LVHRD Street Art

2006_11_arts_lvhrdbio.jpg

There seem to be a lot of LVHRD events lately! Tonight they present Bi-FOLD II: Street.

The event will bring together two diverse artists inspired by the same muse, the street. The night will include both presentation and performance, including Brazilian graffiti artist Speto, who will present his work and create a live mural, followed by an interactive performance piece with New York based Graffiti Research Lab.

Who better to introduce these folks than our very own Jake Dobkin. Here's some background info on the artists, though we're sure Jake will be able to enlighten you a bit more in his intro tonight:

"SPETO is an influential Brazilian street artist who has quickly developed an international following via his association with Brahma as an ambassador for Brazil's leading beer. Hailing from Sao Paulo, Speto draws from the country's cultural diversity and sites Brazilian folk art, urban street culture and hip hop as his influences. He is well known for his bold expressive murals and has exhibited his work in Paris, London, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Canada, and the U.S. Speto has created CD artwork for several Brazilian bands, as well as works in animation.

GRAFFITI RESEARCH LAB is dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists and protesters with open source tools for urban communication. The goal of the G.R.L. is to technologically empower individuals to creatively alter and reclaim their surroundings from commercial and corporate culture."

To recap: Indoor street art, Jake Dobkin, and did we mention the free Brahma Beer?

Jesus that thing's an eyesore.

Wow, graffiti is so amazing...

With the clever use of graffiti they were able to make that building look like an absolute piece of shit that should be condemed. and it brings such class to the neighborhood.

"The goal of the G.R.L. is to technologically empower individuals to creatively alter and reclaim their surroundings from commercial and corporate culture."

In other words deface other peoples property.

It is time to stop glorifying this bullshit.

Yo graffiti idiots.
Buy a fucking canvas and paint on that. that seemed to work for the great artists in history.

Any excuse you use to deface buildings is bullshit.

Of course unless the owner of the building actually paid you to paint that crap.

Hooray for vandalism! It's one way to bring down property value.

Will he create a live mural, or create a mural live?

any idea what time you have to get there in order to get in? can you buy tickets in advance?

if you want to hate, hate on the entrance fee. why is it $22? jesus.

Graffiti isn't any good unless it ruins someone's day.

Jeez, who knew Gothamist readers were such haters. Clearly no one here knows much about art, or graffiti, or urban development, or culture, or...i'll stop now..cause if they did, and actually read up on the impact of street art in places like Sao Paulo where Speto is from, they would realize its a bit more than defacing property.

If you ask me, all these brutal new condo buildings with grey brick are the ones defacing the city. The entrance fee might be a bit much, but its $11 for members so I don't really care cause I'm one, and thats a hell of a deal for this kind of show and free beer all night (even $22 ain't bad).

'Who better to introduce these folks than our very own Jake Dobkin.'

Actually considering the amount of real graf people in NYC who know a lot more than jake juggz dobkin, it's quite pathetic he's a host. Anyone who has been at any of the numrous real street art shows over the past year know the difference.
