Thanks to the Democrats' victories and their new control of the House of Representatives, Congressman Charles Rangel of Harlem will be the next chairman of the Ways & Means Committee in January. And he's already eying the real estate:
"Mr. Cheney enjoys an office on the second floor of the House of Representatives that [has] historically been designated for the Ways & Means Committee chairman. I talked with Nancy Pelosi this morning and I¹m trying to find some way, kind and gentle, to restore the dignity of that office to the chair."Last week, Rangel ruffled some feathers when he called Vice President Cheney a son of a bitch. The Post devotes an editorial to that, saying "For shame," but Rangel said, "I take back saying that publicly. I should have reserved that for him when we were together privately. Believe me, he would have understood." Yeah, it's not like Rangel shot someone in the face or anything. Cheney did say that if Rangel became head of Ways & Means, the economy could tank.
The Observer had a good look at the power the Representatives from NY have yesterday. And the NY Times has an article about why singer John Hall of Orleans may have upset Representative Sue Kelly in the 19th district. (Last night, Hall was on the Colbert Show, singing the anthem; here's Colbert's earlier interview with Hall.)

I love how, even in defeat, Cheney has to resort to fear-mongering. The economy will tank with Rangel as the head of the Ways and Means Committee? It's a pretty fragile system we have if that's the only thing it takes for it to come tumbling down. Gimme a break.
I'm a Democrat, but Rangel is an embarassment to the party. It makes me sad that he's going to have so much power - he's got dorruption written all over his face in my opinion, and he's easily as trustworthy in my mind as Cheney. At least Rangel shares most of my political views I guess.
The Democrats shoule have been smarter and made Murtha House majority leader with Pelosi as his #2, and she could have taken over in 2008 after the Dems take the big house.
I like Pelosi, but having her and Rangel up front in lead power positions is a big mistake.
Dude: We should all save your e-mail for two years from now, after no progress or insighful measures have been made or taken by the party in charge.
The "vote for anybody Dem just to stick it to Bush" campaign worked at the polls. With no clear plan ever presented, oh hell probably yet to even be derived as of this moment, the Dems are not going to look good in the end...
But, I guess anything is better than a rubber stamp Congress. Ok, maybe not.
dude, Pelosi is going to be speaker of the house, not house majority leader. and it sounds like Murtha is running for majority leader.
Frankly, I bet the GOPers with a future (i.e. anyone not working in the White House) are probably relieved the Democrats won. It levels the playing field for the White House campaign. Now the Democrats have to produce.
Ramone - you're right; sorry about the mixup (also, sorry for my typos).
My whole point, though, was that I think Murtha should be the face of the House right now. Again, I like Pelosi, but most of the country doesn't, and she'll have to go to great lengths to appear to be more middle of the road.
If they were smart, the Democrats would push many of the newer reps from places like Ohio and Florida into power positions. Some of those races were barley won, and they'll be hard to defend next time around, so it would be good if those people could have the appearance of making a difference.
Instead, power will be held by people like Rangel and Nydia Velazquez, simply because they've been around for a while even though they are unpopular with most of the country.
Rangel looks like a white guy who was baked in the sun too long.
I know you guys haven't seen me in awhile. I apologize for missing the word "eying," but I was too busy chuckling over something Jen spent significantly more time on; a joke about Cheney being shot in the face.
I won't let it happen again.
