Adrienne Shelly's Murder Caused by Construction Noise Complaint

2006_11_adrienneshelly.jpgYesterday, the police announced that the death of actress-director Adrienne Shelly was murder, not suicide. Shelly's husband had found her body hanging from a shower rod in the Greenwich Village apartment she used as an office last week, leading the police to initially suspect she committed suicide. But they did find an unknown shoeprint in the bathroom, and the shoeprint turned out to belong to a construction worker doing renovations on a downstairs apartment

Diego Pillco, an Ecuadorean immigrant, was confronted by Shelly about the noise he was making. They apparently got into a physical fight where Shelly slapped him and Pillco punched her unconscious. Worried that he would be deported, he dragged her body back to her apartment and staged the hanging. From the NY Times:

Detectives from the Sixth Precinct in Greenwich Village were particularly troubled by an unexplained footprint found in the bathroom. They examined the shoes of everyone who had entered the apartment, including police officers and emergency workers, but found no match for the print.

They canvassed the building, and found that renovation work was under way in some apartments. The detectives matched the footprint from Ms. Shelly’s bathroom to one they found at one of the work sites, and then used the match to track down Mr. Pillco, the authorities said.

Newsday reports that Pillco was 5 feet, to Shelly's 5 feet 2, and "had trouble trying to situate her body to fit a suicide scenario, so he had to step on the toilet, leaving behind the sneaker print."

Pillco, not seen at the 15 Abingdon Square building since the killing, was arrested at his Brooklyn apartment and charged with second degree murder. He confessed to the police, "I was having a bad day. I didn't mean to kill her. But I did kill her." The ME's office is still looking into the cause of death (from the punch or the hanging).

Shelly's family was doubtful she would kill herself, and husband Andrew Ostroy said, "We are incredibly grateful to the New York City Police Department for their dedication, professionalism and tenacity in following up on every lead in this case. We hope everyone will respect that this is a difficult and private time for our families."

For all those sickos who think murder is ok: after you consider resigning from the human race here are some facts for you, at least as far as Wikipedia goes (with citations and courtroom admission from the murderer):

Press reports on November 6, 2006 stated that police had arrested construction worker Diego Pillco, a 19-year-old Ecuadorian illegal immigrant[15] who confessed to killing Shelly after she complained about the noise he was making in the apartment below hers. Pillco said that he "was having a bad day".[15] Police said Pillco had made videos implicating himself in the murder, and as of November 7, 2006 was being held without bail for her murder.[16][17]

Diego Pillco entered his guilty plea February 14, 2008. He said that, contrary to his original story, Shelly had not complained about noise, but rather had caught him stealing money from her purse after he slipped into the apartment. When she tried to call the police, he grabbed the phone and covered her mouth as she began to scream. After she fell, he tied a bedsheet around her neck and decided to choke her. Originally, Pillco claimed he didn't know Shelly was still alive when he hanged her, but in court he admitted to choking her with a sheet, tying it around her neck, and stringing her up to make it look like she committed suicide.[18] The medical examiner determined that Shelly was still alive when hanged.[19] Pillco received 25 years in prison without parole when he was sentenced on March 6, 2008.[20]

This message board is truly appalling.

I originally clicked on this link because I was interested in hearing more about Adrienne Shelly's death. I had never heard of her before seeing the movie "Waitress" last night. After watching the special features, the triumph of Adrienne's success moved me, because I too am an actress, writer, etc & have had plans to turn my own novel into a movie. Adrienne's pristine vision & confidence in herself to be a hands on writer / actress / director in her own movies encouraged me & peaked my interest in what caused her to die.

I thought maybe she died of Cancer or in a car wreck, yet when I read how she died, I truly got sick to my stomach. Who on EARTH would try to cover up a "knockout" with a suicide scenerio?!!

After reading the posts from these irresponsible bloggers, I became disgusted. I had no idea that I would witness such filth & human indecency from so many people.

What has this world come to? I'll bet half of those people would have the guts to actually say those things if it were person to person. All they (the bloggers) can do is hide behind their filfthy little posts & their avatars.

It is obvious that some of the people on this message board have nothing better to do than harrass the curious & slander the deceased simply because of their own insecurities and self hate. I feel sorry for you, if all you can do is banter back & forth with internet strangers about how this "white bitch deserved to die" for slapping a man that may have been threatening her.

Hell, I've slapped a guy before - ever watched 1940's movies? It happens all of the time!!

While we all agree that slapping somebody is wrong, this is not a case of whether or not she should have slapped someone; this is the case of MURDER.

I'll repeat it again for those who are mentally challenged.

    MURDER MURDER MURDER!!!!!!

Now, do everyone here a favor & get a job, an education, or just get some damned self respect.

By making such outrageous posts it does nothing but embarrass yourself; admitting how juvenile & foolish you really are.

