Off-Duty Cop Dies in a DWI Crash

2006_09_copdwi.jpgRookie police officer Marlene Rivera was killed in a car crash - and the car was driven by her fellow rookie cop Danielle Baymack. When police arrived to accident on the Sunrise Highway in Wantagh early yesterday morning, they smelled alcohol on Baymack and later confirmed it was above the legal limit. Baymack and Rivera, who worked at the 103rd Precinct and had gone through the academy together, were returning from a party in Queens when Baymack's car went into the guardrail. Both had been wearing seatbelts; Rivera was crushed on the passenger side.

Baymack was charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI; she was also suspended without pay from the NYPD. Rivera had lived with her sister's family in Bushwick, and her brother-in-law was very angry. Pepe Gray told reporters that Baymack should have called a cab, "But she didn't do that. She got behind the wheel and killed my sister-in-law."

And in another possibly drunk off-duty incident, an FDNY firefighter responded to a NJ incident, after stealing a NJ firehouse's fire truck.

The Merry Jokester: You're an idiot (But we knew that after seeing your poost).

Gary Jackson: Was yours a rhetorical question? Secondlt, it obviously didn't give the officer the right to DWI - that is why she was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Instead of whining about cops - THANK ONE, or call a fireman when someone rapes your mother.

danielle baymack is a reliable, trustworthy, and caring person...she made a mistake as we all have in the past...she has enough grief in having to deal with this situation...it is a tragic situation that Marlene passed away and condolences go out to her family. however danielle baymack is not a monster and does not deserve to be treated as one.danielle, you be strong..love you.

I only wish that Marlene Rrivera was alive. OK she was a police officer and she e njoyed doing her job, but that still does give her co worker, the right to drive while in toxicated. Peoop

I am personal friends with danielle baymack. she is a great person who has had a hard life. She finally got the life she wanted and she made a mistake. I feel horrible for the person who was killed but danielle is a good person and I also feel bad because now the rest of her life she will have to live with this.

everybody makes mistakes. she isn't a bad person, or a raging alcoholic.

    A post-9/11 joke:

Q: Why is the NYPD New York's finest?

A: Because now you can run them through a sieve.

  • Picador

It's always nice to see New York's finest AND bravest at their best. Time to join the uniformed services...sounds like quite a party.

  • That is a sad story. The other person KNEW she was drunk yet got in the car anyways so...

THIS was quite a quote from that article about the drunk driving cop - "She's just devastated," the cop said. "They were obviously very good friends. She's asking, 'Why did this happen?' "

That's a pretty easy one to answer...
