Brooklynites are Such Prudes!

Last week Brooklyn Papers ran a story about celebrities buying houses in Brooklyn. One of those celebrities was Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is rumored to have purchased a brownstone on Sterling Place, off 5th Avenue. With star-sightings in Park Slope going for a dime-a-dozen, the story wasn't exactly big news-- except that they illustrated it with a picture of Gullenhaal buck naked on some kind of bear-skin futon. Then all hell broke loose-- and dozens of complaint letters poured in:

I’m actually a left-wing person. I’m not upset with puerile things in general, but I find the photo really distasteful and unwelcoming. Part of the appeal of living in Park Slope is part of the snooping of neighbors, I agree, but not that kind of exploitation of our neighbors. I actually think you owe her an apology, and you owe all of us an apology. I feel very strongly on that.

I was puzzled by your choice of photo. Running a nearly nude photo of the actress on your front page is hardly a neighborly welcome. Did you just Google around for the most inappropriate free-of-charge photo you could find? Not nice!

I bet Maggie Gyllenhaal felt really good about moving here when she spotted your cover while pushing her newborn in a stroller along Seventh Avenue. Anything to sell free papers, right?

Today, Brooklyn Papers apologized for running the image: "Our front-page photo last week of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal represented a lapse of discretion for which we apologize. Given the nature of the photo, its placement on Page One was inappropriate and not in line with our standards." Jeez, Louise! Doesn't anyone have a sense of humor anymore?

part of the fun is snooping on neighbors?

wtf?

"...sell free papers..."

???

That's how celebrities want to be portrayed.

And of course Dobkin with another naked lady, perpetuating the issue.

they should run another story with the same picture without the rug.

The "sense of humor" line would make sense if they ran the pic because it was intended to be funny in some way. In reality, it was intended as a cheap attention-grab. It was in poor taste - almost as poor as trying to stick up for the paper and its lame marketing tactics.

Screw the picture, totally fine with that. But the fur?! At least it could have been a dead beaver.

I'm with Tien, get rid of the fur for two reasons. A different article, for sure.

That was one of the dumbest things I have ever written on the Internet. Wow.

Alright, hold the F on. This from the city who went nuclear when some woman in a Toys R Us was asked not to nurse in the middle of a store?

WTF is with the double standard folks? Either you like the boobies or you don't like the boobies. Hell, Maggie's aren't even showing!

And for the record, that picture rocks.

And I third the motion for getting rid of any covering altogether.

(wipes drool away and goes back to work)

Park Slope has like 5 "celebrities" and all of a sudden they are dime a dozen? Well, I guess that's true for this ilk.

I think the "celebrities" are moving to Brooklyn to avoid this kind of thing, and I don't blame them. If this keeps up, they might as well return to L.A. and take the borough's incipient film industry with them.

Maggie had that picture taken! Sheesh! It's not like they mocked up a PhotoShop job or used a scene from a movie where she was a character. She posed with her beaver covered in beaver. Big deal.

I totally unloaded all over my Brooklyn Paper last Sunday.

Any guy who disagrees with the choice of photo has teh ghey. Not that there's anything wrong with that - just saying.

people in brooklyn dont have a sense of humor anymore.. isn't that obvious?

i would have thought all the carpet munchers in park slope would love maggie's beaver

Gersh Kuntzman, the editor of the Brooklyn Papers and a former Post columnist, has taken that Brooklyn paper into new heights of provocation. He's clearly as funny and witty as anyone, but the establishment Brooklyn mentaility does not seem to be able to take the old Post like sex-on-the-front page thing well.

the photo is a still from The Secretary. Not a recent movie. While certainly Maggie is an attractive woman, is it Brooklyn Paper's policy to publish compromising photos on the front page of anyone who moves into the Borough? running the photo was tasteless and a naked ploy to attract attentiong. stupid pun intended.

it really was uncalled for. any photo could have illustrated the article about Gyllenhall moving to Brooklyn. this sensational one was uncalled for. Now if Maggie moved in and suddenly ran down the street naked, that would be a story. but her half naked film still is not news.

Actually, robin.g, that picture is a still from Secretary. I think it was only flashed on the screen for a second during a montage. That's what I find a little offensive - it's not like she poses like this all the time, you have to dig to get this photo (or have internet horndogs dig for you).

"running the photo was tasteless and a naked ploy to attract attentiong. "

and hey, it worked!

So let me get this straight: Jen Connelly and Mags Gylenhaal are now currently my neighbors? I'm the luckiest bastard to ever have moved out of Manhattan. The F train smells sweeter every day.

i think they should have an article about jennifer connolly and use the naked-from-the-waist-down shot from requiem for a dream.

Ever see this chick in person? Not at all boner inducing. Plain Jane all the way. Who cares about this dumb story? Gothamist equals lame transplant fanboys and girls.

Anyone who wears fur might as well tattoo "I'm a murdering psychopath" on their forehead!
