-- Late breaking news: Rudy Fleming was convicted of murder in the Nicole DuFresne case-- we'll followup tomorrow.
-- If you don't work in the financial service industry, you may have missed out on the Aleksey Vayner meme, in which a kid at Yale sent a hilariously insane application video for a job at an i-bank. All hell broke lose shortly after the video was leaked to the internet. This short video, set to that song from the Karate Kid, provides a good summary.
-- You think you're a big Mets fan? Guess again.
-- Live-blogging a transportation conference at Columbia: "I dream of Manhattan making a Broadway closure for pedestrians permanent... I dream of this for Broadway for a few hours on Sundays."
-- Kottke is looking for good Italian take out... in Little Italy.
-- From the SVU blooper reel: A Queens man is suing the NYPD for $14m, for busting him for allegedly soliciting a prostitute-- while his pregnant wife was in the car!
-- If the Southbridge Towers tenants vote to leave the Mitchell-Lama program, some of the apartments could sell for more than $1m-- many of the apartments have views of the Brooklyn Bridge.
-- Speaking of bridges, the entire lower deck of the Manhattan Bridge is going to be closed for a year. That's not going to be good for traffic on Flatbush Avenue or Canal Street.
Publisher's Note: Today, Idolator accused Jen Carlson, our music editor, of a conflict-of-interest: using Gothamist to unfairly promote bands she represents at the expense of other bands. She's taken the time to respond to their accusations at Daily Refill, her personal blog. Gothamist has a very clear conflict of interest policy-- and full confidence in Jen Carlson and her sense of professionalism.

If Gothamist wants to be taken seriously as a journalistic enterprise, they should start acting like one.
How the hell can a black man go to jail for killing a white woman? oh yeah. he's not OJ.
$14 mil seems like a lot. one thing for sure is that the Queens guy has taught all us non-black men a lesson: be glad you're not black anytime you interact with someone that's not black. sheesh.
Cops don't care how much these lawsuits cost the city and it's taxpayers. It trickles down from the Top.
you kinda have to love gawker for pulling a Dobkin and finding the most unflattering picture of the person they're bashing.

kudos, gawker.
No, Gothamist, it's fucked up. The real media attempts to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest. Jack Shafer is not coding Windows, but when he wrote about Microsoft (or now Washington Post) on Slate, he made damn sure to be explicit about the fact that they sign his checks, and his stuff is critical.
Gothamist music coverage is almost always fawning, and lo and behold it's written by an A&R person (who has no interest in letting anyone else write for ths site, I might add.) There are plenty of people in NYC that don't have a conflict of interest who are qualified to write about NYC music. Regardless of the specifics of the bands she manages, you don't have someone working in an industry attempt to objectively cover it.
You decide, Gothamist. Is Armstrong Williams going to keep covering music for you, and are you comfortable with the public knowing her relationship to the business, or is it time to find someone who's not going to be Moveabling their own Hype?
Sorry Jake, I love Gothamist, but I have to disagree...for a music writer to hype her 'own' bands (by "own" I mean the ones that are associated with her own "Management company"). It IS a conflict of interest. If Christgau had pulled something like this with the Voice 20 years ago (and had his own management company and then wrote about those bands in the Voice) the Voice would have had a MAJOR problem with it. i tried to comment on the idolator page but im not registered and didnt want to end up on any mailing list. but heres what i wanted to say, so why not say it here:
i have to disagree. i think she is very upfront about representing those bands. i also think she doesn't possess as much influence as you paint her out to have. she's not the mastermind behind the new york music scene. she's good at what she does though, and she deserves credit.
i dont even think gothamist is particularly well written most of the time (no offense) but i do think jen strikes me as someone genuine and ethical, and i never sensed anything otherwise from her posts on gothamist or daily refill.
also, the first comment on this page is disgusting. keep in mind, i don't know her or even really care that much, except that reading about this struck me as absurd and... i know you're trying to be controversial but you're really grasping here. it should be embarrassing. there's a weird level of anger here that makes me confused, too.
This city really needs to work on it's affordable housing laws. The Times explained how developers get credits for building affordable units in the outer boroughs and use them to build luxury units in Manhattan - with a tax abatement. What a waste of tax resources. And it totally ignores the middle class. For being surrounded by Democrats this city is a joke at protecting the middle class.
promoting bands, and writing about said bands on a 3rd party site (gothamist) is an obvious conflict of interest. its improbable to write anything subjective about people someone has chosen (or been paid) to promote.
i need photo, video fuuny send for email
That video is the best thing I've seen in years. I've never seen a more qualified candidate for a position in IB. It takes serious mental health problems to even create something like that, let alone to send it in as part of an application--here's to Yale!
Does anybody ever read those music reviews anyway? seriously, anyone?
Watching blogs 'battle' eachother over journalistic integrity like this is just pathetic. Wow, some 'cause.'
Also, how can Idolator have integrity if they censor their commenters? Isn't interaction with readers a mainstay of the blog world?
How can so many supposedly "smart" people not see that the entire Aleksey Veyner (spelling?) thing is a hoax?
If he's guilty of anything, its ripping off Sascha Baron-Cohen (again, spelling?), who himself probably ripped off yet another predecessor.
unethical behavior or not, conflict of interest or not, who the hell cares? it's just not worth getting your panties in a bunch. and this our-blog-is-holier-than-yours crap is just hogwash. everyone is in bed with everyone else in the media, so take it all with a grain of salt. please, people, start caring about something more important to the world.
conflict of interest.
" Gothamist has a very clear conflict of interest policy-- and full confidence in Jen Carlson and her sense of professionalism."
I give Jen a week tops before she "gracefully steps down" after Gothamist had hoped this FLAGRANT conflict of interest would escape notice. That's how "clear" that policy is, apparently, when you boil it down - "don't get caught."
Even jen c has to admit that amount of times the names takka takka, slowlands, and bravo silvia have been mentioned on this site is way disproportionate to their actual popularity within the new york scene.
this has been going on for quite some time now, and i'm suprised that only now is someone calling her out on it.
ahem. nick, your friendly neighborhood commenter here, has mentioned it several times in the past.
even though i really like slowlands.
maybe if Gawker wrote a piece about the lack of copyediting on Gothamist they might do something about it. Or just not really address the issue at hand while misspelling shit.
i stopped reading gothamist music recommendations when jen took over. she's not that talented, obviously doesn't understand a conflict of interest when it's clear as can be, and has made what was once a great resource, blow.
