It's being reported that current Yankees hitting coach Don Mattingly will be taking the seat next to Joe Torre next season as his bench coach. Mattingly would be the team's 5th bench coach in five years and would replace Lee Mazzilli, who may or may not be offered a position with the team for 2007. Torre's contract with the team ends at the end of 2007 and it seems like parting ways after next season would be a mutual decision. If promoted to manager in 2008, perhaps Mattingly can finally lead the Yankees to a World Series title.
Newsday reports that the possible candidates to replace Mattingly as hitting coach include Kevin Long from Columbus, Tim Raines, Chili Davis and Chris Chambliss with Long as the favorite. If Mattingly does take over, players should know that they shouldn't mess with him. Gothamist is curious if the team's position on facial hair will change under Mattingly.

the manager doesn't decide grooming policy for the yankees. it's an organizational issue.
"If promoted to manager in 2008, perhaps Mattingly can finally lead the Yankees to a World Series."
You mean "ANOTHER" World Series, I guess you forgot Joe Torre took the Yanks to the World Series back in 2000 and 1999 and 1998.
Perhaps you mean back to a World Series title, as they were there in 2003 (but lost)
Lincoln, they mean MATTINGLY will LEAD the team to the World Series. He never LED the Yankees to the World Series as a player.
They're hitting failed in the post-season, so you promote the hitting coach? Huh?
Oh yeah.
I remember when the Yankees won the World Series, back in the 20th Century.
yeah, i meant a series title.
The team's facial hair policy is an edict of Herr Steinbrenner.
Timbnyc,
That's quite a sample size. Jason Giambi is quick to attribute much of his resurgent success to Mattingly. Unlike whizoldman Leo Mazzone (whose Braves pitching staff never really credited), all the Yankees hitters thought Mattingly was amazing. The reports that he was the first to the ballpark and last to leave and was always well prepared doesn't get you excited about the sort of manager he'll be?
