Yankees Crack Down on Online Ticket Reselling

2006_09_yankstad.jpgThe Yankees are taking a hardline against season ticket holders who sell their seats online - the Bombers are cancelling their accounts! One former season ticket-holder complains to the Daily News in a bid to win the forgiveness of George Steinbrenner. The ticket holder had sold his tickets on StubHub twice, so the Yankees "canceled his account, barred him from buying playoff tickets and banned him from getting season tickets - ever again," claiming that the man violated their licensing agreement. So, if George Steinbrenner had issued the verdict himself, he might say, "Read the fine print!"

StubHub says the Yankees are setting up their own ticket resale business next year, hence the difficulties the team is giving resellers of today. Hmm, we wonder how the Yankees' reselling forum will work - will people on the waiting list be able to buy tickets? And this is not the first time NY sports team season ticket accounts have been cancelled due to reselling. Back in 1995, the Giants revoked "the season tickets of 75 seats" from which snow and ice balls had been thrown on field.

The Yankees and Mets are also asking fans to avoid buying post-season tickets online, because they might be fake.

The LA Angels have a similar online reselling thing set up which I used a few years ago. All it does is allow season ticket holders to sell the tickets they can't use. Prices are reasonable because they are limited in how much they can ask for the tickets. I'm assuming the Yankees are setting up something similar.

This guy is only forgiving because he was caught.

If we are getting picky, its actually the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

There is no waiting list for Yankee season tickets

The problem with the resale of tickets is the ongoing debate on whether it is a legitimate business or not.

The other problem is that you cannot return tickets unless the game has not been played.

Yet another problem (New York specific) is that state resale laws are not in effect if the sale takes place outside of NY State. Therefore, most area ticket agencies are in NJ and CT.

eBay does not enforce ticket resale laws either if the buyer and seller are not located in the state of the event...

There is a waiting list for the sold out sections of the stadium, like the club seating.

I am not a fan of stub hub but i hate ticketmaster even more. Stubhub is suing ticketmaster and vice versa. The resale of tickets needs to be regulated. You should be able to resell your tickets but only be able to make a percentage of the cost some of which goes to the venue and artist. Its a compromise that everyone can be happy with. what do you think?
