Bystander Killed in Hell's Kitchen Sidewalk Dispute

2006_11_lopez.jpgA man on his way to his second job was shot multiple times on Ninth Avenue and West 48th Street early Sunday morning. Anthony Reed and Larry Campbell, who had left the China Club earlier, had an earlier fight with some Hispanic men. The two mistakenly thought that Fausto Lopez, headed to a four-hour cleaning shift at a bar, had hit them with a wooden plank earlier. So they "jumped" Lopez, and then shot him, with at least two shots to the head.

Even though the two men ran in different directions, the police apprehended them. The police also found a 9mm gun in a dumpster. The Post reports one witness who "said Campbell tried to stop Reed from shooting," and Newsday says that Reed was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon while Campbell was released.

Lopez, who had been in the U.S. for 25 years, also worked full-time at an Upper West Side deli. He was supporting his wife, four children and family in Mexico. His wife said, "I can't understand what happened. I'm in pain."

Awful. Stupid fucking thugs.

He used to come into the store I work at all the time, the man never slept. He worked during the night and came home to spend time with his family during the day. They never even bought a stroller and he carried the kids everywhere. He was always friendly and did his best to teach his kids English and manners, he never denied them anything. I don't know how they are going to manage now without them, the rent in the apartment they lived in is $1,000 a month and the landlord is unsympathetic. I just hope there are people out there who can help his family, I know I'll be contributing whatever I can the next time I see his daughter.

We need much stiffer punishments for illegal gun possesion and murder. This is just getting ridiculous. I hope the killers and their families burn!

How come nobody is here complaining you only cover the murders of pretty white girls?

This is a sad story.
Random acts of voilence like this affect more people than just the victim.

That idiot shooter should spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Relating to the coverage of pretty white girls -- the location is a gentrifing neighborhood of pretty white girls. Had the crime been on his way home in Queens, I suspect less coverage.

Gentrifying neighborhood of pretty white girls? Hardly. I live on the block where this happened--heard the shots as I was getting ready for bed, in fact. The neighborhood is quite diverse and most of the people who live on my block live in public housing.

Stop trying to score some misguided, cheap political point and offer some sympathy for this man's family.

Petra - do you know if there's any way to send donations to his wife and children?

How long will innocent people die because of killers and the death penalty opponents who perpetuate this problem?

We have to start killing the predators, promptly.

I heard the gunshots at 4:30am out of my window. I live at 49/9 and immediately called 911. Even though I had never heard a gunshot before, something about it struck a feeling of terror inside me. Within 20 seconds of hanging up with 911 - I heard several police cars racing this direction. Those gunshots will haunt me the rest of my life. Call me sheltered - but knowing the story behind the gunfire - its that much more tragic.

As of this (Thursday) morning there is a makeshift memorial on the northeast corner of 48th and 9th, including information about Mr. Lopez's funeral. I didn't notice if there was information about donations for his family, but if there isn't info at the memorial, the funeral home might be able to point you the right direction.
