Columbia-Minutemen Clash Kicker Spotted

2006_10_kicker.jpgThe Columbia Spectator reports that a person is clearly seen kicking a protester from last week's chaotic Minutemen even at Columbia. Video shown on Univision - and later posted on YouTube - shows a Minuteman supporter wearing a dark baseball cap kicking a protester, who was bleeding. And the Spectator points out that he looks a lot like the man seen in this Village Voice picture from a Minutemen protest in the city in June. The various videos from the events are like Columbia's version of the Zapruder film - students and officials seem to be going through them with a fine tooth comb to understand what happened and who's to blame. For instance, from the Spectator:

An unidentified young man is seen violently tearing down a white banner held by several students. While it had been speculated that this was Chris Kulawik, CC '08, president of the College Republicans and a Spectator columnist, this individual is shown dressed in a black shirt and pants, not the suit jacket and maroon shirt Kulawik was wearing.
In other news, Columbia students are receiving hate mail and death threats, given the extreme media focus on the event. And the university's student body passed a free speech resolution ("the Student Body of Columbia University has a right to invite speakers with varied points of view to campus, and it is unacceptable within our community, to take away someone else's right to express their opinions and viewpoints."), as questions about the level of security and motives of chosing certain speakers remained.

that's what happens when you rush the stage ... you get tuned-up. The free speech party ends when you forcefully interrupt a speech. Too bad if you disagree ... f'ing lefty hypocrites.

hr -
well done on proving that you can read! how about comprehension now? lets give it a try

the speech was broken up do the violence, not sign holding protesters. the minutemen killed their own lecture since they started the punching and kicking

now be careful, i think you are going to hurt yourself writing a response...jsut step away from the computer meat head.

user-pic

Yeah Hr, "Free Speech" Obviously included death threats, Right?

Why don't you exercise your "Free Speech" by screaming Fire in a Movie Theater?

f'ing lefty hypocrites?
Oh, Please.

user-pic

jason- spend less time protesting and more time learning how to read and write "meat head"....=
"the speech was broken up do the violence"

Hr never has any great comeback.
All the same one liners over and over again.

hr even has a girlie man defending him here, I see.

What are you guys gonna do? kick me in the head?
yeah, I'd thought so,
Like I said, watch the blond dark shirt guy.
bucha puzzies.

user-pic

Actually, In My Case, I ocassionaly Agree with Hr, just not this time.

IMO, as I've mentioned before, Storming the Stage was a mistake.

I hate racist fucks like HR.

the sad truth is that conservatives spread hate and anger wherever they go (if they aren't too busy being pedophiles, that is).

That wasn't "storming" the stage. They just jumped up on stage to unfurl a banner.
You want real "Bum rush" type "storming" the stage?
You ever been to a Budwieser Superfest at MSG?
Even been to an oversold rap concert in a City College?
This was a walk in the park.

Jesus:

What racism are you referring to?

Isn't it ironic that a Spanish-language TV station captured the video that showed one of the Minutemen kicking the head of a protester?

user-pic

Well I'm a lefty and I think HR is right that these people are hypocrites. They don't stand for the 'lefty' ideals I stand for. Just because HR is a despicable person doesn't mean he can't be right about this.

user-pic

i'm going to agree with HR here (even though i don't condone the minuteman kicking), universities of all places should allow free uninterrupted speach regardless of how unpopular it may be with the rest of the student body. this happens too often at most universities/colleges, esp when it's something seen as 'anti-liberal'

You want conservative views?
got to oral roberts U, or TCU or any of the other Christian leaning, morman, Jesuit etc schools.
The only thing that should of been done was Security removing these people from the stage.
Just like all the other protests you've seen on CNN, CSPAN etc. then the speaker goes on with his speech.
What happened here were the minutemen pussy found this an opportune time to kick some heads.
In street terms , a Cheap shot.

"all lies all the time" - you and others on this post are unfortunately spouting the same rhetoric as the conservatives you disagree with. I think the Minutemen are morons but that does not change the fact that they should be allowed to express their opinions whether you agree with their views or not. Whenever a liberal speech is interupted by conservatives all I hear is cries of free speech but then it's ok for liberals to act the same way? Please.

And as far as only airing conservative views at conservative schools - well that's just ignorant.

user-pic

you people make me ashamed to be liberal. you can't even listen to the other side make their case? you'd rather go to a school that blocks free exchange of ideas? hr may be scum, but he's right. these people only defend free speech if it's their own.

