On-the-Job Con Ed Worker Killed by Car Crash

2006_11_fordfocus.jpgSaturday afternoon, a woman driving a Ford Focus swerved to avoid a bicyclist at Boston Road and 169th Street in the Bronx. But she ended up hitting a Con Ed worker who had been working on an underground feeder cable. Forty year old Yuen Mun was pinned against a building (the picture of the crashed car is pretty grisly) and later died from his injuries. The police classified the incident as an accident, but his family is angry that the 62 year old driver was not charged. His brother-in-law says, "We just want justice and for the truth to come out."

And last night, a 75 year old man was hit by a car at 23rd Street and 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. The car did not stop, and the man is in critical condition at Lutheran Medical.

"We want justice" is lawyer code for "We want millions of dollars." The body isn't even cold yet.

Yes, shame on them for wanting the person responsible for killing a member of their family to be held accountable. Nice! Body is not even cold yet and you accuse them of being Ambulance chasers...

If it was a member of my family, I'd want a thorough investigation of the facts and if needed, charges filed.

Cheap small cars scare me. They are usually driven by first time inexperienced drivers.
OK, cheap small American cars.

I agree with lonesome highway. I'd include bigass cars too though--bad drivers have no preference. The soccer moms in SUVs are just as dangerous once they hit the city.

Can anyone explain why in accidents that result in the death of pedestrians or cyclists, no one is ever charged? Even if it is an accident and not intentional, it seems that some charges should apply either to the drivers or the traffic engineers for their negligence.

Jody, the reason is because the streets are for cars, not pedestrians and cyclists. And even the sidewalks too. Unless a drive is deliberately trying to hit other people, they can drive as fast or as carelessly as they want. It's their road!

And,when you read that the driver "had the light" it means they turned into an intersection and hit a pedestrian in the crosswalk whose last vision on this earth was the word "walk".

I always look both ways twice even on the one way streets in New York. I can't tell you how many times this has saved me from being hit from people backing up the entire length of a one way street at near full speed. It's as if because your car is pointing the right way, the actual direction of travel doesn't matter.

And yeah, talking to the press about justice before the funeral smacks of lawsuit. You have up to a year to file. How about showing some respect for the dead? Almost every post here is talking about asigning blame. Sometimes an accident is just an accident.

"Sometimes an accident is just an accident."

That's true sometimes, but not nearly as often as people make it out to be. The sad thing is too many cops, journalists, drivers and members of the public think this way about traffic safety. They think that unless a crash is deliberate, it's an accident. But in many many cases, there are choices people make that make the "accident" more likely. And until we all pay more attention to that fact, we're going to keep having so many traffic "accidents."

One other thing. In the absense of more detailed information, the proper way to describe these incidents are as "crashes", not as "accidents." Accidents include a judgement, that the event was truly random and no one had any responsiblity for it. Crash is more neutral and describes simply what is known.

I agree with JT that we should call them crashes rather than accidents. Is anyone familiar with the law around this? The last 10 people to be killed this way, no one was charged and that's even in cases where the driver did not hit and run.

We lost a great man. I have know Mun for over 30 years. He was just a regular guy who always helped all of his friends and family whenever he can. Thanks Mun for all the great memories. Have fun golfing and playing handball up there!....we got next alright..........take care my friend, jameson

I just read the comment posted by green and fazio and I found it extremely offensive. Is it so inconceivable for his family members to want a thorough investigation done? Or would he/she be the type to accept this type of incident happening to his/her family members without any doubts or explanations?

I was reading this story and something occurred to me . I understand the families anger towards the driver, Nobodies saying anything about the mysterious where abouts of the cyclist . From my understanding here, That person set off the chain of events that caused the death of this ConEd worker ! I wonder was the cyclist riding with, or against traffic ? I'm not saying it's all the cyclist fault but that person does share in the events here .

There was no cyclist. Witnesses at the location all said there was no cyclist and that the woman was driving over 45 mph. She made that aspect of her story up so that she had an excuse for driving that quickly. She also had an expired insurance card which means that she got away with killing someone and doesn't have much in the way of criminal or civil liability.

Hello Wong. I was just reading your comment and I hope you can answer this- if there was no cyclist, how come the woman go away? There must be witnesses who can verify that story to the cops. This is a perfect example of what happens when an Asian man gets killed in white America and nothing gets done about it- al la Vincent Chin. If he happened to be black, Al Sharpton would probably have been fighting for his "rights" and it would have been all over the news. But Yuen Mun was a good man who lived in relative obscurity and this is what happens. This is the so-called justice that we can only hope to find in sweet white America.
