Bloomberg Flexes His Political Muscle in Connecticut

2006_10_bloomberglieber.jpg

This morning, Mayor Bloomberg did a meet-and-greet commuters, but it was at a Metro-North train station in Connecticut! He was in Stamford to help Senator Joe Lieberman's re-election campaign. Mayor B said, ''I think the voters of Connecticut understand they need proven independent leadership. Joe Lieberman provides that. I think people of all parties are just tired of the political bickering.''

You have to be impressed with Bloomberg's faith in Joe: He's stumped for the incumbent in Chicago, he's loaning his own re-election team to Lieberman, and is having a fundraiser for him in the city this week. But will Connecticut voters think, "Hey, Mike likes him, I'll vote for Joe again, then!"?

Lieberman is leading Democratic candidate Ned Lamont by the double digits, according to the AP. And Hizzoner also said once again he was't thinking about running for president in 2008. Yeah, let's see what he says when both frontrunners in the Democratic and Republican parties start to emerge next year.

hizzoner refers to mayor daley the first in chicago. I don't know why you new yorkers keep using it.

Alos, isn't bloomberg going to get into trouble crossing party lines like this?

Setting aside Lieberman's position on Iraq, when are the Democrats (Dean, Reid, Kerry and Pelosi in particular) going to wake up and see that America is not as far to the left as they think it is? If a Democrats like Bloomberg can go outside the party and beat the more liberal candidate - which is exactly what Lieberman is going to do - why does the national party insist on throwing election after election? Democrats could have swept in 2004 with a moderate message. Did anyone learn anything from Bill Clinton?

Democrats will win next week - by default. And then they'll mess it al up by claiming a mandate and pushing an agenda nobody wants and didn't really vote for.

Matty,

Bloomberg was a Democrat and ran as a Republican to avoid the Democratic primary - which is essentially a race to the gutter in pandering to every fringe group in the city.

And as there is no real GOP presence in NYC, Bloomberg can do whatever he wants. And he self-finances so he doesn't answer to the national party or to corporate donors.

Not really sure they will take both houses or even one. The electorate seems to listen to whomever screams "BOO! The Terrorists are out to Getcha!!!".

Also, all those people you mentioned are hardly far Left Wing Radicals. There a lot more Moderate then GW Bush or the current slate of Republicans.

"And then they'll mess it al up by claiming a mandate and pushing an agenda nobody wants and didn't really vote for."
Huh? Didn't that happen in 2004 when GW won??

S.D.- get used to it. Once GW is gone, the dirty tricks the GOP has embraced for the past 6 years will go back to being verbotten, and their memories of the GOP's actions memories convienently erased.

joe should run under the Likud party banner...after all, that seems to be all he cares about..scumbag

and "baffling" - explain to me how Dean, Reid, Kerry and Pelosi are far left. And don't say "cuz O'Reilly says so"...they are each far more moderate and mainstream than the neocons and talking head apologists of faux news

Max, I don't know about that. I think one of the following will happen:
A. The Democrats win both the house and the Senate and the Republicans Filibuster as much as the Democrats ever did.

B. The Democrats win the House and the Republicans Filibuster as much as the Democrats ever did.

Either way, the Republicans blame anything bad on the Democrats.

S.D.,

One of my unspoken points was that W and the current GOP Congress have left a gaping hole in the middle the Democrats could have easily exploited in 2002, 2004, and this year. But however radical you think Bush is it isn't really relevent to how far left Dean, Pelosi, etc are. Maybe you don't see them as radical but most of the country does. How else can you explain Lieberman's double digit lead in Connecticut? Voters don't want Lamont or the GOP guy (whose name is completely escaping me - 'nuff said).

and Benny, nice try but I'm not a Republican and have the voter registration to prove it. I don't watch O'Reilly either. Pelosi and Dean are as far to the left as the neocons are to the right. You made an irrelevent and stupid comparison.

Yeah. It was stupid then and it will stupid when the Democrats do it.

And getting back to my first post, compare Pelosi and Dean (or Kerry and Gore) to Bill Clinton. If you don't see the difference then I can't help you any further. If the Democrats win this year it will be because the moderate GOP voters stay home, not because they approve of the Democratic candidates. Victory by default!!!

Either way, the Republicans blame anything bad on the Democrats.
and vice versa.

baffling:
ooooh, the left, they're so scary!

Given that Connecticut is a state with a great deal of independents, it only boosts Lieberman.

However, the big problem is that the two party system is the problem. Reforms must be enacted such as strong term limits, like 2 terms per level of government and then you have to go back to a real job. This would make things more in line with the rebellious colonists, I mean founding fathers' original intent.
