Of all things you don't want to bring to your swearing-in-as- an-American-citizen ceremony is a gun. But that's exactly what security screeners found in the purse of a Korean woman who was on her way to a naturalization ceremony at U.S. District Court in Brooklyn. Mal Soon Jin, who has lived in America for 20 years and works at her family's Brooklyn fruit store, denied knowing how a five-shot Derringer got in her purse. The Sun says she suggested the unloaded gun was placed there by a screener handling her bag, but the Daily News reports the courthouse security statement says it was found "inside a zipped inner compartment of the handbag." Hmm! But really, would you bring a gun to the court where you're being sworn in? Especially after being in the country for 20 years?
Her relatives say she has no use for a gun and is scared of them. Jin was released on $100,00 bond. Jin's lawyer Peter Kirchheimer said there is no way Jin "knowingly" brought the gun to the court house and that when she's cleared, she will be naturalized.

The "COP" derringer, made in Torrance, CA, provided 4 shots of .357 Magnum, still in a package not much larger than a .25 ACP automatic, and significantly more compact than a similar revolver.

There has to be a rational explaination, as stupid as it may make her look. I don't think a middle aged korean woman who runs a fruit stand and has lived here for 20 years is looking to assassinate anyone with a freaking derringer and be dumb enough to get caught by an xray machine.
I bet it IS her gun, but she forgot to take it out of her bag. She's probably denying it because it's not licensed.
An unlicensed gun is illegal, period. Whether or not she forgot to take it out of her bag is not the point. She was packin' unlicensed heat. She is/was breaking the law and at this point, if the gun is illegal or not (aliens are not permitted to carry legal or illegal arms), she needs to suffer the consequences like any other naturalized citizen... It's part of being American.
Well the point I was making was that the gun most likely wasn't part of a nefarious plot to gun someone down.
In any case, as long as we're following the letter of the law, let's remind ourselves that she is priviledged - as a resident of the USA - to be assumed innocent until proven guilty.