Nobody deserves to be killed for slapping someone. If she really slapped him, he should have filed assault charges against her...not killed her. I don't think we will know who hit who first since Ms. Shelly cannot tell her side of the story.

i knew Adrienne Shelly, she was an amazing, beautiful kinda person who had room in her heart for everyone. reading some of the comments on this page made me sick. you would rather defend a murder because he wasnt white and she was? Adrienne never acted as though she was better than other because she was financially secure.

what if this happened to your wife or mother?

which brings me to my next point...how dare you post such hateful things on the internet? what happens when her beautiful, funny, smiling daughter gets old enough and curious enough to google her mother and comes across the hateful things you have been saying? while she did not know her as well as some of us were blessed to know her she still fully remembers her and gets sad by her no longer being there. no child should have to see the ignortant rambelings of people who did not even know her mother.

if you have such sick and mean things to say about someone, keep them to yourselves. some of us loved her very much and ACTUALLY knew her kindness...you should all be ashamed

  • zarigirl

Wow!!! I am an upper middle class, educated, white chick. So, from what I read on here if I make a compliant to a construction worker, I should be killed???!!! I take offense to that.

I think alot of people are missing the point. It was so well publicized because she was a working actress, writer and director (contrary to some of the comments), and the first week the authorities thought the cause of death was a suicide. It had nothing to do with race, but had everything to do with the fact that the media was stunned at such a crime. So the authorities and the media were kind of shocked when they found a different story. If it were Eva Longoria or Nia Long I am sure the media coverage would be comparable.

Just so you know not all us white chicks are racists and we certainly don't deserve to die over an argument, whether the other party is slapped or not. (Pillco admits that Shelly did not slap him but threatened to call the police. per msnbc.) I mean hell, she didn't kill him because she found him offensive, and he had no right to follow her to her apartment whatever the circumstances were.

Lastly, there are some very sick people on here. I have never seen such a broad spectrum of hatred as I have seen on this blog. I am not only saddened, but also disappointed that such a cavalier attitude exists regarding human life. Any way you look at this it is a tradgedy. One person died and another will spend probably the rest of his life in jail because of a stupid argument over construction noise. Unfortunately, the only person that will be getting what they deserve is Diego Pillco, not because he is Ecuadorean but because he took another human life. I would say the same thing if the tables were turned.

G'day, sorry I'm late, but we're a lunar year behind down here.

I don't like to interrupt yer stoush but there's been some egregious miscarriages of justice (aside from the moider).

RE: comments 36 and 39 (nice symmetry, if six was nine?).

Gibson is a Yank and Crowe is a Kiwi and no Aussie bloke worth his salt would want to be confused with those goggle eyed, phone throwing galoots. All REAL Australian men are just like Peter Allen (I go to Rio...)

Now as far as Penny goes, it's true that it is possible that you can get into a bit of bother down this way if you wolf whistle at sheilas in the street from a building site. It's covered under the "Fat ugly molls that resent good looking birds and the men who appreciate them (the good sorts that is)" Act of Parliament. It's funny that a country built by convicts and hard nuts could end up as a hand wringing, anally retentive and politically correct nanny state with it's men cowed like church mice.

To my mind, it's a good thing that a sour bitch with a pinched face like a cats arse would leave our fair land. NYC seems to be full of freaks so I'm sure she'll blend in nicely. But, be warned, she's probably in the vanguard of a movement that will nag any remaining balls (legal or illegal) off American masculinity.

Don't we all have bad days? Even the best of us have those days where even the slightest, most silly things annoy us. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES! Maybe she over reacted (we will never know what really happened on her side) and the guy who killed her made a really bad call...he reacted poorly to a situation. I'm sure if they BOTH could go back and deal with the situation better, they would. She can't though, and hopefully he will have the support and love he needs to learn from this whole thing and become a better person from it. He can't change the past. He can only move forward and hopefully leave a positive mark on the world after making a huge mistake. I wish her peace in death. I wish her family and killer peace for the rest of their lives.

Look - this guy KILLED SOMEBODY. And many of you believe his entire story word for word. WAKE UP. HE KILLED HER. HE KILLED HER. Do I have to say that again so it will sink into your thick skulls. So, did she slap him. No one will ever know, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt not the murderer. COME ON!!!!!!

This link seems to provide more details concerning the "slap."

    http://film.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/Guardian/0,,1942286,00.html

No one seemed to ask why she slapped him, only assumed she was a "rich bitch."

This killing has obviously struck a nerve, as people are still talking about it almost a year later.

For anyone who didn't feel sick to their stomache after hearing this story, and anyone who didn't feel a lick of sympathy for this woman, who is now dead . . . well, you don't deserve to be on this beautiful planet, and i truly hope you are barren and sterile - unable to have children and pass on your tactics of "how to be a bad person"

    you didn't know her

you probably have no clue what it is like living in new york city surrounded by noise, chaos and a handful of disrespectful people

and no one deserves, DESERVES, to die, except for those who kill people and then of course people like you, who find themselves so jealous of a person's financial status and success that they think it is okay for them to be murdered.

i hope very terrible things happen to you

the saddest part to me is, she was just so fucking hot! I've been in love with her since I saw Trust, bitchiness and all. I think in a way it was her beauty that killed her. Combined with her fame and success, it made her arrogant, entitled. She was living in an aquarium sort of world where everything goes her way. When she stepped into the real world of Diego Whats-his-face and slapped him, her ego must have blinded her to the danger at hand, and she died for it. What a waste of a super hot babe.

