Yesterday afternoon, a police chase in the Flatlands section ended with the car's driver being shot dead by the police and a police officer injured. Two plainclothes cops pulled over a maroon SUV that had been speeding at 90 MPH and ran a red light. When the officers went to the car, they saw the driver holding a 9mm gun. Here's the police's preliminary account, from Newsday:
The sergeant and officer were riding in an unmarked Chevrolet Impala when they spotted the Mitsubishi driving through a red light. Police quickly pulled the SUV over at the intersection, with the officer approaching it from the driver's side, the sergeant from the other.Butler, who had four children, was declared dead at the hospital while the passenger who was shot in the leg is in stable condition. Butler's in-law told WABC 7, "I don't know what happened, and I'm not going to speculate what happened. But, I know my son's uncle is dead and cop shot him dead." Another family member said the car was not Butler's but a friend's.The officer saw a gun inside the car and struggled with the driver for control of it, police said. The SUV backed into a traffic-signal pole, knocking it over, then lurched forward, crashing into a parked car. The officer was pinned in between.
The officer then fired at the vehicle. Police would not say whether shots were fired from within the SUV, but said that a loaded 9-mm pistol was found inside after the incident.
The injured police officer had injuries to both legs. The police is investigating the shooting and said that so far, the cop's actions seemed justified. The NYPD's statement: "A preliminary investigation indicates the shooting was within department guidelines, which permit the use of deadly force when the officer or another person is threatened with death or serious injury."

your article doesn't mention who Butler is.
He was the black (I'm assuming) guy driving the car
Save the racial abuse crap for a WORTHY argument. Let's see what we got here;
1) Speeding
2) Running a red light
3) Brandishing a firearm
AND
4) Assault & injury on an officer.
Gee, all this moron was missing was the huge sign reading: PLEASE SHOOT ME!
I think we'll all rest easier tonight with this scuzzo off the streets permanently.

Monique Butler said her son was an unemployed father of four children, an 8-year-old girl, twin 3-year-old girls, and a 2-month-old son.
"He took care of his kids; I have to hand it to him," she said, adding that her son regularly visited his grandmother in a nursing home.
Why oh why does Newsday see fit to interview the (dead) suspect's mother? Of course she's going to say what a wonderful person he was. The interview adds nothing to the story.
how did an unamployed father of four "take care of his kids?" my guess is that we took care of his kids.
the fact that he was black has nothing to do with this particular incident. anyone mentioning otherwise is a racist themselves.
the facts are:
speeding (90+MPH)
running red lights
endangering pedestrians and other drivers
endangering his passenger
assault and attempted murder of a police officer(s)
misuse of a vehicle
brandishing a firearm
possesion of an illegal firearm
concealed weapon
another thug down... boo hoo... cry me a river... NYPD just saved the tax payers millions on this thug's would be trial... and eventual release in 5 years.
The Daily News reports that Butler was a fugitive wanted by Pennsylvania police.
