Tension Over North Korean Nuclear Tests

Yesterday, the countries on the United Nations Security Council had an emegency meeting after North Korea announced it had tested a nuclear device. The U.S. proposed cargo inspections and limited sanctions to North Korea (including luxury items - and Kim Jong Il loves his Henessy), as well as banning any military trade. The North Korea nuclear tests now bring up some new questions about how the administration handled the situation, making international policy even more of an election day issue. And the city's Korean-Americans tell the Daily News they are upset with the blasts and worry about relatives in South Korea, but hope that there is a peaceful resolution.

The Daily News and NY Times both have 101's about the blasts; the Times also has reaction from China, Japan and South Korea, where porestesters had a rally (photo below). The Post has taken to calling him "Kooky Kim" as it describes his personal life (possibly 13 illegitimate children!) while the Daily News says Kim is not a kook but a "solid political machine." The NY Times' editorial says that limited sanctions aren't enough to stop North Korea - there needs to be a a ban on all trade, and China needs confront North Korea.

And outgoing UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's statement said, "It aggravates regional tensions in and around the Korean peninsula, and jeopardizes security both in the region and beyond.... The Secretary-General views this test as yet another reason for the international community to renew its collective effort to bring the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty into force and to make progress towards multilateral nuclear disarmament." Annan's replacement was officially nominated yesterday - South Korean Ban Ki Moon, who said, "This should be a moment of joy. But instead, I stand here with a very heavy heart. Despite the concerted warning from the international community, North Korea has gone ahead with a nuclear test."

Hey Jen, not to be an ass or anything but since when North Koreans make nuclear tests in South Korea ;). Maybe it's just me but first time I read this sentence I felt shocked, then I thought really hard about my geographical knowledge and then I read more closely with a different punctuation...it really can make a difference can't it. Anyway just saying ...and yeah UN aint gonna do much, unfortunately they are too much of a puppet.

I for one am glad that the Bush Administration's policy of calling the North Koreans "evil" in speeches but ignoring them in every other context really paid off. It just emphasizes the fact that all Bush really cares about is oil and fat contracts for his friend's companies to rebuild countries after he invades.

I swear, I thought the Middle Image was Kim Jong Il as Big Bird!

Bet we get interesting protest photo's by the UN this week.

Whenever I see a picture of Kim Jong Il all I can think of is Team America, World Police

Kim Jong Il: Hans, Hans, Hans! We've been frew this a dozen times. I don't-have-any-weapons-a-mass-destwuction, 'kay Hans?

Ahem. But seriously, North Korea having a nuclear device is actually not funny.

Yeah, it's all Bush's fault. And they say Bush oversimplifies things!

Damn it, S.D. beat me to it. Big Bird! I am concerned about the North Koreans' primitive mobile launcher: have you seen the TaepoDong on Snuffaluffagus?

Wait, I thought Genius Jimmy Carter and the Clinton posse fixed all this back in in the '90s, why the good folks even gave him a Nobel Peace Price for his outstanding work in 2002. What happened?

If Israel can have nukes, so can the Democratic Peoples Republic of North Korea.
If Pakistan can have nukes, so can NK.
Levels out the playing field.
Anyone who loves fine food and porn can't be all bad.
ROK on! oops wrong korea.

well, if that cut-and-run republican Eisenhower hadn't pulled out in 1953 this wouldn't be a problem today...

You can rightly or wrongly place blame on any number of people or contingencies in the past all you want, but please explain how that deals with the real problem of today?

So so you are saying that Bush shouldn't be held responsible because he did nothing more or less than previous presidents? The fact is that he told the American people in his state of the union address that he would stop NK from getting nukes, and that they were part of the "axis of evil". After that however, he just ignored the situation and invaded Iraq. The other fact is that this happened on HIS watch, not Clinton's, not anyone elses, there has to be some accountability. You can't just point to someone else whenever Bush is accused of fucking up. It may be partly related to events in other administrations, but the fact is, HE did nothing to correct THEIR failings. He is the president, the ultimate success or failure is his.

How about we all agree it's Kim Jong Il's fault? Clinton tried the carrot in bilateral negotiations: food aid and assistance in building 'peaceful' nuclear reactors. Kim ignored his side of the deal and continued to work towards building a bomb. Bush tried the stick in multilateral negotiations: he called Kim on his violation of the previous agreement, and cracked down on his widespread counterfeiting of USD.

Neither strategy worked. 'Regime change' was never an option because with nukes or without, Kim could level Seoul in any kind of conflict. Maybe China could have done something, but I think the US exhausted its options over the last two presidencies. I think we all have to recognise that Kim is an extortionist, and any compromise that did not involve the paying of regular tribute to his regime were bound to fail.

So how long before we go to war with North Korea and invade their country looking for WMD?

It's mad funny how Bush is like "SADDAM and Iraq have weapons of mass destruction and we must go in to stop them" while Saddam and Iraq are profusely denying they have any weapons at all. Meanwhile, N Korea is openly touting having Nuclear capabilities and Kim Jong IL is taunting the US with his flyover Japan testing's and buzzing and the US is fucking ignoring him. It's like they are waving a huge Nuclear weapon at the US and Bush does nothing. WhY? because all N korea has is poor starving people and a militia. They are barren with no oil. BUsh is so goddamn transparent.

Yeah, Kim Jong Il is waving his nuclear cock and slapping it in Bush's face and Bush can only hand out statement's like "N korea is bad, we will pursue this" what the fuck? how about some action?

Brooklynite; Heh!
;)

How'd Jimmy Carter get in the Mix? Are people still trying to "Censure" him?? Nuts.

This is entirely Kim Jong Il doing. While I think GW "Trust Me!!" Bush has just ignored NK, with little attention to NK after declaring it part of the "Axis Of Evil", it was just a matter of time before Kim Jong Il pushed the button.

Assuming it was even a nuke. From what I've read You could get the similar Seismic reading via conventional explosives. In fact, I saw a Discovery Channel show last year that pointed out that Strip mining needs to inform the US in advance so that the US could inform Russia.

Why don't we just ignore North Korea lock, stock, and barrel?

Look, they have nukes. What's the better course of action: rile a hornet's nest or let the hornets go about their business? I'm honestly not losing much sleep over this - I realize that I'm in the overwhelming minority but I'm not sure why that is.

At least North Korea doesn't have a nuclear border enemy with reciprocal express hatred. Meaning: I'm far more concerned with Pakistan and India being nuclear given the history there.

North Korea flaunts their 'nukular' weapons and Bush does NOTHING, even pretends nothing's going on. Yet he jumped all over Saddam for FAR less. Why?. Because Iraq had oil plus a push-over army while North Korea has no oil and they already kicked our ass back in the '50's.

Maybe we should invade Costa Rica just in case.

#13 "So how long before we go to war with North Korea and invade their country looking for WMD?"

I was thinking the same thing.

Kim Jong Il is like that kid in the classroom "me me ooooo me me look I have nukes..over here!" and nobody seems to notice..what is wrong with this picture.
