Mayor Mike's Western Coast Swing

2006_09_bloomenergy.jpgMayor Michael Bloomberg met with California Governor Arnold Schwarzengger in the Golden State yesterday, and it was a total love fest. The Governator told reporters:

[Republicans and Democrats in Congress] are frozen. They can’t get anything done in Washington because it’s Democrats against Republicans and Republicans against Democrats, rather than, ‘Let us solve the problems of this country.’ And so this is why I admire him — I admire Mayor Bloomberg. He’s my soul mate. He’s the man.
Aw - we're sure that the Mayor is making sure all his West Coast friends drop a pretty penny into Arnold's campaign chest, as he did head out there for Arnie's fundraisers. (Oh, and to talk about "issues" too.)

Mayor Bloomberg announced the creation of the Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability, which will work on the city's environmental agenda (Columbia's Earth Institute is one of the advisers). One thing that city is now doing is taking an inventory of how government operations emit carbon dioxide, use electricity, exhaust fumes from vehicles, etc.

The previous day, Mayor Bloomberg met with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to discuss education, but of course the talk turned to 2008. Villaraigosa, a Democrat, implied that he would support the Mayor if he ran for President. Yeah, but Bloomberg needs Heartland support if he wants to win. Which makes us wonder if there are any trips to Chicago planned?

It's almost on topic, but, I'm confused about this whole "let's sue the car manufacturers" thing that Arnie is doing..... does he still drive a Hummer? Isn't this a state with (excepting San Fran), appalling Public Transportation?

It seems a bit two-faced to me, to be sueing the car firms, and yet not having a good public transportation optional alternative for people.

But, maybe I'm completely wrong and would be happy for someone to correct me.

What's the obsession with Arnie? Why hasn't he been ousted yet. Jesus.

bigtime, i'm half with you. however, if car manufactures could have been producing cars with better mileage and lower emissions all along, then the state of california, whether or not it has good public transportation, could sue.

I wonder if Arnie told the chicks behind him that they have that "hot exotic blood, yah..."

This is a great step in the right direction. I hope these promises can be turned into reality soon.

This is really cool - here's hoping something tangible happens before Bloomie leaves office, and that the next Mayor carries this forward and makes it an even stronger initiative.
