NYC Students' Cell Phone Subterfuge
Fun followup to yesterday's story about the horrors that public school kids face without their cell phones, ever since the Department of Education has cracked down on its cell phone ban. As you might have guessed, public school students are very, very crafty when it comes to sneaking in their cell phones. The Daily News speaks to some students about smuggling in phones:
"It isn't hard for girls at all. We just put the phone in our underwear. If the metal detector goes off, they only search your lower legs and upper body." - Veronica Abreu, 16, from Martin Luther King High School in Manhattan. Not only that, girls will sneak phones in for boys and students will also put the phones in belts, shoes and school scaffolding (we're not sure how the scaffolding thing works, but whatever). Will the DOE propose a full-cavity body?- "You take the cell battery out, put it in your book bag, then you stick your phone where the sun don't shine." - Student at Automotive Center and Technical Education High School.
"I put it in my bra area." - 17 year old Jasmine Marshall at John Jay High School in Park Slope.
And many students do have bodegas baby-sit their phones for 50 cents to $1, but some Martin Luther High School kids got unlucky - a bodega employee left with their money AND phones.

Yeah, cell phones. They're the problem. More Draconian rules, please.
You put the phone on the scaffolding, then go inside, open a window and pick up the phone.
yes,
1) Hide cellphone by climbing up scaffolding
2) Go inside school, open window to pick up phone
3) Fall off scaffolding and break all of your bones with also internal injuries.
4) Sue the NYC Dept. of Education
5) PROFIT!!!
"take the battery out and shove the phone where the sun dont shine" ....... there is no call that important...ewwwww
"take the battery out and shove the phone where the sun dont shine"
Do I have to pay extra to have someone hide my blackberry?
How about satellite phones?
I guess I could leave it on vibrate.
Here's a thought, Leave it at home . Think about it , If you have to go through all that just to get the damn thing into the building then it's just not worth the hassle ! It's complete genius to go to a website and brag that you shove your phone up your ass to get it by school safety . Hiding it in your bra's, What if someone from school safety routinely views the Gothamist and reads your post about this ? Really smart !
What don't you understand about the necessity of cell phones? Yeah, if the phone goes off or if you're caught using it during class it should be confiscated, but what's the problem with using your cell phone during free periods or lunch? It is completely necessary to carry a cell phone for safety reasons, especially if your high school is attended by students from all 5 boroughs, as mine is. I sure as hell won't be using a pay phone to call my mom to tell her when I'm coming home or if there is a train delay when I have a perfectly good cell phone to use. And the iPod regulation is just idiotic-- what's the problem with listening to your iPods during your free periods or lunch? Again for the long commute, students listen to their iPods and they shouldn't be confiscated once they step into the school if a wire happens to be hanging out of your bag. And what if your parents can't come during the available hours to pick up your confiscated items? It's a logistical nightmare confiscating all those phones/iPods/PSPS, safekeeping them and then returning them, and it's unfair to dispose of them if your parent doesn't have the time to go pick the banned items up.
You want to know what the problem is "SHS" ? Here we go ,[1] Your there to learn and the Cellphones,Ipod &,Palm enable you to deviate from just that . {LEARNING}[2] I'll give you the benefit here, You don't use your cellphone during class when your bored and want to text your friends . You go to class, Pay attention to your teachers, Copy notes , Do assignments etc. . Generally, You are a good student, You don't involve yourself in any of the things your friends do while their in school right? Ofcourse not , That would make you a hypocrite and therefore make your whole agruement null. Sadly the "Innerspace" called school hasn't changed . Kids still cut classes and do all the things that I and everybody (Most people)did when they were in school. Basically, You may be savvy-enough to use your cellphone,& Ipod during your free period, What about the rest of your classmates. Are they smart enough to take your lead? I don't think so, Hence the ban on you gadgets .
