This morning, there was a horrific accident in Brooklyn involving two SUVs that left a 5 year old dead at the scene. At the intersection of Flatbush and Glenwood, a green Ford Explorer hit a GMC Yukon. WABC 7 says the Explorer "took down a parking meter and jumped a curb, striking the mother and her four kids." One witness told WABC 7, "She comes around illegally, hits the...black SUV, try to escape from that accident. She swerves and comes on the sidewalk and mauls down the whole family."
Five year old Christopher Dorce was killed on impact. Then the driver tried to leave the scene! So another driver followed her and stopped her, and she "supposedly had a heart attack." Driver Bertilde Gabriel was hospitalized for chest pains, but is now in police custody. And Dorce's mother is in critical condition; his siblings are in stable condition.

SUV-on-SUV accident results in death and mauling of pedestrians. Meanwhile, police waste resources to shut down critical mass. Clearly the answer is more SUVs on the road - that way there will be no more room in the street for people to speed or otherwise drive recklessly. oh and blame the victims; what were these kids doing walking on the sidewalk in the first place? what were they poor? they would still be alive and well if they had been travelling encased in 4000 pounds of American-made armor as god (and this city's sagacious planners) intended it.
No one under 80 is named Bertilde. The SUV is a quintessential Brooklyn car. Another price you have to pay for living there rather than Manhattan.
um... SUVs are more dangerous when people can't handle them. What a horrible accident. It's really sad...

Isn't it time to stop writing up crashes like these as "accidents," particularly when we know from the report that the crash was caused by someone doing something reckless and illegal. Many state transpo agencies have stopped using the word "accident" to describe crashes such as these.

How do you automatically know it was an accident?
Even the city's big bicyclist fatality study a few months ago very deliberately avoided using the word "accident." The word is so much more judgement-laden than something like "crash" or "incident." And it also implies: "Oops... Accidents happen. What are you gonna do about it? Oh well." It makes it seem like these kinds of incidents are somehow unavoidable and unpreventable. Using the word accident helps continue this idea that we can't change the way our streets are designed and managed and used -- that this kind of car carnage is the natural, unavoidable order of things. I'm surprised that Gothamist still uses this word to describe car crashes like these.

My heart goes out to the victims and their family. This is just awful.
When OH WHEN will SUVs be made illegal? They only exist because of a loophole in the gas milage laws. The drivers become overly aggressive and when involved in incidents they kill people more often.
Throw the book at her ! It gets tiresome to continually read about some stupid driver doing something they had no business doing . Don't get me wrong, If you can pass the drivers test the you should be able to drive . It's the drivers that think that because they've been driving for some time that it affords them a level of priviledge . On top of that, She tried to leave after knocking over some parking meters ! Oh, and the whole heart attack thing Nice! I bet she'll try to use the language barrier as a defense to get a lesser sentence .

A few newspapers are reporting that angel wings were found near the little boy's body by police responding to the scene...The senseless death of this little boy just breaks my heart. If the female driver who hit the family and caused the boy's death was experiencing heart problems, was blacking out and was on heavy medications, WHY OH WHY was she behind the wheel of an SUV?
