A Metrocard scam. Gang members. A crowded L train station. Yesterday afternoon, a fight broke out between two men, and a bystander ended up dead. Fifty six year old Toolsie Sukhu, an immigrant who was headed home from a security guard job at the Brooklyn Pepsi plant, was shot in the back at the Rockaway Park Station in Canarsie. Apparently, some men were pulling the "give us $1 and we'll swipe you in" Metrocard scam that escalated when four other men came by. A fight broke out and someone pulled out a gun. Shots were fired and people, including many students from Canarsie High School, ran. Sukhu was shot when he entered the station.
The police took 23 year old Dwayne Holmes and 19 year old Kendall Bennet into custody; they have not been charged yet. Another 20 year old involved in the fight was shot and is at Brookdale Hospital; a dispatcher for a car service nearby was hit by shell casing. A witness told WABC 7 that the gunmen looked like gang members, "They all had Blood flags on them and they was doing the Blood handshakes and stuff so you could tell they were gang bangers."
Sukhu's son 18 year old son lamented to the Post, "It's not fair, I don't think it's fair how he died." His brother-in-law mentioned that Sukhu's wife had recently died as well and said, "Innocent lives are going all the time. They need to stiffen security at the stations."

"A Metrocard scam. Gang members. A crowded L train station. "
Some. Of. The. Best. Writing. Ever.
bring back Bernie Goetz, Bring back Charles Bronson
someone needs to sweep out the vermin and the police hasn't been up to the task
Very, very sad. What a waste.
On NY1 this morning, they were interviewing a girl who witnessed this, and she looked like she was almost going to crack a smile while describing what happened.
I'm sure if there was an MTA employee in the booth, he/she did nothing.
This is a real shame. He had not idea what he was walking into. It seems like there has been a huge jump in super violent crimes on the subway. I was under the impression that they amped up police presence. Where are they?? I saw them checking a teenage girl's purse and shopping bag the other day. Thank goodness! She could've been a real threat, eh? Yes, stop the 16 year old girl with a tiny purse but don't stop the guy who keeps flashing gang signs...
The left tail of the Bell Curve in action ...
yeah, samantha t., you're absolutely correct - those fragments totally ruin this news story.
i wason the L yesterday evening, about 6:50, and they halted service for a long while claiming there was a sick passenger on a Canarsie Bound train that had to be sped through (or something like that, who the hell can tell with the mumbling MTA speakers). is this what actually happened?
I love the names of the guys, you just know they're black.
It's Rockaway Parkway. Rockaway Park is on the A line in Queens.
What did Charles Bronson do with regard to subway hoodlums?
"I'm sure if there was an MTA employee in the booth, he/she did nothing."
(sigh)
Any chance to bash the MTA's Union...
I'm dying to know: Should he have jumped and taken the Bullet like the Secret Service does??
this is what happens when you have 10 years of a decline in crime. Police get complacent. Police officers need to target the real infestation of criminals. High School
Toolsie?
Anyway, you get what you pay for when you live in such areas. This notion that all of NYC is safe is a canard. Manhattan, yes; the boroughs, not so much.
Buyer beware.
These 'kids' were all over 18.
NYC is a City of eight million people, even with the low crime rates etc. there still will be shootings occasionally.
In cities like Newark, Yonkers, Jersey City, Bayonne and Paterson this stuff happens every single day but it NEVER gets on Gothamist.
Also, Gangs have never been very strong in New York ( because of various socio-economic and cultural reasons ) compared to Los Angeles, and every few years there is a rash of hysterical stories in the NYC media about gangs infiltrating New York. But, most of these "Gang Members" in New York are just wannabes idiots who bought a gun and red bandana to impress girls by appearing "dangerous". Most of the real dealers and organized crime keeps a low profile.
Canarsie is fun!
-Jersey City Mafia-
Shanghai has ~18 million people, however the crime level is way lower. Same goes for a lot of other big cities that are not in US. Its just an american way i guess...
Jersey City Mafia... I think these gangs would disagree with you, but that was so 19th century.
Shanghai also has tougher laws and the Chinese gov't is not reluctant at all to execute criminals on a whim...they even have 'execution busses' that makes rounds in the country side
Uh, Yeah - what the hell are you talking about? By "what a waste" I meant what a ridiculous waste of human life for meaningless, idiotic stakes.
Gothamist is a website about New York City. Read Newarkist, Yonkersist and Patersonist if you want to read about those places (too bad there's no such thing as those websites, right).

Yup, thats correct, however NYPD gets higher fundings than Shinaghai police. Same goes for Japan, etc. After browsing through a week worth of gothamist news about NYPD makes you think where the money goes to. But whatever, criminals are tougher here.
Samantha,
Don't pay that person no never mind.
Some people are simply incapable of empathy. Or sympathy.
This calls for more stringent controls of public housing, a veritable hotbed for criminals. I propose that they be dissolved altogether-- but I do recognize their necessity for a small fraction of the citizens who live in them.
Here's an idea: the grieving family should sue the city for sheltering these criminals. I'm betting that the killers live in public housing. Without such support readily available, they would move out of New York forever. Think of how beautiful that would be! Think of how many families will find safety!
I wish I had picked my own cotton
This is just a terrible incident that ended up killing someone that had a family to support . Respect to his family .
I was given a ticket by the Transit Authority for avioding payment of fare on the L Train. These Metrocard Scam gangs break the machine by putting razors in there so your credit card doesn't work. Then, they try to sell you a swipe. I wanted to aviod paying them, not Transit Authority. My boyfriend and I both got tickets for $60 by a police officer on the other side of the gate. It's a big game for everybody. Of course I petitioned the ticket and lost. Two days later, someone was killed. Great. I'm glad they finally caught somebody doing this, after someone dies.
