Although yeah, this thread did degenerate pretty quickly, for the record, my original post wasn't supposed to be "mucho macho posturing." I was trying to point out that a departmental explanation that a cop was jostled and his gun went off is not a legitimate excuse and that the responsibility lies with the cop who was handling his weapon unsafely.

There's plenty of instances where rookie nypd cops had "accidents". usually from showing off their guns or cleaning them. this was bad gun handling, period and nothing else. The gun does not go off by "bumping". Something was inside the trigger guard, most likely, his finger. that is all. best training facility my ass. and edEx is still a big baby.

You don't need to watch CNN to see that. If you've ever seen a Hercules or Nexus cop in this city you'd see their index finger is straight along the barrel. This is an isolated incident. It's not like we hear of this problem 38,000 times a day. The NYPD has one of the best training facilities in the world, you cannot possibly judge them by this one or even other incidents. It's on an individual basis, some cops are better than others just like some writers or designers are better than others. Just because one architect with a degree from RISD does a piss poor job on a building design does not mean RISD has a bad architecture program.

Exceedingly poor firearms training for the NYPD. One never puts finger on trigger until aiming at someone is willing to shoot at. That jostling excuse just means he was mishandling his weapon. A good contrast to examine is guns in movies vs. guns in the news. Watch any action movie and characters are constantly walking around with fingers crooked (that's KROOK-d and not crooke-ED) and within the trigger guard. Watch CNN or any coverage of Iraq or Afghanistan and you'll notice all soldiers keep their index fingers horizontal to the barrel of the gun and outside of the trigger guard until they're shooting.
