Halloween Night Broad Channel Clash

2006_11_broadchannel.jpg

You take some eggs, some rowdy residents, and some undercover cops and you get a crazy riot in Broad Channel. The NY Sun has a very detailed article about the riot between police and residents, where the only part of the story that the police and residents agree on is that a bunch of kids egged an unmarked police car. Which was only in the area to respond to earlier calls about property being egged!

After seeing egg on the car, the police questioned Patricia Rich, then her son Patrick jumped on a detective's back and all hell broke loose. The Daily News' account says that the detective, Marques Stewart, used his baton to defend himself from Rich as Patricia Rich yelled, "F--- you, n----r." A crowd of people surrounded the detective and other officers, and the NYPD says police handled the situation appropriately, using their batons to "take control" of the situation. The Sun spoke to a friend of the Rich family:

A resident of the neighborhood and friend of the Rich family, John Walsh, 22, gave a different account. He said that the detective "started flipping out" when he saw the eggs hit his car. Mrs. Rich, who was drinking coffee on the corner, was the closest person to his car and so he began questioning her first, he said. When she refused to tell him who did it, he attacked her — and when Mr. Rich saw his mother being attacked, he jumped on the back of the detective, not knowing he was from the police department, Mr. Walsh said.

"He just kept grabbing her by the hair," Mr. Walsh said of the detective. "They arrested everyone who was trying to help her."

However, the police and observers do say that some people were "throwing eggs and yelling racist slurs" (NY Sun) in the crowd of over 100 people. Patricia Rich's sister Margaret (mother of Robert Glade who was arrested for inciting the crowd) said that the fight was not about race but about police brutality. She told the Daily News, "I went to get a slice of pizza and when I came out I saw this cop. He's got my sister by her hair and he's whacking my sister."

Four people in total were arrested: Glade, Nicholas Stack (for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest), Patricia Rich, and Patrick Rich. Side note about Patrick Rich: When the police tried to arrest Patrick Rich, he "ran into the Jamaica Bay, where he remained waist-deep until police convinced him to surrender" and he is also connected to a possibly similar assault on St. Patrick's Day. On the police side, Internal Affairs is investigating, and Detective Stewart apparently "punched a youth with his pistol, knocking out several of his teeth" in 1997, according to the NY Sun.

"F--- you, n----r."

What? you can't even spell it out? Gotta love Broad Channel ... it's like the South of New York City ... worse than Staten Island.

Broad Channel: Jamaica Bay white trash—I wouldn't expect anything less.

Typical Broad Channel, that place needs to be buried under Jamaica Bay. I have never encountered the most backward, ignorant and racist people. I hope the cops lock everyone up.

Maybe people should stop worrying about race and worry about the fact that one of New York City's "Finest" thinks it is appropriate to beat a woman because he doesn't like the answer to his question.

Disgruntled Citizen is right. Too many police officers are mindless thugs. Perhaps we could establish a democracy where we can do something about that? Who's in?

I'm in. Arrogance has completely taken over the NYPD. I feel bad for the officers that still attempt to uphold the law. As a person who feels that they are too good to be associated with this community, "outtarockaway" should make an attempt to form a proper sentence before they talk sh*t about a respectable community populated by decent citizens.

*before they talk sh*t about a respectable community populated by decent citizens.*

right. decent citizens scream "nigger" they also attack the poice and hang confederate flags off their homes.

Decent; de‧cent  –adjective
1. conforming to the recognized standard of propriety, good taste, modesty, etc., as in behavior or speech.

the behavior of these people, is a far cry from decent. a better descriptive would be: lacking and disrespectful.

I would like to say as someone who lives here how I am ashamed of the people who are judging my whole town on some stories you heard in the news. If there was any racism here it was the officer who beat a women then beat the kid who was trying to help her, as for the n word the cop added that to help his case he knows people jump when they hear that word was used. yes there was a egg thrown and yes it was wrong but I am positive it was not the only one thrown on Halloween,I think a cop acting this way over a egg was looking for a reason to do something. In other towns they call it Halloween fun. We are no more racist here then anywhere else and there are no flags flown here besides the American one. White trash I think not, the town is firefighters, cops, or other working class people. Dont judge on a story in the news you should know they dont always tell the whole story or the truth. Cant you see in the picture there was no crowd no one jumped him he over reacted. Do you think the cops are going to tell you that, they protect there own. This police officers has many complaints about him over reacting, but they wont tell you that. They also dont tell you they will not accept any eye witness reports because they do not want the truth out it does not look good for them. This cop should not be on the streets. Why is racism only a one way street open your eyes. look at the picture agin with your eyes open this time.
