Bad Behavior on Campus

One Koran in the toilet is bad. A second Koran in the toilet, you got problems. Or a rash of copy cats Koran dunkings. At Pace University's downtown location, a Koran was found in a toilet at the library's bathrooom - the second Koran-in-the-toilet incident in recent weeks and the fourth hate incident spanning the NYC and Westchester campuses. Pace is investigating the incident, but the Council on American-Islamic Relations' NY chapter issued a statement saying, "We once again call on Pace University to take concrete measures to help educate the student population about Islamophobic bigotry and its negative impact on ordinary Muslims and on American society."

Other campus news:
- The ACLU was up at Columbia last night to discuss free speech. If you have access to Times Select, you can read Stanley Fish's blog entry about the Minutemen-student clash; he suggests the whole thing was not meant to be academic but theatrical, and therefore, "In the context of what is essentially a piece of entertainment, Columbia, or any other university, does not have the responsibility to protect free speech or encourage democratic debate or stand up for academic freedom."

- The Washington Square News has the first part of a series about fake IDs, the students who make them and use them, why bars don't check them that carefully, and more. A sophomore wrote on a survey, "I feel somewhat socially impaired by not having a fake [ID]."

Is it racism when one Muslim hates another Muslim a la Shiite vs. Sunni?

If someone has to answer that for you then you don't need an answer, you need an education. Better yet crawl back into your mother's womb and start over. When you come out the next time pay attention. Maybe the apostrophes are making you dizzy with dumbness. Lay off the apstrophes and pay attention.

Please continue to twist my words...it quite amuses me. My original comment was that there are a lot of racist posts here and that the actions at Pace are racist. Pehaps you'de be more comfortable with 'anti-Mulsim sentiments' or more unconfortable with "christian crusade'... the real term would be bias. The point is, that on a college campus where race is a super-charged issue, attacking a religion that is represented MAINLY by people of color is a racist action.

    "Muslims aren't all "brown.""

I never said that whatsoever...I get around and have friends from all age/race/religon/ class/sexual orientation/ cultures/political affiliations...I know that each person is an individual and should be taken as they wish to be represented...do you?

What I'd like to convey is that rather than breaking biased actions into little sub-actions so that different race/religion/sexual orientations fight over whose is more tragic, lump them together so that people who are victim of biased crimes can come together and address this issue. Because it's more or less the same racisit idiots who are the perpetrators...

    douche.

The students who stormed the stage at the Minutemen event should all be suspended immediately. If you want to protest an event do so by celebrating your own right to free speech outside the event. Don't trash someone else's freedom of speech and pretend to have the moral high ground. What a bunch of disgusting anti-liberals those students are.

    You get the difference?

As to the towel-head comment, most men you see wearing turbans in this city are Sikhs, not Muslims. They are Indian, not Middle Eastern. Put a little research into your hatred, people.

  • Apostrophe Police

Its only has an apostrophe if it's a contraction of "it is"

When its meaning is "belonging to it", its spelling is simply: its.

Face this Miquel: your (sic) a sheltered, provincial, reactionary moron railing against the very stereotypes you are propogating.

Muslims aren't all "brown." News flash: the largest Muslim population in the world belongs to an Asian country. All Christians aren't white either. And there are (gasp) even a few black Jews skulking around the city.

    And yes, I misspelled 'labels.'

Point being, I honestly don't equate Islam with Middle Eastern. Nor should you. I have a problem with Islam that I don't have with people who are Middle Eastern. I think that's true of many Americans, whether they realize this or not.

  • not offended

Jeebus: You are funny. That smell sounds funky, stanky, and offensive, like you said. And worse, you couldn't get a flush.

so, "Nigger" isn't as offensive as it was in the years before the 70's. Many black people I have related to are not moved by the word. However, everyone is not in the same place socially. So what offends some may not offend others. The 'N' word is a other curse word. People who use them to describe another human being are mentally stunted. It is ugly language. Like: cunt, twat, bitch, whore, fuckin A' hole, prick, dick, ...ect. etal.

while it's true that Indonesia is the most populous muslim nation, I doubt many americans even know where it is.

It's easier to pick on the "towelheads" and mohamed akbar or arafat. Arafat being the main evil dude.

  • Spike

Miquel: I do agree that anti-Muslim sentiment in the USA is often directed at those of Middle Eastern descent, regardless of their actual faith. It's worth noting, however (not necessarily to you, but to the readership at large), that the most populous Muslim nation is Indonesia--definitely not ethnically Middle Eastern of any stripe.

    Peace out,

    Spike

You should be in class with them. Perhaps then you'll learn what the word "racist" means and why it doesn't apply to religion.

NO anon. ny. m. ass: Try to think with a bit more depth. You should be in class. If YOU understood the motivation for throwing a Koran in the toilet, you would know that the person was motivated by the person's race as well as the religion. The Koran represents the person just at the turban represents the person. That is why some ignorant Americans refer to people with turbans on as "rag heads."

Most media speaks negatively of the Koran in relationship to middle easterners or Farakan/american. So the Koran in the toilet is symbolic and meant to offend a race of people and the religious group of people. Therefore, the connection is racist.

I am certain they were not targeting the education system because it was book.

Live in the real world, bud...

where the majority of Muslims living in the US are persons of color...live in this country where the divide is between white people and all people of color...and don't live in a vaccuum where you can pretend that this has nothing to do with a group of Middle Eastern, Muslim, terrorists blowing up the WTC.

In the United States today, anti-Muslim sentiments are as much about race and geography as they are about religion. Context...

    Face it, your a douche.

Have you see the students at Pace? Think muscle shirts and shares by the jersey shore people.

so, it's not surprising this happened at Pace."

This kind of thing happens at lots of schools, regardless of prestige or politics. When I was at a Seven-Sisters-school-that-shall-remain-unnamed, there were at least four or five hate incidents during my four years there. You're kidding yourself if you think this is confined to less-prestigious institutions (whatever the hell that means).

  • When they decide that anything they don't agree with is not "speech" than yes, I would call them fascists.

So by their logic, theater is not speech? Can Bush and Cheney shut down the next Tim Robbins play at the Public?

WTF are you talking about? Read the goddamn article, you dimwit. The ACLU hosted a forum about the response to the Minutemen protest. In other words, if you read closely enough, you'll see that the ACLU defended the Minutemen. I'm sorry your knee-jerk reaction is so strong. Plus, this is about the Columbia ACLU and not anything official such as the NY-CLU.

To wit: what race is a Muslim?

  • Jeebus

"Think muscle shirts and shares by the jersey shore people."

LoL right. But we do have lots of ditzy female students; I won’t lie to you there.

We keep receiving emails from the president each time this shit occurs. Any idiot who wants to cause trouble who themselves may not necessarily be racist can pull a prank like this just to cause a ruckus. All the press this has been receiving though can be counterproductive as this is exactly what the perpetrators want.

In actuality, this type of thing can be routine on many college campuses. (shocking!)

A couple months ago I walked inside a bathroom stall in the New York Pace campus and discovered the word ‘Nigger’ scrolled upon the stall door in big black letters by permanent marker. I was somewhat offended, but a few moments later I was even more offended by the foul smell coming from the 2nd stall to my right. I asked for a courtesy flush and was flatly refused! I was quite upset and shaken as it was quite a nasty smell.

…oh and the racist writing on the door was bad too

  • hit the nail on the head
