Mmm, Maple Syrup Smell

Is the maple syrup smell back? We've gotten some emails and notes on Contribute:

I know that last year you reported on the mystery maple syrup smell of the city and I think it is back! At 4:30am this morning I was walking from the crosstown M96 to my apartment on 102nd & 1st when I got the hugest sensation to have pancakes (I thought it was from have a few glasses of wine last evening). It wasn't any craving but an overwhelming smell of maple syrup. Is it back??
....
Maple syrup smell, UES, E96th and 3rd, 2 am...
And we feel like someone smelled it a few weeks ago, too. Who knows, maybe the Upper East Side is the new bastion of sickeningly sweet smells, but this is for certain: We will welcome any opportunity to bring out 1010 WINS's brilliant Mrs. Butterworth-Empire State Building graphic.

The maple syrup smell first visited in October 2005 and made a repeat appearances in December 2005, January 2006 and March 2006.

72nd and 3rd Ave at 5.45am -- the maple syrup smell was intense

You should ask the Democrats now that they control the weather...

We smelled maple syrup at Columbia around 3am.

i smelled it on the F train around 9:30 this morning, or maybe that was just the guy passed out on the seat.

Could be testing of a chem/bioweapons dispersal unit. Hopefully by our side. :)

NOTE: THIS IS UNINFORMED SPECULATION ON THE INTERNET. DO NOT FREAK OUT.

It also could be some artificial flavoring plant in Jersey going nuts.

Yeah, my guess is it's the cops trying to figure out wind patterns at street level so they can (a) react better to bio/chem attacks, (b) more effectively direct tear gas at the next neighborhood protest. Take your pick.

now does it smell like maple syrup or like that crap that poses as maple syrup but is really just sugar(as in the Mrs. Butterworth photo shown above)?

If it smells like real maple sugar, that can't be too bad a thing. Especially this time of year.

Beats the usual smell of urine, feces and trash.

Yup -- Ditmars Blvd in Astoria at around 1:30am.

I noticed it briefly on the Queens College campus a few weeks ago while walking to an evening class, fwiw.

The maple syrup smell appeared as early as 2002. I first smelled it on Chambers St, around 10am. I thought it was IHOP's scheme to allure customers. Wonder what it is.

Smelled it on the "cherry walk" bike path on Riverside from 103rd street to 125th street a few weeks ago.

No, seriously...
The majority party has always controlled the weather. I believe they also determine how much 'nationalist pride juice' to mix with the rain. Low amounts in the forecast these days.

I smelled a curiously sweet aroma while riding past south Brooklyn on the Staten Island Ferry. My room mate (facetiously) suggested that it could be esther from drug manufacturing. Anybody?

I knew somebody would try to blame the jews.

Meth ain't gonna make itself

I wrote a song about the maple syrup smell - weirdly, I just played it last night at a gig out in Brooklyn... and I was wearing a Gothamist t-shirt...

I am in Houston right now and I can smell it. Is Gothamist now a scratch-n-sniff site?

Hmmmmmm, Funny I didn't smell any maple syrup in the air ! Damn Manhattanites ! Always smelling shit , I think the outer boro's should get there own scent and teach you city dwellers a lesson! ; ' } LOL

Coming home late last night from a bday bash, me and my prettier half smelled maple syrup very clearly around 4:30am in Carroll Gardens. Seems manhattanites dont get all the fun.

We smelled it in Park Slope a few weeks ago.
