Mexicana Mama on Hudson is by far the best mexican food I've had in the city besides the red hook vendors.

Clarence,

Check out La Palapa, on W4 and Sixth. It is by far the best Mexican Food around. While I miss tex-mex it is true mexican and the best I have ever had in NYC

Just grabbed the chipotle pork taco platter from Calexico. $8. As a recent transplant from SF (insert requisite I'm-ruining-your-city comment here), I've been craving decent Mexican -- like 28 Days Later fiending. I've managed to avoid succumbing to atrocities like Harry's Burritos. But damn, Calexico is pretty good. Spring the extra $2 for the platter and get some solid black beans and yellow rice with salsa. They grill their tortillas, and don't use those crap steam trays. Excellent shredded cabbage, Mexican cream, guac and spicy chipotle sauce.

Also, I'd avoid comparing pork dishes like al pastor or carnitas (Calexico's chipotle pork is shredded like carnitas, but not fried, and has an al pastor-like taste) to North Carolina BBQ. Two completely different cuisines. Just doesn't translate.

no love for the vendors at the red hook ball fields? maybe contestants have to be daily fixtures, not weekend ones.
