I have seen "Waitress" twice now and I really enjoyed it both times. I am not shocked by the comments on this page made by the people who are obviously hurting inside from some tragic experience they have had in life. No matter the details behind the death of this wonderful actress, director, producer, wife, daughter and friend the fact remains she is gone but her work lives on through the films she starred in and directed. I think it is a shame that there are people who are so scarred by something that has happen to them that the compassion for another human being is totally disregarded. I pray for this family and for the friends and co-workers she left behind. And I pray for those with hatred in their hearts for people they do not know. Diego Pillco needs prayer as well. He was wrong for taking another life but God will forgive if we ask for it. And if He will forgive "US" why can't we forgive and pray for one another. First of all, I must say I'm shocked at how insensitive and ignorant some of the comments are. We're talking about a human's life here... not a broken nail! No matter how bad his day was, or how spoilt she might have been, there can be no excuse to take another human being's life! That being said, I'd like to defend some of the "rich assholes" as some of you people call them. The reason many Americans aren't getting hired to do certain jobs and are being replaced by illegal immigrants is NOT ONLY because they do it CHEAP! It's usually because they do it BETTER. I once had to have 7 shelves put up in my apartment. I hired an American company and 2 American guys came. It took them 5 hours to put up 2 of the shelves!! and I was charged $500.00 for their time! The next week, another guy came and he spent an hour putting up 3 more shelves. When he found out about how much I was gonna pay, he gave me his business card, and offered to do it without involving the company. NOW tell me, should I have paid another $500.00 to install the last TWO SHELVES or called the guy for cheaper?! I assure you, we wish we could hire Americans that you would hire for simple jobs such as cleaning or renovations or baby-sitting are too busy talking to their boyfriends on your phone, rifling through your stuff or taking 4 times as much TIME to do a JOB YOU could probably do in half the time if you had the equipment, the energy and the time!!! (after your own busy day!) Anyway, so quit rich bashing for once... This is not to say, SOME rich people really do need to realize the world doesn't revolve around them. I'm pretty sure there are really spoilt and rude rich people out there. Just like there are really ignorant and stupid poor people. and just as there are both really hard-working and smart RICH and POOR people. People come in all shapes and sizes, characters and backgrounds. I did not personally know Adrienne Shelly but I would assume that someone who does Indie movies and is an artistic person like it seems she was, wouldn't be exceptionally rude or bitchy out of the blue... Just because this guy turned out to be a murderer doesn't mean all immigrants are bad and just because some rich people hire these immigrants, doesn't make them bad people. BTW- maybe if you people learned to be better hairdressers, construction workers, contractors, architects, cleaning personnel, cooks, etc... the rich would start hiring you and there'd be less demand for the immigrants? ever try thinking that way?!! There is no proof she slapped him, but if she did, that does not equate to killing and hanging her to appear to her friends and family to have committed suicide. Ecuador isn’t even in Central America; it’s in South America. This woman’s tragic death has nothing to do with race and hardly justifies harsh generalizations about illegal immigrants. For those commenter’s stating the victim deserved it – you’re sick, and I am truly disturbed to know that there are people like you that exist. And for those of you blaming all illegal immigrants – you’re almost as bad. I’m hardly advocating that illegal immigration is O.K., but I’ve also heard that the process here to become legal is a bureaucratic nightmare. Regardless, one illegal immigrant committing a crime hardly means that all other illegal immigrants are bad people. Addressing the many problems related to illegal immigration is an entirely different topic and hardly one that has a simple solution. The Ecuadorian who killed this woman is one individual – obviously an evil one who deserves to be punished to the full extent. However, all Ecuadorians are hardly bad people that go around killing. Yes, I’m sure it happens, but it happens here too. Crime exits in every country and the US ranks ridiculously high among industrialized countries for violent crime. Violent crime is not a problem of race; it’s a problem of people. I’ve spent some time in South America volunteering and traveling – and while there are certainly criminals, just like there are everywhere, South Americans as a whole are very warm, giving and kind people. Have some respect for the victim and her family, and if you need to be angry, be angry at the killer, not an entire race(s). Adrienne Shelly did not deserve to die because she was a successful white American woman. Diego Pillco did not kill her because he is an illegal immigrant. He killed her because of rage, anger, hatred, feelings of unworthiness, low self-esteem, fear of being deported, etc. Pick your reason. He says she slapped him. She can't say anything because he killed her. