Wine Street

We spotted this sign walking down 8th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in the Village the other day and are wondering if anyone has any information on the place. Don't get us wrong -- we're pretty excited about the idea of having two wine stores three doors away from each other (you may recall that is Wine is opening shop nearby), but it seems like an odd business choice. They're both still under construction (in fact, is Wine has been in the works for months) -- let's see who opens first!

That's weird, Is Wine closed their old store on 5th between 3rd and 2nd months ago.

My fellow Gothamists, I do happen to have some info on this mystery. 8th St winecellar is a new funky winebar opening in January. Although concentrating on delicious wines from around the world, it will also serve cocktails and beer. The lite fare menu will be simple small plates also from around the world. It's a few steps below street level, thus the cellarlike feel. Without the dampness. You may recognize the partners as former bartending veterans from Union Square Cafe Michael Lagnese and Jonny Cohen. Hey, that's me! See you all in January!

I can't wait for the opening of 8th St winecellar it is exactly what the block needs. Small plates and great wines sound like a perfect match for any time of day; I can only imagine what kind of magic two Union Square Cafe veterans will bring to 8th street. See you in January...

the 8th st wine cellar will be nyc"s hot spot, just don"y tell too many others>

Hey, I think Johnny Cohen is also the cartoonist from the New Yorker Magazine. Can we expect to see the famous cartoons lining the wall? How about all the celebrities both Johnny and Mike have gotten to know through Union Square. Word has it everyone is looking forward to checking out 8th street. Watch for the opening and do your best to get on the VIP list cuz that's what you'll need to get in once this wine bar gets hoppin.

I can't wait for this funky little place to open. These guys know food and wine and they will bring their expertise in managing a business with them. It will be a place where I can RELAX - unlike so many other "highly rated" joints in the city. 8th Street winecellar will help set the tone for the renovation of the block. This is going to be great!

If only there was a place like this close to NYU when I was hittin' the books. The WineCellar will be a welcomed change from all the smelly beer halls of Bleecker st.. Bravo! Can't wait to sit down with a large glass of wine and meet the trailblazing owners who will help make 8th st. the new place to be.
