street Y tonight at 7pm. Did you know that he routinely carries around $20,000+ in cash in his pocket?

    Some people call it patriotism...

What else would one call involuntary servitude to an entity which is capable of and willing to imprison and/or kill you for not doing its bidding, Samantha T?

Just because many countries force their citizens into some form of servitude doesn't mean it's okay.

    BELIEVE THIS-

It's gonna happen and you heard it here first...

    In the future,

As an 18yr old American, you will be asked one question:

    Where will you serve?

You will have many options between The US Military(war on terror, ie: occupation of conquered lands, which will in time re-focus efforts to building that pipeline across the Middle East) The Department of Homeland Security (securing airports, seaports, public transit) and AmeriCorps (addressing domestic concerns), Peace Corps (concerns abroad):

    1. Active Military Service

    2. Reserve Military

    3. Faith based service

    4. Service to US Urban Communities (in education, healthcare, finance, youth, employment, etc)

    5. Service to US Rural Communities (in education, healthcare, finance, youth, employment, etc)

SOME FORM OF THIS WILL PASS. JUST WATCH.

RDC - if you equate mandatory public service (which many, many countries have) with slavery, you've got some serious problems.

  • rdc

Ironic that a black man is trying to bring back slavery. I think he's more interested in pressing young people into mandatory public service (involuntary servitude) for various public works projects than he is in preventing another war.

Near the end of the article:

He said having a draft would not necessarily mean everyone called to duty would have to serve. Instead, "young people (would) commit themselves to a couple of years in service to this great republic, whether it's our seaports, our airports, in schools, in hospitals," with a promise of educational benefits at the end of service.

Rangel is going to head the Ways and Means Committee -- he has been a member of it for some time and is the ranking Democrat. Any legislation regarding taxation, as well as social security, unemployment, medicare, and a few other family/social welfare issues are sorted out there.

  • fishtale

can't wait to see all the people on the streets protesting rangel's draft reinstatement bill. oh wait....

  • blahl

rangel isn't on the house armed services committee. what is this highly significant authority you speak of?

  • entourage?

Steve Wozniak is talking at the 92nd Street Y tonight at 7pm. Did you know that he routinely carries around $20,000+ in cash in his pocket?

Huh. I always heard that the insanely rich carried no cash because they A) assumed other people would pick up the tab and B) have no idea what anything costs. It is widely known that many actors keep their per diem in their pocket but the real paycheck goes to the accountant.

  • over before it began

Yeah, bring back the draft and the same rich New York, Ivy League, whites will find a way out of it. Rangel is a fucking idiot.

  • andrew

indeed, he has. what's changed is that he now carries a position of highly significant authority

  • "news"

is this actually news? hasn't Rangel made the same statements in years past?

  • IvyLeagueGrunt

    Rangel has a point.

  • Yeahhh

New draft? Canada is lovely this time of year I've heard!

  • Ben Dover

"Two Long Island pilots are still being held by Brazilian authorities six weeks after their plane was involved in a mid-air collision over the Amazon."

Looks to me like we'll have to invade that 3rd-world shithole to free our guys.

  • Is Wozniak, like, an idiot? Letting it be known that you routinely walk around with $20,000+ in cash is not a terribly smart idea.

  • my family paid

    No kidding, My family served.

How many of those "freedom is not free" people had more than one family member serve.

And, I bet these people were in America for generations.

  • "Charlie Rangel wants to reinstate the draft: "he sees his idea as a way to deter politicians from launching wars and to bolster U.S. troop levels insufficient to cover potential future action in Iran, North Korea and Iraq.""

Well, I bet people would not be so willing if it was their own Flesh and Blood serving in Iraq. Reminds me of a co-worker who has a "Freedom is NOT Free!" Sticker in his Cubicle. I asked him what he paid for his Freedom. Seem to be a sore spot as he didn't even know any Veterans.