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt. There are all kinds of social implications in this story of the haves vs the have nots. From what I've read above, this story no longer has anything to do with the two people involved. Yeah, there's a REASON a "rich white woman" is written about when she's murdered. She's actually going to contribute to society. god, what a bunch of ignorant morons. thanks to everyone who supported and defended this wonderful woman. anyone who didn't know her should just keep their mouth shut. exactly what sane person, instead of calling an ambulance when they do something stupid and hurt someone, decides to string them up on a shower rod to fake a suicide? he "thought she was dead"? did he even think to check for a pulse?! i can only hope that something good comes out of her senseless death. perhaps women will think twice before staying alone in their apartment/office while workmen remodel it. ask a friend or family member to come stay with you! it's always better to be overly cautious than not, in cases like that. secondly, don't hire illegals or 'migrant workers' as they're called in our BS politically-correct society nowadays, to do jobs & projects such as remodeling in your home. hire someone who runs, or is an employee of, a legitimate company, that you can check through the better business bureau, or who comes recommended by a friend that you trust. should they make a mistake, you can report them to the proper authority, such as the BBB, if necessary. what people fail to realize is how much these illegals have to lose. that makes them a bad risk to work in your home or office. should a confrontation ensue, often they'll strike out, as this person (i won't call him a 'man', more like monster.) did, out of fear of the police and deportation. it's just not a safe bet to hire someone who would rather kill to remain here in the united states, than go through the process of becoming a citizen and starting a legitimate business (or working for one). trust me, whatever money you might save by hiring illegals, the non-monetary cost may be MUCH, much more. it is NOT worth saving a few dollars. it may even cost you your life. spread the word, and adrienne's death won't have to be in vain. to the flamers/trolls: how would you feel if it was your sister? your mother? your girlfriend/wife? or your friend? i can only hope you never have to experience the feeling of loss that goes along with losing someone who was such a bright light in this harsh and ugly world we inhabit.

Wow, it's so funny when something terrible occurs between people of a different race that it becomes a racial or social issue. Why is that? This was a woman who just happened to be white, just happened to have made a name for herself as an actress/director, who complained about noise to a gentlemen (loosely speaking) who just happened to be Ecuadorean and who just happened to be a construction worker. This guy punched a woman and knocked her out!! Wow, he's my hero! Props to that guy! Real men don't hit women. He hit her so hard that he actually thought she was dead. Then he tries to cover his ass by hanging her to make it look like a suicide. People commit crimes today thinking they have all the chance in the world to get away with it or change the story to fit their needs. Evidence speaks volumes! With the increased technology of DNA testing and forensic work nowadays, you have a slim chance of getting away with shit. People think they can change their situation by killing someone and I laugh everytime I read about a person who killed his/her spouse or had him/her killed and is now sitting in jail. Really worked out for you, didn't it buddy. But this was not a pre-meditated event. This was a situation that started out as a trivial, any day event then suddenly got out of control in a rage of anger and covered up. This is going to be as a 2nd degree murder trial in which he will probably get 15 to life - no death penalty people. Why she would have slapped him, if she did, I have no idea. Maybe she complained and he called her a name or tried to come on to her. You guys have no idea! And you're making racial and economical status slurs without knowing the facts? Who the hell are you and what have you done in your life that's so special? I can tell by some of your comments, absolutely NOTHING. What draws your curiosity or interests? What would you rather read - say an ongoing article about Denzel Washington's horrible car accident or a horrible car accident involving a girl named Jane Smith from Park City Idaho? I already know the answer. Not every victimizing story can be on the front page of the newspaper. Or even mentioned again and again in ongoing investigative reports because there is just not enough time in the day. Some stories, like unknown Laci Peterson gained the nation's curiosity and appealed to our sensitivity. But it was probably just because she was white. You know us white folks are only affected by people who are white. Gimme a break. There are racists of all ethnicities all over the world and yes, some are journalists or station producers, so I do agree there can be, at times, an racial inbalance in the media. But again, what sells, sells. My own personal opinion is that being a racist is an expression of stupidity. You are damning another person because of their race?? The last time I checked a person didn't have control of their ethnicity and racial background. I just learned about Adrienne Shelly's death from a radio talk show program on the drive home from work this evening. I am originally from Long Island and have seen the films directed by Hal Hartly featuring Adrienne Shelly. I liked the films and liked Shelly in them ... they were quirky and amusing and reminded me of life growing up on LI, even if the films weren't shot there. Anyway, my point here is directed to the negative commenters from NY who claim a spoiled white b**** got what she deserved for hasseling a poor brownskinned construction worker. I guess I'm out of touch with the real world, you see I work construction