What are the Odds?

2006_10_brick.jpgA Philadelphia woman on a business trip was hit by a piece of falling brick right as she stepped out of a cab. The Post reports that even though there was scaffolding outside of 500 Fifth Avenue, somehow a 3-by-1 inch shard of brick fell and hit 42 year old Myrna Villaneuva above the eye. Summons were issued by both the Buildings Department and police for failing to protect the public. We imagine Villaneuva, who needed a few stitches, will be weighing in with a suit of her own.

  • "If the odds are "quite good," how do I get in on the action? I could use a six-figure settlement."

Unless you also see benefit in spending the rest of your life with an IQ of 67, you're probably better off avoiding head injuries caused by falling masonry.

    Mark Lee,

If the odds are "quite good," how do I get in on the action? I could use a six-figure settlement. Maybe I should walk around some more. Strange that stories about people getting hit by debris don't fill the newspapers if the odds are that good.

"One day, while walking on St. Mark's Place b/t 2nd and 3rd ave's, I saw a malt liquor bottle smash into pieces on the sidewalk...literally one foot away from a man pushing his baby in a stroller. A gust of wind must have propelled it from a window sill."

Mark Lee, you're very charitable. My presumption would have been that somebody tossed it out the window.

What are the odds? Quite good, I would say, given the density of people, buildings, and debris in this city. One day, while walking on St. Mark's Place b/t 2nd and 3rd ave's, I saw a malt liquor bottle smash into pieces on the sidewalk...literally one foot away from a man pushing his baby in a stroller. A gust of wind must have propelled it from a window sill. One split second and that baby would have taken quite a glass shard shower.

Yea, what are the odds. She should go out and buy a Lotto ticket, but my guess is she's already hit the jackpot when she starts to sue the building owner, the renovation company doing work on the building, and the city. I say she gets $5 mil easy.
