Yesterday, the police announced that the death of actress-director Adrienne Shelly was murder, not suicide. Shelly's husband had found her body hanging from a shower rod in the Greenwich Village apartment she used as an office last week, leading the police to initially suspect she committed suicide. But they did find an unknown shoeprint in the bathroom, and the shoeprint turned out to belong to a construction worker doing renovations on a downstairs apartment
Diego Pillco, an Ecuadorean immigrant, was confronted by Shelly about the noise he was making. They apparently got into a physical fight where Shelly slapped him and Pillco punched her unconscious. Worried that he would be deported, he dragged her body back to her apartment and staged the hanging. From the NY Times:
Detectives from the Sixth Precinct in Greenwich Village were particularly troubled by an unexplained footprint found in the bathroom. They examined the shoes of everyone who had entered the apartment, including police officers and emergency workers, but found no match for the print.Newsday reports that Pillco was 5 feet, to Shelly's 5 feet 2, and "had trouble trying to situate her body to fit a suicide scenario, so he had to step on the toilet, leaving behind the sneaker print."They canvassed the building, and found that renovation work was under way in some apartments. The detectives matched the footprint from Ms. Shelly’s bathroom to one they found at one of the work sites, and then used the match to track down Mr. Pillco, the authorities said.
Pillco, not seen at the 15 Abingdon Square building since the killing, was arrested at his Brooklyn apartment and charged with second degree murder. He confessed to the police, "I was having a bad day. I didn't mean to kill her. But I did kill her." The ME's office is still looking into the cause of death (from the punch or the hanging).
Shelly's family was doubtful she would kill herself, and husband Andrew Ostroy said, "We are incredibly grateful to the New York City Police Department for their dedication, professionalism and tenacity in following up on every lead in this case. We hope everyone will respect that this is a difficult and private time for our families."

There are some conflicting reports about what happened. Most reports imply that she was hit on the third floor. But the Daily News suggests that Shelly and Pillco had the argument on the third floor; she left and went back to the fourth floor, with Pillco following her to her apartment and punched her there, then dragging her body into the apartment.
And complaints amongst workers and residents, residents and residents, are common.
If the address is 15 abingdon square, there's four permits issued. One is a Gas repipe of the entire building. That sounds like an extensive job affecting every apartment.

Certainly Shelly's fame has something to do with coverage of her murder. But what is also interesting is that the police work helped find that what could have been assumed a "suicide" was actually a murder. If anything, one would hope that the police would feel more motivated to look at other strange suicides and that other families would feel encouraged to try to press the police for more results.

I have been following this story since last Thursday (Nov. 9, 2006) when it hit all the front pages of the news sites on the internet. I followed it because it was a tragic loss of life and appeared to be a truly unexpected suicide of an admired actress. It really did not enter my mind that it was murder and if I was to consider that I would have suspected the husband, who was grilled by the police for 5 hours, and no one else.
If you Google her name you will see the many articles and bloggs lamenting her death/suicide. Not once will you see anyone suggesting she was murdered by an illegal/immigrant/brown/construction worker etc. (to use the words I've read here).
It is breaking news because it is such a shocking, unexpected twist to the already existing news story. Thank God the truth has come out and her daughter will not have to live with the specter of her mother's apparent suicide hovering over her through out her life, as was Diego Pillco's admitted intent.

A mother was murdered. No one knows the exact details. Most of them aren't very important. No matter what she could have done.....she didn't deserve to be murdered. A 5-foot tall "construction worker" punches a 5-foot 2-inch actress in the stomach or face (which was it again?) because she is badmouthing him or slapped him (which was it again?), then drags the body of the actress up the stairs or from the bedroom on the same floor of her office (which was it again?), and of all things, tries to fake a hanging, but isn't quite tall or strong enough to pull it off from the bathtub, so he manages to haul her up from the toilet.
This isn't bizarre?
The police say, no they boast, that they weren't fooled for a minute, yet the medical examiner was, and still isn't 100% sure how she died.
Reports say that she was discovered hanging suspended from the shower rod (like a hanged person would appear), yet her husband says in a different report that he found her lying on the floor face-up with the bedsheet tied around her neck and the other end tied around the shower rod.
Obviously both accounts cannot be true. This is just one of many holes in this "murder case."
There is so much contradictory evidence it looks like someone was brainstorming all night to come up with the scenario.

It's a tragedy to have been murdered by someone who was having a bad day and was pissed off. A woman never slaps a man because he's making too much noise. A woman slaps a man because he insults her in a horrendous way. That's the only time a woman slaps a man. What's really terrible is that we human beings are like animals, lashing out at people without any thought or compassion. It's like, you did me wrong, so I'm going do you wrong. I'm sure when you're busy doing something and the noise around you is too loud, you yell "shut the f-up! before I pop you in the nose!" and don't say you don't do it, you do.

