Mets' Outburst Helps Them Avoid Precipice

Given the pitching matchup entering Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, Sunday's high-scoring affair should come as no surprise. With a slugfest win over the Cardinals, the Mets tied the series at two games apiece before Monday's Game 5. They can thank Carlos Delgado, who hit a three-run homer in the fifth to snap a 2-2 tie before adding two-run double during a six-run sixth inning.

The Mets' patience helped wear out Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes, who was fortunate to allow only two runs over his four innings. Mets starter Oliver Perez didn't do much better, but he had the good fortune of having Delgado on his team. Strange to think the Mets would be relying on a pitcher added as a throw-in to a deadline deal for Roberto Hernandez, a replacement for Duaner Sanchez, the reliever lost to a separated shoulder in a car accident.

As it turned out, Perez relied on the Mets' bats, not the other way around. Calros Beltran hit two solo shots and David Wright's first hit of the series was also a solo homer. They'll hope to carry the power over to Game 5, when Tom Glavine and Jeff Weaver will face off on three days' rest. There's no predicting who will be affected more by the change in routine, but since Glavine's the better pitcher, that game, and the series, could end up slanting the Mets' way.

Oliver Perez didn't do well? He lasted more innings than Trachsel, giving up only one run in the time it took him to give up 5. Sure, it wasn't the game an El Duque or a Pedro would have deliveried if they were healthy, but Perez needed to step up and I think he did a good job of it. If it was Shea, the audience would have stood when he walked off the field in the 5th.

the mets wouldn't have had a chance to win if their pitching stunk as bad as the cards did last night.

mets in six.

Who's the chick in the catcher's mask?

Perez was alright. He shouldn't have been relying SO much on his fastball in the 5th and 6th, since the slow stuff he had on point was hurting the Cards more. Each HR in the 5th and 6th were fastballs in the end.

"Who's the chick in the catcher's mask?"

Hahaha!! I noticed that too. He has some very long eyelashes.

You gotta believe! Mets in 6, no doubt :)

Perez also had NO WALKS!

the usual pro-yankees, grudging-there's-another-team-in-the-post-season coverage we have come to LOVE gothamist for.

at least it's not tien.

Not for nuthin' but Tien is one of the bigger Yankee haters around. It's a testament to his endless charm and Yankee fans boundless capacity for forgiveness that we can still be friendly with him.

And not for nothing, but five runs over five and 2/3 isn't really anything to write home about. Not as bad as Perez has been, granted, but it was a battle of bats and bullpens, which is the Mets turf. You'll always look good giving up five when the other team gives up twelve.