in Fairbanks. Alaska ... Have been for 20 years, and the major point most of the negative commenters miss is the guy who killed Adrienne Shelly is working and living in this country ILLEGALLY !! It's a shame we only 'find' the illegal scum AFTER they commit some CRIME against HONEST, HARD WORKING CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES. Fortunately we don't encounter many ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS in Alaska ... The environment is probably too tough for them to handle, not to mention the legal residents won't tolerate them. I only found out today about Adrienne Shelley's death in the French tabloids and was completely shocked. I knew her from Hal Hartley's movies, her image always comes to mind when I remember his movies. I think the comtepmt and hate expressed by so many of the people who commented in this blog is brutal. These are the types of ignorant people who find out where countries are on the map only after we've waged war on them. Maybe now that she's gone they'll be inspired to find out who she was and regret their hateful words, which are just reflections of themselves. Really. The guy is 19, works in construction. I have no problem seeing him hitting a 40 year old in the face and knocking her unconscious. I've seen construction guys get mad on bad days and rip through drywall and other stupid destructive stuff. What doesn't make sense is the hanging. A 19 year old who punches a lady in the face and knocks her out is gonna run. He doesn't know what the hell is going on... he may come back to the police and admit he assaulted her. Adrienne shelly First let me point out that so far all we have are HIS version of events. In his version he stated she was dead when he hung her, which we now know was not true. The ME has stated that Ms. Shelly died from "compression of the neck." Also, it was in all the tabloids for several days around NYC that her death was "an apparent suicide." Thus giving Mr. Diego time to come up with a story. The full results of the autopsy have not been released, and I suspect that Ms. Shelly's death was significantly more gruesome than has thus far been established. In all likelihood the "SOB" comment probably didn't occur till he hit her the first time. She probably didn't have a chance to scratch him until she was being hung from the rod. I submit that when all is revealed there were scratches on her neck and her own skin under her fingernails showing that she was fully conscious when hung. This guy punched this woman and hung her from a shower rod to strangle to death... he is the scum of the earth, and I don't believe a damn thing he says.

The Post and ther papers noted that the noise bothered her. My god, welcome to NYC. I have never lived or worked any place where there hasn't been construction noise at one time or another that's been vexing. Deal with it. But clearly shew was above what the rest of NYers have to endure from time to time and she had important work at her "production office" (producing what, I might ask?), and according to the papers and police report she came downstairs and told a construction crew to be quiet (and yes, they had the proper permits to be working there). When the one worker, who supposedly killed her, got upset she SLAPPED HIM. It's horrible that she was killed -- a true tragedy -- but what's with the prima donna stance and slapping him? She's not the Queen of England, she wasn't even a D list actress. This isn't bizarre? The police say, no they boast, that they weren't fooled for a minute, yet the medical examiner was, and still isn't 100% sure how she died. Reports say that she was discovered hanging suspended from the shower rod (like a hanged person would appear), yet her husband says in a different report that he found her lying on the floor face-up with the bedsheet tied around her neck and the other end tied around the shower rod. Obviously both accounts cannot be true. This is just one of many holes in this "murder case." There is so much contradictory evidence it looks like someone was brainstorming all night to come up with the scenario. The family of Adrienne Shelly did not want her young daughter (or the public) to remember her as another suicide statistic ... now she, and all of us, must remember her as the hapless victim of one of the strangest and bizarre murders in the history of the film industry or Hollywood.

I have been following this story since last Thursday (Nov. 9, 2006) when it hit all the front pages of the news sites on the internet. I followed it because it was a tragic loss of life and appeared to be a truly unexpected suicide of an admired actress. It really did not enter my mind that it was murder and if I was to consider that I would have suspected the husband, who was grilled by the police for 5 hours, and no one else. If you Google her name you will see the many articles and bloggs lamenting her death/suicide. Not once will you see anyone suggesting she was murdered by an illegal/immigrant/brown/construction worker etc. (to use the words I've read here). It is breaking news because it is such a shocking, unexpected twist to the already existing news story. Thank God the truth has come out and her daughter will not have to live with the specter of her mother's apparent suicide hovering over her through out her life, as was Diego Pillco's admitted intent. Excellent Job NYPD.

Certainly Shelly's fame has something to do with coverage of her murder. But what is also interesting is that the police work helped find that what could have been assumed a "suicide" was actually a murder. If anything, one would hope that the police would feel more motivated to look at other strange suicides and that other families would feel encouraged to try to press the police for more results.
