Yesterday afternoon, 13 year old Javid Johnson's skull was fractured and leg broken when the horse he was riding suddenly freaked out and threw him into the street. The horse tried to jump over a taxi, but the cab's light "caught the horse and ripped him open," said 12 year old Marquise Jemmott, who was riding another horse. WCBS 2 reported that the horse "broke the windshield as it rolled onto the hood before landing on the ground." The cab's roof and windshield caved in, but the driver was not seriously injured.
The horse was from a stable leased from the Federation of Black Cowboys. And Johnson, who has been riding since he was 5 years old, is recovering at Jamaica Hospital. His mother was wary about letting him ride again, but his father said, "He told me that we should buy him a horse for his birthday."

Call me crazy but allowing 12 and 13 year olds to ride horses alongside a highway doesn't sound like a great idea to me. I'm wondering why something like this hasn't happened sooner. Horses can be tamed but they are still ANIMALS, subject to scares, jumping, spills and other unpredicatable behaviors-- no matter how experienced the young rider was, riding alongside traffic is a recipe for disaster. Leave that to the stuntmen and professional equestrians...
