Pigeons Are Disturbing High Line Development

2006_10_highline2.JPG

High Line photos aren't exactly rare, but, since we happened to be on a nearby roof recently, we took a few.

It looks like we were onto something. According to Katie Lorah, media and project manager for Friends of the High Line, a new construction phase has begun. Deterring birds is one aspect of it: Pigeons are roosting in the beams, damaging concrete and steel and creating "unpleasant" conditions below. To read about the new phase, called "Site Preparation," check out this week's newsletter.

And the mess under the High Line is the footprint for Andre Balazs' new hotel, The Standard, which will jut through the elevated park.

For even more more photos, go to the Friends of the High Line gallery. And the FHL also has a mobile walking tour that you can take (PDF of map and instructions).

Kill all the pigeons!
If there was a rat problem, they wouldn't think twice about killing them all.

Oh and we should also kill anyone who feeds pigeons.

Such a tidy little town we shall have!

This thing is so fucking stupid. They should have just torn that liability down before the city starts getting lawsuits because of idiots falling down, getting a splinter or stubbing their toes.

Yeah we can't even keep idiots from posting nonsense comments to blogs.

(great pics, abcv, btw)

Pigeons can be controlled without harm to them or the environment. In addition, even if one were able to kill all current pigeons as some posters are suggesting, the area would still be attractive to new ones. (Nature hates a vaccuum). The key to a long-term solution is making the area undesirable. Otherwise you're just treating the symptoms.

Products like spikes needle strips, non-toxic Bird Proof anti-roost gel, bird netting, and more are popular and effective. They treat the problem at the source, permanently.

All those non-lethal suggestions don't work.

There is new technology under development for bird contraception. Already approved for use in resident Canada geese, pigeons are next on the list. Stay tuned. Erick

Poison the flying rats. It might not be illegal to feed pigeons but you can be fined by the Dept. of Health for it.
