Shakira Cleans Up at Latin Grammys

At the first Latin Grammys held in New York City, Shakira swept the top categories, winning album of the year, best female pop vocal album, song of the year, and record of the year. The Colombian singer dedicated one award to Latin immigrants and said, "I hope soon they will receive they recognition they deserve from the government."

Amongst celebrities and musicians like Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Ricky Martin, our mayor (and admitted Shakira fan) made an appearance and showed off those Spanish lessons.

Even New York City’s mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, spoke Spanish when he arrived onstage behind a chorus line of women in red, though he seemed unaware that “Hasta la vista” is a goodbye, not a greeting.

After presenting the video with singer Milly Quezada, who won for Best Merengue Album, the mayor uttered a fumbling, "Yo tambien amo a Nueva York y la musica Latina!" ("I also love New York and Latino music.")

And to wait and watch for on YouTube: Thalia's performance, where she recalled Madonna's Vogue performance at the 1990 MTV Awards. Thalia was dressed in a male French courtier's outfit, was surrounded by ladies in Marie Antoinette-era dresses and had her face licked by a woman!
