2008 Conventions: GOP Takes Twin Cities, Dems to Decide Later

2006_09_nysaysno.jpg

We're not sure if New Yorkers are breathing a sigh of relief or upset not to have some crazy protests, as the Republican party has decided to hold its 2008 convention in Minneapolis/St. Paul. New York City, which hosted the 2004 Republican National Convention, was trying to land the Republican and Democrat conventions for 2008 because money is money. Since Minnesota is considered a swing state, the Democrats were also considering it as a 2008 convention site. But it seems like the Republicans are striking while the iron is hot: Minneapolis' mayor said the city cannot have two conventions.

Now the Democrats get to choose between NYC and Denver (New Orleans withdrew its bid). Will the Democrats choose New York, site of the 1992 convention, or Denver, whose last convention was a 100 years ago?

I vote for Denver. The guy I have a crush on is from there. Seriously I am still recovering from 2004 that shit was wack.

  • Pah

Nobody cares about urban America (politcally, I mean) -- NOBODY. It's this insane national blind spot, and the Dems have it about as badly as the Republicans.

"i see this as yet more proof that repubs only care about people in the flyover states. they're out of touch with urban america."

"i guess it doesn't really matter where the repubs hold their convention. they're kind of finished for the time being, aren't they?"

Oh poor iggy. Just keep thinking that way, worked quite well in 2004. And Repubs have plenty of "bloated rich fat cats" in urban America. They just don't want to admit which way they vote to elitist friends.

Republicans have chosen a swing state surrounded by swing states. Smart move.

Dems would be fools to pick NYC. They were beaten to the punch by Republicans in 2004 and by 2008 the country, seven years after 9/11, will only see a convention in NYC as another example of liberal, east coast elitism. (No matter how bogus that idea is, coming from rich, fat cat Republicans.)

Denver would make a whole lot of sense. It's a swing state more or less. Bloomberg wants the convention because he thinks it's good for businesses (hotels, etc.), but the Dems need to think about what's good for winning elections and not what's good for Bloomberg.

If the Democratic party wants to separate itself from the notion that only hotbed liberals support their causes, they'd do well to set up shop outside of NY or SF.

we have enough disturbances here as it is. The UN General assembly thing is such a pain in the ass for example. PLEASE, no conventions.

i hope they choose Denver, the last convention in 04 still gives me nightmares
