There's nothing like a NY Post vs. NY Daily News pissing match! Yesterday, the Audit Bureau of Circulations announced the latest circulation figures, the Post now has a daily circulation of 704,011 copies (a 5% increase over last year) while the News is at 693,382 (1% increase).
This makes the NY Post the fifth largest paper in the country - even ahead of the Washington Post. And the Post wasted no time in proclaiming this - using the News Corp.-owned Jumbotron in Times Square yesterday and today's Post cover to hype the news. In the Post's article about their exciting news, "The new circulation figures, reported in a publisher's statement and subject to audit, prove what savvy New Yorkers have known for years - the Daily News is yesterday's news." There's even a top 10 list why the Post is better!
On the other hand, the Daily News tries to save face by noting that it's combined weekday-and-weekend circ is still tops in the New York metro area. And the News' Sunday circulation is 780,196 over the Post's 427,264. From the News article: "The error-prone Post, which loses tens of millions of dollars annually, sells for a discounted 25 cents." And News editor-in-chief Martin Dunn said, "If you'd lost $300 million over the past five years, spent $200 million on new presses, carpet-bombed neighborhoods with free copies and lost fortunes to sell a few thousand papers in Las Vegas and Los Angeles, you'd be desperate to celebrate creeping a few copies ahead of us." Well, desperate is as desperate does.
Which do you prefer - the Daily News or Post?

The Post is seriously a piece of garbage. I was only made aware recently that the Post is owned by the same bastards that own Fox News. Go figure!
NY Post = Fox News. Every copy you buy is a vote for Bill O'Reilly.
The Post is fun to read but is not a "real" newspaper, as far as I'm concerned. It's basically just a collection of sports and entertainment news along opinion pieces, with just a few (often sensationalist) news items tossed in for good measure. About its only saving grace is a surprisingly comprehensive business section. The Daily News is far from perfect, but at least is making a concerned attempt at responsible journalism.
I read the Post for shits and giggles, and the Top Ten List is hilarious. Although you have to up to date with their long feud to fully appreciate it.
I enjoy the Post because of the entertainment value. Where else can a stabbing be recounted as "plunging the knife repeated in the torso twenty times"? Take it for what it is, crap, but its very entertaining crap and livens up my day.
The News. It's not a particularly good paper, but it's a million times better than the Times for staying in touch with what's going on in this town. As for the Post, well. The free-Post promos are a decent idea, but they don't go far enough: if you want me to read that piece of crap, you need to pay me.
I trust the Weekly World News more than either of those rags.
Both the Post and the Daily News have been giving away papers for free...esp. the Post.
I will bet you they count the given away papers as circulation.
Neither! Gothamist all the way!
It's worth noting that both the Post and Daily News are VANITY publications -- the Post for Murdoch, and the DN for Mort Zuckerman.
Also worth noting that the Post operates at a significant loss -- on purpose. The DN is at least profitable.
They both suck, however.
I like the post cause it's easy to decipher. The daily News has a wishy washy way of reporting. The post always tells you lies so if you just think the opposite of what they write it's the real truth. Like "George Bush is doing a good job" means he's fucking up the country. When they say "Free radiation vibes" that means that we are under nuclear attack.
The Post and the Daily news is there purely for entertainment purposes.
If I were stuck on a desert island, I wouldn't be focusing on reading a damned newspaper of any kind... I'd be focused on my volleyball for intelligent conversation.
None of the above. I moved to NY from DC seven years ago, but I never gave up reading The Washington Post. It's a better paper than either of the tabloids, and I think it's more interesting than the Times.
The Daily News and the Post both are awful papers. Rupert Murdoch, however, is a slightly worse person than Mort Zuckerman, and the Post reflects that.
I say chain 'em both together and sink them in the Newtown Creek.
If I had a parakeet or a canarie, I wouldn't use a free copy of the Post to line the cage. Let the republicans they toady to buy their lousy, third-rate rag.
The Daily News is the better paper.
It has a better grasp of the pulse of the city and one of the best comic sections in the nation. Plus it doesn't have an overt agenda like Pravda, I mean the Post. The News has some good columists, like Denis Hammil and a much better sports section.
Now, the Times really lacks on the Metro section and I find myself reading things in the Times a day after I read them in the News.
I read the post online for their horoscopes. It's like Sally Brompton wrote that leo horoscope personally for me!
I was removing tile in an old kitchen and found some old newspapers used underneath years ago. The papers were NYC productions. They are the same as the Daily News and the Post today.
Accept they are intergrated and blacks, latino, and Asians share the crime story. Same ads, same murders, same politics, same car ads, same beauty products, movie listing. Just from a different era. Times haven't changed. The same rags floated around the city 100 years ago. It doesn't matter which one is better. What is important is that the owners know how the find the most silly stories and sensational scandals for readers. There are enough people to read either paper and keep them both on top from time to time. It is like the Yankees and the Mets.
Newsday is the best.
What about Street News?! It's the best!
Jojo, you cracked me up. I'll be sure to look out for those "free radiation vibes"!
The Post is good for cleaning windows, lining kitty litter boxes, and general laughs and giggles.
Echo KB's post above - The Daily News with its working class sentiments is better than the Post by a mile.
I read the Post only if they hand out free "promotional copies." And then only if they come with coupons. They should start including gift vouchers so that their readers get paid for wasting their time with this stuff.
You can tell what a persons choice as afr as political policy is by the paper they read . Most people that read the Post are Elephants . Most that read the Daily News are donkies, So I guess were justa bunch of "Asses,& Shits"!! Seriously I hope the Post can get there act together and stop following the Daily News . I meen it must get tiring bringing up the rear . I guess that Daily News ass smells pretty good !
Ohh, By the way happy Halloween to all of you "Believers" ! Don't front, I know your out there !
Dennis Hammil WAS a writer for Pravda-he hasn't seen idiocy that he doesn't like.
As for the Times.... Jayson Blair.... revealing the SWIFT program and then determining that it DIDN'T violate anyone's rights....writing that the Cards beat the Detroit Lions to win the World Series! Yeah.... the Times is professional, not at all liberal and I'm a Chinese Rocket pilot!
