THEATER: A Room of One’s Own: Women and Power in the New America. This production, which is part of the Impact Festival, is further subtitled “A Multi-Media Interrogation of the Role of Women in the War on Terror”. It is the brain child of Coco Fusco, who convinced retired military interrogators to immerse her and six other women in training courses like “How to Survive Hostile Interrogation” and “How to Interrogate.” The piece, which ends Sunday, incorporates a combination of a PowerPoint presentation (which the military uses for interrogation debriefings) and a simulated live feed from an interrogation room where a male security detainee is prepared for interrogation.

(Saturday’s performance will be preceded by a free 5:00 p.m. screening of Fusco’s critically acclaimed video OPERATION ATROPOS, about her training with former U.S. Army interrogators. A discussion will follow, featuring Jose Muñoz, Chair of Performance Studies, NYU; Anne Norton, Professor of Political Science, U. Penn.; and Mike Ritz, former U.S. Army Interrogator and co-founder of Team Delta.) - John Del Signore

PERFORMANCE: It seems there are a number of free performances happening this weekend at some of the best spaces in Williamsburg. The event is being presented by the nascent Williamsburg Performance Alliance. However, most of the participating venues, such as The Brick and WAX, have scant information about this on their websites. Still, the WPA press release - albeit dated July 24th - insists that audiences “will be encouraged to walk from space to space, casually dropping in on any given performance all day Saturday and all day Sunday, sampling the varied work which these organizations produce year-round. Maps to all participating performance spaces will be given out at the L Train subway stops, with suggested walking routes and venue programming."

This could be a fun adventure in alternative entertainment, and at the right price. Plus, you can't go wrong with an "Alliance" - provided it is for freedom, right? Good old reliable Galapagos maintains that the after-party is ON for Sunday night; they also link to a legible version of the weekend's schedule. - John Del Signore