Just because I have another view, a slightly skeptical one, of this case then you makes me slime?? I don't know this actress like the rest of you, so I can afford to be a bit objective about both reports: the one about suicide and the one about murder. They both strike me as strange and the murder even more bizarre than the suicide. Anyone who reads the various reports who can come away from them saying this is some sort of typical murder is crazy ... it is the strangest thing since Sharon Tate, and it keeps getting weirder.

The Post and ther papers noted that the noise bothered her. My god, welcome to NYC. I have never lived or worked any place where there hasn't been construction noise at one time or another that's been vexing. Deal with it. But clearly shew was above what the rest of NYers have to endure from time to time and she had important work at her "production office" (producing what, I might ask?), and according to the papers and police report she came downstairs and told a construction crew to be quiet (and yes, they had the proper permits to be working there). When the one worker, who supposedly killed her, got upset she SLAPPED HIM. It's horrible that she was killed -- a true tragedy -- but what's with the prima donna stance and slapping him? She's not the Queen of England, she wasn't even a D list actress. I'm not defending the worker's actions in any way, but you don't slap people because they make noise while doing their job in another location because it bothers you. She appeared spoiled, priveleged and precious. You just don't go around slapping people because you don't like what they do or it annoys you. The whole thing is idiotic all around.

First let me point out that so far all we have are HIS version of events. In his version he stated she was dead when he hung her, which we now know was not true. The ME has stated that Ms. Shelly died from "compression of the neck."
Also, it was in all the tabloids for several days around NYC that her death was "an apparent suicide." Thus giving Mr. Diego time to come up with a story.
The full results of the autopsy have not been released, and I suspect that Ms. Shelly's death was significantly more gruesome than has thus far been established.
In all likelihood the "SOB" comment probably didn't occur till he hit her the first time. She probably didn't have a chance to scratch him until she was being hung from the rod. I submit that when all is revealed there were scratches on her neck and her own skin under her fingernails showing that she was fully conscious when hung.
This guy punched this woman and hung her from a shower rod to strangle to death... he is the scum of the earth, and I don't believe a damn thing he says.

He doesn't know what the hell is going on... he may come back to the police and admit he assaulted her. I only found out today about Adrienne Shelley's death in the French tabloids and was completely shocked. I knew her from Hal Hartley's movies, her image always comes to mind when I remember his movies.
I think the comtepmt and hate expressed by so many of the people who commented in this blog is brutal. These are the types of ignorant people who find out where countries are on the map only after we've waged war on them. Maybe now that she's gone they'll be inspired to find out who she was and regret their hateful words, which are just reflections of themselves.
It's also a shame that people need to see through such filters as: immigrant, rich bitch, white bitch, brown man, illegal, etc. I've lived out of the country for 15 years, so I've thankfully missed out on the "PC" revolution. If some of you could just make an effort to peel away some of those filters, you may realize this tragedy was about "two human beings."

The Adrienne I knew and loved would have been pragmatic about a noisy situation, accepted it as part of her day that she had to deal with, or would have politely asked this vile creature to be more mindful. Never would she have put herself in harm's way. Especially as a mother and a wife. She was too smart to take such a risk. Diego Pillco is a coward and a liar who deserves nothing less than what he gave.
There is only one person on earth who knows what really happened in this case and if the truth about this death will ever be told. So why don't we all just shut up and have some sympathy for the deceased and some respect for the people who are left behind to mourn this death?

