There is a competition to name the new seven wonders of the world, and the Statue of Liberty is the only NYC mention out of the 21 finalists. Run by New 7 Wonders and with experts like Cesar Pelli and Zaha Hadid on its panel, the finalists are quite a bunch: Stonehenge, the Pyramids of Giza, the Sydney Opera House, Easter Island statues, the Kremlin, the Eiffel Tower, and the Colosseum are just some. Which makes us wonder if the Statue of Liberty will make it to the final seven.
This got us thinking. While we admire Lady Liberty, what about the Empire State Building? Or Brooklyn Bridge? And if we were to name "Seven Wonders of New York City," we'd pick the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, the Woolworth Building, and, uh, well, the NYC subway system, the Flatiron, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the Municipal Building, Rockefeller Center, the NYC water system, the Guggenheim and about hundred other things. Maybe we'd be better off thinking about the "Seventy Wonders of NYC."
What would you pick as the seven wonders of NYC? For more seven wonders fun, this Wiki page has lists of various ones mentioned in the years. And New 7 Wonders will be visiting each of the 21 finalists over the next year - the last stop is the Statue of Liberty on March 6, 2007 (you can also vote online).

If the world decides to make the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty a Wonder of the World - I am moving to Mars. There is no way that the Eiffle Tower or the Statue of Liberty should be considered a "Wonder" on the level of the Pyramids. The list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites is all we should need to plan our next vacation (which can't come soon enough).
I nominate Duane Reade. It is indeed a wonder that a company with such atrocious customer service and lack of efficiency can manage to do business in this city.
What about the greatest building New York ever produced: The Equitable Building!? Now that was a man's building. When they have to redo the entire zoning law because of your building, you did something right!
7 Wonders of NYC:
1. The Subway System
2. The Attitude
3. The Geographic size ratio to people
4. The Maple Syrup Odor
5. The Dirtiness
6. The Architecture
7. The Street design
that unesco site is awesome! :)
statue of liberty is on your site Gary, please let us know your apt. address before the brokers get it
Look, they're obviously not on the level of the wonders of the ancient world but it's a list for NYC's wonders, so I'd nominate St. John the Divine and the Cloisters. Oh, and the Rockettes.
One word: bagels
Thank you.
It's just so amazing to see a wonder of ancient times still standing to be a wonder of modern times.
Like someone said..Lady Liberty and Eiffel Tower pale in comparison to The Pyramids of Giza.
domino's brooklyn style pizza
I'm surprised Gothamist didn't nominate Shake Shack.
The whole of the Manhattan Skyline is the No. 1 man-made wonder of the World, Period!
As Ayn Rand said of that skyline:
"I would give the greatest sunset in the world for one sight of New York's skyline."
"The sky over New York and the will of man made visible. What other religion do we need?"
"I feel that if a war came to threaten this, I would throw myself into space, over the city, and protect these buildings with my body."
Not much on my mind these days, but what can I say? It's not important. I just don't have much to say lately. I've just been letting everything pass me by recently, but eh.