If I'd just punched a woman out, killed her, hung her from a shower rail, crossed my fingers, hoped to get away with it, then got caught, I'd be racking my brain for something, anything, that might play as mitigation. We've established that my moral behaviour extends to punching someone dead, so - between you and me - I might not quibble over making stuff up (I did just hang a corpse from a shower rail). Race is neither here nor there. If every adult who took offence at someone else's attitude or manners just smashed that other person in the face, we'd be at funerals too often and the economy would collapse. If the guy didn't know that shrugging and grunting and saying 'ah' is how we men deal with passing female disharmony, well. Prison's too good for him.

  • guest

First off, we don't know that she slapped anyone. The accused killer claims she slapped him. No witness and now physical evidence. My guess is he's a liar. We already know he's a killer so why would we think he's being truthful. Second, let's say she did slap him. I'm unaware of a slap meriting a death penalty. He could have had her charged, or he could have let it go, but what he could not do is kill her and then try to make it look like a suicide.

Jesus Christ are you people insane? HE KILLED HER!

So what if she was a bitch? So what if she has a sense of entitlement, so what if she's rich and white. Jesus Christ he KILLED HER. She was a bitch (hypothetically) and he killed her. Do you not understand how that's insane?

Most of you sound like blood-thirsty, sexist, racist, psychopaths.

  • guest

most of the ignorant, racist, sexist and hate-filled thoughts posted here is probably why the rest of the world hates and fears the USA.

most of the posts here are not of any substance nor are they intelligent or funny.

adrienne was a person who gave to the world.

her killer was a person who only took away. he and others like him should not be celebrated.

people need to begin to think. and then be impeccable with their word.

That movie waitress was also so sexist it made me sick. She was a man hater.. I left going, I bet every bitter woman in the world that hates men is going to love this P.O.S movie.

  • guest

    NY POST,

He killed her because she called him a S.O.B

No he killed the bitch because she slapped him in the face and reopened a door that he closed and belittled him by putting her finger to her mouth to shut up like he was a child.

Come on. She wasn't innocent people. She was a bitch. Just like road rage. But blame people for going off if you are going to act like an asshole.

People.. Need to be careful and not think someone won't kick your fucking ass. A man could have handled the beating. She was weak and died.... He didn't mean to kill her. IT got out of control..

  • guest

    he murdered someone.

    therefore, he is a murderer.

    end of story.

  • guest

WAKE UP MORONS! The fact that the killer is an illegal alien is besides the point. And so is the allegation that she slapped him or complained about noise. None of you know what really happened because you were not there. The point is a human being was mudered and it is a tragedy. Whether or not the media made her story "more important" than the murder of a minority or a non famous person is your opinion, but that doesn't make it okay for you idiots to say that she deserved it or that this would have never happened if we made our borders tighter. What would you racist xenophobics have to say if the killer was a legal immigrant and not an illegal alien? That the US should have never given him a green card in the first place? Scapegoating is what you are doing. With all the immigration issues going on Americans somehow think it is okay to blame immigrants (legal and illegal) for everything bad going on in the US. Let's not forget that this is a nation built by and FOUNDED by immigrants. To all the people who made racist about both Shelley and her killer, you are losers who would never have the balls to say things like that outloud and in public. You hide behind your computer because you are ignorant fools. A human being was murdered by a stupid young man. The fact that she was rich, white and somewhat famous and the fact that he is an illegan alien and Ecuadorian, (or as some people refer to all Latinos, "brown") is meaningless. He took her life in a savage way and he deserves the maximum punishment. End of story. All that other shit is BESDIES THE POINT. Wake up and smell the underlying racism/xenophobia people.

ps: Not all Ecuadorians are brown you IDIOTS Christina Aguilera is half Ecuadorian..does she look brown to you?

pps: To #130 Kashka. Your solution is to "send them all back?" Well there is no American who's family is 100% American. The only true Americans are Native Americans who have more of a right to this land than anyone else. You should take a look way back into your family history/ancestry and find that immigrant who first came to the US to make a home for his or her self. And think of how history would have played out if your relative had been sent back where s(he) came from. You would not be here! Stop being such a hateful racist. Read some books, get some therapy, figure out the root causes of your hateful personality and fix up. This country is as divided as ever because of people like you.

You don't have to like or tolerate everyone but stop the hating. Seriously. It is unproductive and a total waste of time.

"The Slap" is one living person's word.

EZ to stereotype the poor as well as the rich.

Everyone has their days of reckless confidence

if there was a slight chance that provoked

    violence towards her.

The insensitivity of desecrating a corpse by staging the hanging

    speaks volumes.
