Map of the Day: OnNYTurf Subway Map Rebooted

2006_10_nyturf1.jpg

When OnNYTurf's server blew up a couple of weeks back, we were worried that our favorite subway maps mashup was lost forever. Luckily, they were able to recover everything-- and what's more, they've added a cool new feature to the map: station outlines! To find them, zoom in to the closest magnification, and you'll be able to see the entire outline of the station, complete with red bars noting the entrances and exits. This way, when you're going to a new stop, you'll know where to stand on the platform.

To complete this update, the guys at OnNYTurf had to photograph and vectorize the maps hanging in every station, and then cut the photographs into more than 50,000 tiles. That's a lot of work, but it seems to have paid off. Good work!

Where was this post a couple weeks back? If Gothamist was really "worried that [their] favorite subway maps mashup was lost forever" they would have pointed readers to onNYTurf's fundraising/rebuilding effort to help Will out when he needed it most.

This is very cool, but it looks like they only did it for Manhattan.
