I think arguement that all the big corporations in Manhattan would flee out of state if they lost their subsidies, is B.S.
1. The talented and educated people corporations want to hire, live in the New York City/ New Jersey metro region.
2.Even relocating to New Jersey is hard, Goldman Sachs tried re-locating their offices to Jersey City (2 minutes from manhattan), but all the traders refused to leave manhattan, because it would add alot of time too their commutes from places like long island. In fact, the commercial rents in most of New Jersey are only a bargain compared to NYC.
3. A corporation nowadays is more likely to outsource a position to India, than move it to North Carolina.

I disagree anonymous. Wasn't it Metlife that reneged on their subsidies and moved back into Manhattan from Queens? A tipping point has been reached and the fat cats don't want to leave Manhattan. They want the address and the 212 number. Make 'em pay for the privilege. Might as well let the back office move to Raleigh because they sure a hell aren't paying enough to staff them here.

Wow, and it took how long for the Times to get a clue? And yet, it still cheerleads for "Atlantic Yards" because guess who is building the Times's new HQ?... Ratner.

As you ride along the BQE you can see no less than 12 high rise building sites...all lookiing exactly alike. Not to mention that not one of them looks like they'll last 25 years. Nothing historic happening here.

Then that goes back to comment number one,
why the subsidies when they all want to be here? I thought NYC was the "Capital of the World"? You mean we were just eclipsed by Raleigh?
time for a revolt, everyone will get theirs.

corporations housing their offices in manhattan mostly house execs only. Without any subsidies, they're likely to be in Jersey, Raleigh, or Atlanta. Besides, the subsidies barely cover the higher taxes and fees that corporations incur to locate here.

I'm no right-winger either. Its just economics.

City government that is a wholly-owned subsidiary of its real estate interests in "not hiring enough building inspectors" shocker. You might as well ask why the rent review board is nothing more than a noisy and elaborate piece of theater.

The city needs to pile on an extra tax for second homes i.e. hit the wealthy out of towners and foreigners driving up the condo prices. Hey, it's no dumber than the commuter tax.

And stop giving tax breaks to corporations to locate their offices in Manhattan. I thought there was a story here over the summer about how everyone wanted to be in New York. If they want to be here then you don't need to pay them!!!!
