Earlier this year, Kayson Pearson and Troy Hendrix tried to escape, stabbed a defense attorney, and attempted to take a court officer's gun while on trial for the rape and murder of Romona Moore. Even though they were found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of Moore a few months later, Pearson and Hendrix are standing trial for their attempted escape. Justice Albert Tomei (yes, uncle of Marisa) testified about the experience. When Pearson pulled out a Plexiglass shiv to stab his lawyer, Hendrix tried to jump across the table to get a court officer's gun. Tomei said, "There was a lot of screaming going on. There were jurors trapped and they were screaming and yelling," and that Hendrix "looked like Superman" while leaping towards the bench.
Tomei continued, "There was a lot of commotion. And while I was watching all this, I heard, 'Gun, gun, gun!' As soon as I heard that, I said, 'I'm outta here!'" He himself tried to jumped over the bench, but said, "I'm not very good at jumping. I missed the first time." Tomei was also a little embarrassed to admit he said, "Holy shit," during the chaos.
As you might imagine, this incident caused Tomei to call for a mistrial. And at the time, the mother of the victim who had been tortured and rape by Pearson and Hendrix for days before being killed and who had just testified before the would-be escape, yelled, "No! No! No! They're animals. They should have been killed! Why didn't the police shoot them?"

OK, what exactly is the defense strategy here? Can't be that the witnesses are unreliable, or that the wrong guys got fingered. What then? Stress made them do it?
Jmchez - very good question. I would absolutely not want to be either of these dudes' defense attorney. This poor woman's family. I'd want to kill them myself.

"If you live by the sword you will die by the sword." That includes people who demand the death of another person. Yes, their behavior is over the top. Yes they should be locked up for eternity. However, it is not for the "norm" to pass judgement in regards to another human being continuance of life and time of death. That is why we have judges and jurors. That is why we have prisons. Maybe some of the prisons should employ more psychiatrists and priests rather then guards. Maybe some of the cells should be painted pink or yellow and have padding in them. Maybe they shouldn't have weight rooms, televisions, and cigarettes available to them. Maybe they shouldn't have contact with other in-mates. There are many ways to deal with abusive, ugly, unlawful behavior.
