8th Street Dojo: WE WILL BE BACK!

2006_9_dojo.jpg

JCN spotted this amusing sign at Dojo East-- apparently they've been "temperary" closed because of their health code violations, but they will be "event" better when they return. In related news, the Gothamist editorial staff has begun offering sign-writing services.

If you're really jonesing for an Eastern-influenced diner, you can hit Dojo's West 4th Street location-- that's always been slightly cleaner.

In college I lived on Dojo turkey burgers and roasted potatoes...so good, so cheap.

And, yes, W4th Street is definitely a bit better.

Gothamist is certainly in NO position to offer sign writing services (much less point out typos) until it gets its own spelling & grammar skills at least up to speed. People in glass houses, ya know...

Uh, xnan and hassie, I think Jake made a joke about Gothamist's editing skillz.

Dojo is on St. Marks Place, technically, not 8th St.

Good fucking riddance.
I could never understand why my friends were always trying to drag me to that filthy place.

Learning a language is difficult, no less coming to America and trying to make a living. So they have a few grammatical mistakes on their sign. Big fuckin' deal. Pot, indeed meet kettle.

Yeah that sign reads like half of Jen's articles on Gothamist.

Dojo was a yawn of a restaurant but c'mon guys, the sign is a laugh riot. I only wish the Banterist, Brian Sacks, got to it first. His 'Grammar Cop' is hilarious!!! (Banterist.com)

I didn't know Jen chung moonlights at dojo too. cause that's how she writes and edits. actually gothamist is the worst edited news source in the universe.

"actually gothamist is the worst edited news source in the universe."

and you keep coming back for more?

Maybe the typos and occasional errors are the editors' way of getting you to read closely. Maybe, just maybe, Chung is a genius and has feigned poor editing in order to capture the attention of the hordes who come here to comment on her grammar and make themselves feel smart.

Just like that run-on sentence right there...genius.

To all of you insulting Gothamist...
Why are you reading it???
Idiots.

WHERE WILL NYU STUDENTS EAT??

Seriously.. who's shocked at this? Dojo's is a trash pile that serves trash. Good if you are broke and willing to sit in pain in the fetal position for an hour on the bathroom floor.

We're shocked because it’s in the East Village, and everyone knows that the East Village is the center of the universe.

I use to love the soy burger dinner with cheese, brown rice, and advocado slices. Dojo's and Around the Clock were staples for me back in the college 80s. Haven't been to Dojo's in two years... Around the Clock... gosh, probably ten years. If I remember correctly, they are owned by the same guy.

eat at taisho. or the automat...

As an East Village habitue for more than 20 years, I have always thought Dojo's was the worst food I have ever encountered in Manhattan. Good riddance!

Re: why mock AND read Gothamist

If we only read things that were perfect in every way, we'd never read anything at all. Also: we're bored. But do face the fact: the poor quality of editing at Gothamist is at odds with the image it tries to cultivate as a professional and legitimate news source. It's bad even by blog standards. No one who writes for it is in a position to mock Dojo's English.

LMAO at Jake's offer to write signs.

I thought that shit hole should have been closed by the dept. of Health over a decade ago.
I am suprised more people have not gotten food poisoning from that petre dish.

I have always been baffled how that place stayed open.

I bet it is a new health inspector who was not taking the bribe or it was not a big enough one.

i'm glad that dojo's is shut down. i actually saw a waitress there spit in a friend's sandwich once. that place absolutely sucks.

I still want to say that this Dojo is on St Mark's Place, not 8th Street. 8th Street ends at 3rd Avenue. Just sayin'.

oh and starts again at B after the park. Anyway...

Dojo on 8th street was a dirty hellhole. It's bathroom was filthy, the rest of the place was none too clean and one of the cashiers regularly attmepted to shortchange people.

Dojo on 4th Street is much cleaner. I've eaten there many times and the food is fine -- cheap but effective. The waitstaff is pretty surly too but, eh, I can live with that.
