Quick Hits: Citigroup Gets Rights to New Mets Park?; Sheff Gone; Watch Football With Eli

- Newsday is passing along information that the new Mets ballpark will be named CitiField. The source of their information? A blog - though their link to the site is incorrect. Someone wrote into Hot Foot with this bit of information:

I was talking to my father who is working on the new mets stadium and he told me that they just put up a sign saying : "CitiField: Coming in 2009"..also if you didnt know, theres going to be a ground breaking ceremony Monday for the new stadium.
For what it's worth, the name could be worse, but it could be better too. Newsday does say that Citigroup did consider other options: Citigroup Ballpark, Citi Ballpark, Citibank Ballpark, Citibank Yard, Citibank Coliseum, Citibank Diamond, Citibank Field. No news on how much money was laid out for the name yet, but we're pretty sure it's going to be a huge number. This probably means the end of the Mets/Banco Popular relationship too.

- Gary Sheffield can finally stop his moaning and groaning because he's heading to the Detroit Tigers. Sheff was traded to the American League Champions for three minor league pitchers. After the trade, Sheffield agreed to a two-year contract extension. The Yankees get three right-handed pitchers - Humberto Sanchez, Kevin Whelan and Anthony Clagget.

- Monday night, Eli Manning is appearing at a fund raiser for the Eli Manning Pediatrics Fund at the Park Avenue Country Club. Those at the event can meet the Giants quarterback and watch the football game with him (well, as close as you could get in the sports-friendly PACC). VIP tickets are $200 and regular tickets are $100. The VIP tickets get you in an hour early and a "reception with Eli" while the regular tix just get you some "mix and mingle" time.

hmmm, yeah, maybe Tien should notify MLB and the St Louis Cardinals too. We shouldn't be the only ones to know this.

it was kind of a reference to how players always want to play for winners.

i've already sent the memo to mlb.

If you're going to note your mistake, Tien, can you at least fix it in the text?

I think CitiField would be a big win for the new Mets park. Very nuetral...

My friends and I had a pool going for who would win the corporate naming rights; other guesses: Snapple Stadium, Banco Popular Yards, Cascarino Field, Subway Toasted Ballpark.

One key: The Apple must stay!!! [pictured in the artists rendering above, directly behind the fence in dead-center field]

Everyone who is not a Mets fan will call it ShittyPark, just wait!

Selling the naming rights to CitiBank is a no-win situation and would lend itself far too easily to the following puns:

ShittyField, Shittygroup Ballpark, Shitty Ballpark, Shittybank Ballpark... etc.

So the new stadium had better not suck, basically.

Guess they won't be like Denver and retain the old name somehow in there, too, like:

CitiField at William Shea Municipal Stadium

like

Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium

(Though, after a few years, no one calls it Mile High anyway, just Invesco Field, so it's a no win situation anyway).

Hail thee, all corporate named arenas/stadiums!

Looks like Tien isn't the only one who thinks the Tigers won the world series -- check out the last question on the ESPN poll...

Anthony Clagget - that's not a ballplayer's name! What'll they call his put-away pitch - The clag-fire?; The split-clag? It's just wrong.

You all need to stop typing the word "Shit" ! Although it is kind of funny . "Shitty Park" LOL, Come people give the Mets the chance they've been wanting for the longest time ! Now "Shitty-ass Park" that's a winner ! Just a thought .....Just a thought !
