Chelsea Can't Vote in Chelsea and Other Election Day News

2006_11_hevesivote.jpgHilarious: The NY Times' election blog, The Empire Zone, reports that Chelsea Clinton's name wasn't found in the book of registered voters at the West 20th Street polling place: "The book containing her name was apparently forwarded to the wrong district, denying her the ability to enter a polling booth." D'oh! So she - and probably the other people in that book - had to fill out an "affidavit vote," ensuring that she would be able to participate in the democratic process. The Daily Politics found out that some Manhattan voters got old 2005 affidavit ballots - one for last year's Mayoral race. There's nothing like voting day in NYC! But at least potential voters aren't being threatened with arrest.

Have you voted yet? Was it busy or slow? Did you notice James McMillan on the ballot (last year, he ran for mayor under the rent is too damn high platform)? There was a funny bit on WNBC 4 at 6AM when reporter Vivian Lee ran into Al Roker casting his vote. State Comptroller Alan Hevesi voted in Forest Hills, Queens this morning - The Politicker has audio of what he said to reporters. Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and Mayor Bloomberg voted on the Upper East Side at PS 6. Andrew Cuomo voted somewhere in the city, Jeanine Pirro voted in Harrison, NY, Senator Hillary Clinton voted in Chappaqua, and Governor Pataki voted in Garrison NY.

There are a bunch of sites dedicated to documenting the vote. There's the Polling Place Project, Video the Vote, and Veek the Vote. WNYC has a Flickr Group, Snapshot of Democracy, of today's voting, and you can also tag your election day photos with "gothamist" on Flickr so we can see them.

voted early this morning and was the only person under 90 to be seen for miles doing so. lesson learned today: old folk vote early, get cranky waiting in line, electoral officials should provide cots for in-line naps.

also saw sad alan hevesi ad on tv today begging voters to forgive him for using government cash to fund his wife's driver - he's only human, apparently.

anyone know of a good dem bar to watch the results tonight? A GOP or neutral bar would suffice.

i voted this morning before work, in Bushwick. the place was a bit deserted, and the voting machines were ANCIENT and dusty. no 'kiss me, i voted' stickers!

Same here njm. I voted in brooklyn this morning, and it was pretty dead. I was afraid my voting machine would fall apart, and Im pretty upset I didn't get my sticker, its the 2nd best part of voting!

Did you notice James McMillan on the ballot (last year, he ran for mayor under the rent is too damn high platform)?

Just a note, politicians run ON a platform (what they stand on/stand for), not under a platform.

Just a note, politicians run ON platforms, not under them.

they have "kiss me, i voted!" stickers here? i've never seen one since i've started voting.

and all the voting machines in new york feel/look like they're going to fall apart.

I've never ever gotten a sticker!

I voted on the Upper West Side in the morning. The lines weren't long and the poll workers were very nice and energetic. My husband (who had checked off the "change my voter registration" box when he changed his driver's license ages ago) had to fill out an affidavit ballot.

I voted at 7:15 this morning on the UES. My precinct's machine broke down just before I got to vote, so the poll worker gave me a paper ballot instead. Then she told me to write my name on the ballot. I reminded her that it's supposed to be a secret ballot and folded it up without writing my name on it. So I doubt my vote will count for anything, but at least I tried. Next year I'm voting absentee ballot.

the rent is too damn high party campaign car passed by my office in the financial district yesterday.
it was playing a voting emergency tape through a megaphone over and over in five different languages, just saying to remember to vote line h because the rent is too damn high

and I voted this morning at PS 23 in Brooklyn, and me an one old lady were the only ones there to vote.

remember, if you vote republican then the terrorists have already won!

At my voting place in the South Bronx, at 8:15 AM, I was the 28th person to vote. For this early in the morning, I thought that was pretty damned good. I couldn't vote for Cuomo... voted for the Green candidate, Rachel Treichler instead. Longshot in hell, yes. I know.

Last year for the old machines. Next year we get new ones (and I switch to absentee ballots for good in protest). Going to miss the "thunk" of pulling the leaver. #21 in Northern Staten Island district at 7:30am; no muss no fuss.

Disenfranchisement is hilarious. All those soldiers died to give us the right to have our names scrubbed off the voters roll.
