Wow, Halloween and the start of CMJ all in one night. There will be lots of ear candy, and of course regular candy, all over the city tonight. So if you aren't checking out the Halloween Parade, here are some other options:
THEATER: The Fortune Teller is a fascinating marionette play written and directed by Erik Sanko, with music by Sanko and Danny Elfman. Seven unusual characters are invited to the spectacular mansion of a late millionaire industrialist and informed they've been included in his will. Upon arrival, they learn that their inheritances will be based not on a will, but on the readings of a fortune teller. One by one, they each get what they have coming to them - BWAH HAH HAH HAH!. The Times pronounces it "an anomaly in the sphere of marionette theater, or any theater, with a level of intricacy most commonly seen in fine art." Although The Fortune Teller is sold out through the end of the run, we suggest you try your luck with the waitlist at 4pm. Since HERE is located right at the start of the Halloween Parade, you can watch the costume hordes amass until 8:30, when the waitlist names are read off. - John Del Signore
9pm // HERE [145 6th Ave (Between Spring and Broome)] // Tickets are $20
PUPPETS: What's scarier than puppets (okay, besides clowns...or puppet clowns!)? Nothing really, so spend tonight at the shadow puppet performance of Washington Irving's Sleepy Hollow, part of the 'Drama of Works' puppet theatre company. There will be a quilted screen and a chamber ensemble to help set the mood.
5:30 and 7:30pm // Abrons Art Center at Henry Street Settlement [466 Grand St] // $5
PARTY: The Halloween extravaganza for Motherfucker is happening tonight. Morningwood (remember them?) are playing and a "secret band" is going on at 1:30am. In addition, the night will be made fabulous by a million different emcee's, deejays and hosts. The theme is a tribute to "Carrie", so get out the pig blood!
10pm // 515 W 18th St // $15 to $25
COMEDY: If you feel like laughing off Halloween, head to "I Ain't Fraid of No Jokes", starring jokesters Max Silvestri, Joe Mande, and Noah Garfinkel. We're guessing there's some sort of Halloween theme, due to the Ghostbusters reference in the title.
10pm // Rififi [332 E 11th St] // Free
MUSIC: Seriously, so many shows. CMJ has offically started. You may want to scan OMR to see what suits you. Our suggestion, if you want to avoid the sold out shows and a massive line, head over to A Place to Bury Strangers, Lions & Tigers, Franco V. & The High Class Elite, The Films. That will likely be packed too, but the open bar will make it all better.
8:30pm // 175 Attorney Street // $15
