Coney Island Murder Suicide

A father shot his daughter and himself yesterday afternoon. Jose Cordova had called his daughter's mother, threatening to kill their 7 year old, Samantha, on her cellphone's voicemail. The mother then called the police, who found the pair dead in Cordova's 2311 Mermaid Avenue apartment. The police also "found an inert explosive device," leading to the evacuation of the apartment building.

Cordova and his daughter's mother had broken up before the summer, with Samantha living with her mother and spending weekends with her father. It's believed that Cordova was upset his ex was dating someone new. But neighbors and friends are shocked; some told the NY Times they would see Cordova walking Samantha from her mother's home to school in the morning.
