Everyone has taxis on the mind! Mike at Google Map Mania let us know about this new Google Maps mash-up: The Taxi Fare Finder. We ran the imaginary taxi route of Mayor Bloomberg, going from City Hall to his East 79th Street townhouse and got a fare of just under $21 not including tip. The Fare Finder does have a disclaimer:
Please remember that this number is estimated--many factors, such as traffic and weather, will affect the actual fare. Tips are NOT included in the fare, and they are appreciated. This tool does NOT yet take tolls into account, which are your responsibility. Sorry, this site does not yet support fares outside of the five Boroughs and Newark Airport.Still, it's fun to see if rides are sort of near what you paid.
And we don't think yesterday's new fare hike for waiting time is incorporated, since Google Maps ain't judging traffic wait times.

Everything I've tried is a little low (~10%). But, its pretty damn close. It would be interesting if you could change the route, as the route it selected for the trip i tested was not the "best" way.
It's actually pretty accurate. Mine always came within a dollar.
One thing interesting I realized: we judge distance by subway stops.
The Lower East Side is almost the same distance and cab fare away from Williamsburg as it is to Hell's Kitchen. But Hell's Kitchen seems so much farther away in my mind because of the complex subway ride to get there.
some of the routs it comes up with are crazy: park slope to jfk by way of the bqe to the lie to the van wyck - thats nuts. its a muthafu*king cab drivers dream, a tour of all the low glory of pretty much all the highways of queens. insane
although doesn't bloomberg take the subway usually?