You guys know there are two Minutemen type organizations? right?
Gilchrist is the more racist one.
If you're ashamed to be liberal, then good goody for you.
We are more than happy to listen his case until the racist views and punks came on board.
Please, or as we say in NY, PUHLEEEZE.

dug,
the school did not block the free exchange of ideas...
they invited the mintuemen to speak for crying out loud...
how much more of an affirmation to free speech do you need?
the speech was cancelled due to minutemen violence - is that so hard to understand?

students rushing stages with banners is not a reason to stop a lecture and it wouldn't have stopped the lecture if the minutemen and the college republicans didn't jump right in (as if they were waiting for an exuse to start something) and begin fighting

what kind of liberal bashes his own kind, by the way? ...karl rove's favorite kind -- the ones who defeat themselves.

user-pic

obviously, jason, the school didn't block them, but the loser above me in the thread thinks they should. yeah, let's polarize the nation instead of exchanging opinions. i understand that it's hard to follow a debate when you only want to hear one side.

liberals rushed the stage in an attempt to overpower the message he was invited to give instead of hearing the guy. they were intentionally provocative. that is what i'm ashamed to be associated with. i'm not bashing my own kind, but the small minds that can't bring themselves to the high road and prefer to bash their own cause. they refused to listen because they already 'knew' what he had to say. that is the real self defeat here.

hey i liked this song the first time a lot better. it had a fresh pop to it and the shocking display of overtly partisan lyrics wove a tapestry of post-ironic totalitarian sympathies that really drove home this snapshot of a certain kind of new york life.

this follow-up, however, is bland and seems destined to repeat the kind of "with-us-or-against-us" pastiche of the first without understanding what made it so special in the first place.

Overpower? The banner people were a bunch of girls.
Were people that frightened by them?
Oh, for christ sakes.
See who's doing the Head on a football tee act.
Mr. Blond with the black shirt holding a candlestick in the study.

user-pic

yes, even a 'bunch if girls' chanting and waving banners overpowers an auditorium talk.

was it really liberals rushing the stage or was it a bunch of overly emotional, self-important, immature college students who fashion themselves as liberals? Trying to silence someone is reprehensible and should be condemned, but this act is no more representative of "the way liberals think" than is the college Republican in Michigan who got drunk and punched by a friend of his last week and claimed it was "liberal thugs".

Actually the Minuteman from Wednesday was blond.
The person shown in the Village Voice piece was not even there last week.

"Isn't it ironic that a Spanish-language TV station captured the video that showed one of the Minutemen kicking the head of a protester?"

No. It is clear that the pro-illegal immigration "news organization" chose to play yellow journalists by hacking up their video and playing what works for their agenda.

I want all the video released.

The guy in the village voice looks like the guy in the center doing his muscle flexing and bobbing and weaving getting ready to pop someone, instead he used his punt kick. He wears his trademark baseball cap.
Univision??? yellow journalism? you got to be kidding.
Are we suppose ignore the kicking? Oh, I'm sorry, he was doing an Irish Jig. Did I interupt your concentration, Brad?

It might look that way to you from the low resolution video, but I was there.

He wears his trademark baseball cap.

On of these guys is follicularly impared. The other is not.

Univision??? yellow journalism? you got to be kidding.

What else would you call such blatant editing, which coincidentally leads to a conclusion matching the ideological and economic interests of the station?

Are we suppose ignore the kicking? Oh, I'm sorry, he was doing an Irish Jig.

Nope. I don't condone the over-reaction to a real threat. The Minutemen and their supporters should have been plain martyrs. Sadly, some people act emmotionaly when trying to protect someone from charging Stalinists. (Oops, Trotskyites. Like that matters anymore than Hessites and Hitlerites.)

Did I interupt your concentration, Brad?

Who is Brad?

I oposted my real name unlike some.

Ron

PS. I have gotten considerable hate mail and worse in my day at Columbia FROM STUDENTS.
I din't go crying to lawyers about the mean people at CSSN.

Looks like someone doesn't like "Pulp Fiction".
By the way, a great dialogue movie.
I've found out Brad and his crew were messengers coming to claim the briefcase.

How can you call the students who stormed the stage "liberals" in the first place. They are probably all single-issue people who wouldn't be caught dead unfurling a banner at a rally for jobs for inner city black youth, bush league phone tapping, nuclear weapons issues or anything environmental. It seems to me that most who support illegal immigration and immigrate this way have very conservative viewpoints, at least concerning anything regarding religion, and do not support most liberal causes like women's reproductive choice, gender equality, gay rights, and environmental protections.
The liberals I know may or may not eschew the viewpoints that the minutemen express on illegal immigration but I would say that most at least feel that people on all sides have the right to be heard in a calm clear give and take manner. To storm the stage of someone speaking that you just don't agree with is childish and totally disrespectful of the American ideals we hold dear.
So no, to call these people liberals is a vast stretch.
