Nothing is Sacred, Least of All Brooklyn Style Pizza

The NY Times covers the turf war between Domino's new Brooklyn Style Pizza and actual Brooklyn style pizza. Reporter Kim Severson actually brought a Domino's pie into Totonno's, where owner Louise Ciminieri said, "Get that thing out of here." Heh! The article is great reading if you want to catch up on the hallmarks of chain-style pizza and what Totonno's uses ("unadulterated tomato sauce and thin slices of fresh mozzarella hand-pulled with just a little salt in it, and a dusting of pecorino-Romano cheese"), what goes into good pizzas, and like a mandatory Marty Markowitz quote. And, yes, you'll get very hungry. Just not for a Domino's pizza.

Here's what Domino's tells the Times:

“We found that Brooklyners like to eat their pizza differently,” said Dana Harville, a spokeswoman for Domino’s. “They like floppy, large slices, and they fold them into almost a sandwich.”

But that’s no different from the way thousands of people in any of the other boroughs eat a slice. So why call it Brooklyn Style as opposed to, say, Staten Island Style?

“Brooklyn has such a big personality,” she said. “It’s a little different than the Manhattan-style personality. We’re really having a lot of fun with the culture.”

Crap, we know what's happening next - a pizza sandwich from Domino's! There's also a quote from Slice's Adam Kuban who tried the Domino's pizza last month and said it was good, with the "for a Domino's pizza" qualifier. And yes, there's mention of the hilarious Domino's Brooklyn Style Pizza website, which shows what Domino's (marketer's) idea of Brooklyn is. The corresponding commercial is the YouTube clip above.

Does this mean that middle America will soon think Brooklynites like crappy pizza? Or does it mean that Domino's has wised up and realizes its pizzas are inedible (the Double Melt almost killed us!) and is trying to improve upon things? And the YouTube clip is via Gowanus Lounge, who points out "Us, we'd rather eat discarded pizza from the curb outside Grimaldi's than call Domino's--this is Brooklyn, after all, and we have more pizza choices than you can shake a stick at--but what do we know?"

the description of the Domino's pie sounds revolting...Domino's is bastardizing the good name of bklyn by attaching it to their "pizza".

ugh.

Grew up in Queens and have lived in Manhattan for the last 5 years. I have always enjoyed the large floppy slices that I fold to eat. Brooklyn-style? Um ok. Guess I and pretty much most people I know who live in Queens and Manhattan are anamolies.

um
they're all thick, abrasive goombas
glad to know brooklyn is so well represented to america

It is good that I didn't find these ads disturbing.
Dominos isn't even pizza!. I'd call it a cheese and tomato bread product, but never pizza.

If you are in stuck in a small midwestern town and it is the only pizza option it is better than no pizza, but any where in the five boroughs Dominos shouldn't even be an option.

It also brings up the whole issue of foods named after places in order to evoke some legitimacy. They never are like the real thing!

I meant to say, "It is good that I wasnt the only one to find these ads disturbing.

I imagine the name "Brooklyn-Style" doesn't really mean that foldable slices are unique to the borough. It's probably just an attempt to differentiate from the awful "New York Style" pizzas that already show up around the country.

You know, new bad imitation, new name. And calling it "Manhattan Style" or "Queens Style" probably wouldn't sell as well in flyover country.

"Staten Island Style", though... now THAT'D be a marketing winner...

I like Pizza Hut better. that crispy bottom from those pans are what makes it good.
that, and eating it with a knife and fork.

Well, qn latoofa, we won't tell anyone that you posting on a New York blog just admitted to eating Pizza Hut. Oh wait.

And that Marty Markowitz quote is great. I saw it this morning. “It’s a multinational right-wing company, mass marketing the Brooklyn attitude with obsolete ethnic stereotypes, not to mention flimsy crusts."

Shouldn't Brooklyn charge Domino's for using it as a brand (which they kind of are)

Where's Marty on this one?!

A lawsuit for defamation of character is what Marty should unleash on Dominos.

I haven't gotten a good pie at Totonno's EVERY time. Sometimes the crust tends to be burnt.

As for Dominos, I yanked my patronage after THEY yanked their sponsorship of Saturday Night Live after a sketch aired they didn't like. Till then, though, I found their pies rather good. I'm not a snob about what pizza is New York-enough.

I despise the Domino's ad campaign for the new Brooklyn pies. Not all New Yorkers talk like that.

I think.

Well the founder of Dominos is a conservative Roman Catholic who has funded some questinable groups, so ending sponsorship on SNL isn't a shock.

Most New York (including Brooklyn) sucks ass anyway. 90% of places use crappy cheese, watery sauce and crust that is essentially dough. Plus, many claim to be "Italian", but it's the same generic recipe cranked out by a staff of Mexicans and Romanians.

I know there are a few good places out there, but most of them are eateries as opposed to the walk-in-walk-out-slice-in-hand spots, so I wouldn't bother defending them.

I stopped supporting Domino's after I realized they gave money to pro-life groups (also when I realized their pizza blows).

Eh, what's goin on!!? // goombah!! those mulanians over at dominos have no idea waht theyre talkin about. we all live in jersey now!!

I agree with dude. I have yet to have a blow my socks off pizza in new york (i live in chicago). I know I'm going to the wrong places as the ones I've been to look like they are fronts for panda smuggling operations (simpsons joke!).

In any case, there's lots of pizza options in new york and to stereotype the food and its people is dumb.

Also has anyone made a joke about the "williamsburg" style pizza? You know, the one that made of all-organic foccacia with brie and caviar on top?

I am so clever.

Any New Yorker who patronizes a national chain pizza place should be ashamed. This is especially true of Dominos because of their crazy right-wing founder.

Why is everyone hating on big chain pizza? I live in Brooklyn, and unfortunately the "real" pizzerias close around 9pm in my neighborhood and then i am left with one choice for pizza...PAPA JOHNS, and that stuff is delicious. It's fast food pizza for sure, but it's fast, cheap as all hell (2 pizzas for like $12) and they stay open and deliver until 1-2am. The pizzas are hot, thick and crusty and sometimes I just crave it. They also come with that amazing garlic butter sauce...and believe me, that butter sauce is a little gift from heaven.

Papa John's - delicious chain pizza. It's a good pizza (not new york style by any means of course) to begin with...and throw in that garlic butter sauce with the peppers...holy shit I'm hungry now.

Papa John's? Are you kidding? There is one on Graham Ave in Williamsburg, and that place is nasty. Terrible food.

I stop eating pizza years ago ! They don't wear gloves when they handle the dough so I don't bother buying it anymore . I do agree that the Boro President should sue Domino's for the defamation . By the way, Papa John's pizza is nasty and that joint on Graham Avenue is dirty . Guess that's why the pizza's that much nastier there .

This goes to #9: Your not suppose to eat pizza with a knife& fork ! It's a classic finger food ! This goes to #14: What the hell is the difference if the founder of Domino's is a right winger ? Does it affect the way they make their pies? I don't think so, Please keep up with the subject at hand .

Hey, at least it's an improvement over their other pizza. And it's about time they admit where REAL pizza comes from. Still, if they expect us to believe that they're making the real deal, they're living in fantasy land. As for Domino's and their founder, he's not even there anymore. Give it a rest.

Talk about suing Domino's check this out...

Good Idea, how dare Domino's link our identity to their crappy product! Did anyone at Domino's ask Brooklyn if this was okay? DId they have a tasting with Brooklynites to decide what "Brooklyn Style" is??