I just learned about Adrienne Shelly's death from a radio talk show program on the drive home from work this evening. I am originally from Long Island and have seen the films directed by Hal Hartly featuring Adrienne Shelly. I liked the films and liked Shelly in them ... they were quirky and amusing and reminded me of life growing up on LI, even if the films weren't shot there. Anyway, my point here is directed to the negative commenters from NY who claim a spoiled white b**** got what she deserved for hasseling a poor brownskinned construction worker. I guess I'm out of touch with the real world, you see I work construction in Fairbanks. Alaska ... Have been for 20 years, and the major point most of the negative commenters miss is the guy who killed Adrienne Shelly is working and living in this country ILLEGALLY !! It's a shame we only 'find' the illegal scum AFTER they commit some CRIME against HONEST, HARD WORKING CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES. Funny. Before I even read the details of this case I had in my head "I bet it's some illegal immigrant a**hole, probably from Central America" and lo and behold, I was right! Yeah, there's a REASON a "rich white woman" is written about when she's murdered. She's actually going to contribute to society. Ecuador isn’t even in Central America; it’s in South America. This woman’s tragic death has nothing to do with race and hardly justifies harsh generalizations about illegal immigrants. That being said, I'd like to defend some of the "rich assholes" as some of you people call them. The reason many Americans aren't getting hired to do certain jobs and are being replaced by illegal immigrants is NOT ONLY because they do it CHEAP! It's usually because they do it BETTER.
I once had to have 7 shelves put up in my apartment. I hired an American company and 2 American guys came. It took them 5 hours to put up 2 of the shelves!! and I was charged $500.00 for their time! The next week, another guy came and he spent an hour putting up 3 more shelves. When he found out about how much I was gonna pay, he gave me his business card, and offered to do it without involving the company. NOW tell me, should I have paid another $500.00 to install the last TWO SHELVES or called the guy for cheaper?!
I assure you, we wish we could hire Americans that you would hire for simple jobs such as cleaning or renovations or baby-sitting are too busy talking to their boyfriends on your phone, rifling through your stuff or taking 4 times as much TIME to do a JOB YOU could probably do in half the time if you had the equipment, the energy and the time!!! I knew her in high scholl and she was lovely and sweet and VERY unpretenscious. She was kind to everyone and always very cheery with a beautiful smile. I cannot believe some of the horrific comments here on this website.
I have seen "Waitress" twice now and I really enjoyed it both times. I am not shocked by the comments on this page made by the people who are obviously hurting inside from some tragic experience they have had in life. No matter the details behind the death of this wonderful actress, director, producer, wife, daughter and friend the fact remains she is gone but her work lives on through the films she starred in and directed. I think it is a shame that there are people who are so scarred by something that has happen to them that the compassion for another human being is totally disregarded. First off, we don't know that she slapped anyone. The accused killer claims she slapped him. No witness and now physical evidence. My guess is he's a liar. He could have had her charged, or he could have let it go, but what he could not do is kill her and then try to make it look like a suicide.

Maybe she over reacted (we will never know what really happened on her side) and the guy who killed her made a really bad call...he reacted poorly to a situation. I think alot of people are missing the point. It was so well publicized because she was a working actress, writer and director (contrary to some of the comments), and the first week the authorities thought the cause of death was a suicide. It had nothing to do with race, but had everything to do with the fact that the media was stunned at such a crime. So the authorities and the media were kind of shocked when they found a different story. If it were Eva Longoria or Nia Long I am sure the media coverage would be comparable.

which brings me to my next point...how dare you post such hateful things on the internet? what happens when her beautiful, funny, smiling daughter gets old enough and curious enough to google her mother and comes across the hateful things you have been saying? while she did not know her as well as some of us were blessed to know her she still fully remembers her and gets sad by her no longer being there. no child should have to see the ignortant rambelings of people who did not even know her mother.
if you have such sick and mean things to say about someone, keep them to yourselves. some of us loved her very much and ACTUALLY knew her kindness...you should all be ashamed
Nobody deserves to be killed for slapping someone. If she really slapped him, he should have filed assault charges against her...not killed her. I don't think we will know who hit who first since Ms. Shelly cannot tell her side of the story.

I originally clicked on this link because I was interested in hearing more about Adrienne Shelly's death. I had never heard of her before seeing the movie "Waitress" last night. After watching the special features, the triumph of Adrienne's success moved me, because I too am an actress, writer, etc & have had plans to turn my own novel into a movie. Adrienne's pristine vision & confidence in herself to be a hands on writer / actress / director in her own movies encouraged me & peaked my interest in what caused her to die.
I thought maybe she died of Cancer or in a car wreck, yet when I read how she died, I truly got sick to my stomach. Who on EARTH would try to cover up a "knockout" with a suicide scenerio?!!
After reading the posts from these irresponsible bloggers, I became disgusted. I had no idea that I would witness such filth & human indecency from so many people.
What has this world come to? I'll bet half of those people would have the guts to actually say those things if it were person to person. All they (the bloggers) can do is hide behind their filfthy little posts & their avatars.
It is obvious that some of the people on this message board have nothing better to do than harrass the curious & slander the deceased simply because of their own insecurities and self hate. I feel sorry for you, if all you can do is banter back & forth with internet strangers about how this "white bitch deserved to die" for slapping a man that may have been threatening her.
Hell, I've slapped a guy before - ever watched 1940's movies? It happens all of the time!!
While we all agree that slapping somebody is wrong, this is not a case of whether or not she should have slapped someone; this is the case of MURDER.
