NYC's 300 Millionth American Baby Derby

2006_10_300mbaby.jpg

As the biggest city in the country, different New York City hospitals are claiming babies born in their respective maternity wards are the the 300 millionth American. The NY Post had a graphic of three babies - all coming in at 7:46AM yesterday. There's baby Emanuel Plata born in Elmhurst Hospital. Then there's baby Zoe Emile Hudson at New York Presbyterian Cornell. And teeny Joana Palaguachi, born in Flushing Hospital. Newsday also offers a fourth baby into the mix: Mystique Alyzha Agueda, born at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn. All hospitals are bragging, but Newsday found out some sobering news: Census Bureau spokesman Stephen Buckner says, "These are not actual counts, which makes it impossible to actually identify a 300 milllionth American." Well, all of these babies are number 300 million in our book.

The census factoid we like is how the estimate is derived. Bucker explained to Newsday that it take into account a new birth every 7 seconds, one death every 13 seconds, and net international migration every 31 seconds - a "new American every 11 seconds."

Already, the population clock says we're at U.S. 300,007,789 - and counting. And NPR had the 200 millionth American on yesterday during an interesting segment about the 300 millionth American yesterday.

Who cares, these babies will wound up on welfare on in jail when they are adults anyway. This is as pointless as new year's baby.

Can I ask?
Will the news media ever again give us facts about important events in the world or will we have to settle for spin-worthy advertisements from now on...

I mean, C'mon!
Like this entire story wasn't completely fabricated as fodder for conservatives' assault on immigration policy...

Dude, go find your car. These kids can't be out of the womb for 24 hours before encountering prejudice? Now that has got to be some type of record.

"Dude," your third-grade grammar skills suggest that you really aren't very bright.

People who refer to themselves as "Nazis" are generally not very bright.

Miquel, what the hell are you talking about? "Like this entire story wasn't completely fabricated as fodder for conservatives' assault on immigration policy..." Yup, a story about the population of America is totally fabricated. You've finally uncovered the biggest goal of the Bush administration...lie about the population of America. Thanks jackass.

Chris,
Everyone knows that there are real news stories (ie: about Iraq, Environment, Crime, etc) that are typically based in fact and on events that actually happened and/or are happening.

Then there are stories that are created by the mainstream media to serve as fact (when in reality are fictional or distorted statistics) for basing talking points on sensationalist braodcasts such as O'Reilly. Otherwise CNN and FOX News would not have been as succesful in recent years.

I cannot prove that Rupert Murdock pays heftily for this service. Nor can I prove that the Republican Party or PACs that stand to gain from this pay Murdock to exert his influence.

"Well, all of these babies are number 300 million in our book."

In my book, as well. I don't particularly care about any of them more than I do about my missing sock from the wash this weekend, or the 301st million baby. These babies are indeed creepy. I'd be more interested in the affairs of N. Korea though. Or the Mets on the verge of being ousted before they make the WS.

Dave H. they will not have such luxury as to be free from prejudice, ever. Humans are a hateful bunch.

PS- You don't see how an inflated statistic on population could provide groups such as the Minutemen more ammunition for their cause. I always look at who stands to gain in any situation.

Stats are always suspect, numbers always fudged...especialy with a task as large as counting all the people in the US.

You would've thought that someone in charge would be able to sort out fact from fiction...before Enron, anyway.

I'm sorry you have not an independent bone in your body, blind sheep.

Kwanito,
I wasn't denying prejudice, just attempting to identify it in an apparently futile attempt to shame its practitioners. There's a difference between acknowledgement and acceptance.

I feel so sorry for people with horrible first names like "Mystique." I can't imagine trying to be taken seriously with that name.

"I'm sorry you have not an independent bone in your body, blind sheep."

not bad. we also would have accepted "your partisan blindness makes your bleating unacceptable, conservative livestock."

Don't worry..these babies won't interfere with your NY living situation..

neither you, I, or that baby will be able to afford living in the city anyway..so no worry there..
