Hugo Chavez is Having the Best Week Ever

Venezulan President Hugo Chavez followed up his devilish U.N. appearance with a visit to Harlem's Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where his tirade has earned him a nickname from the NY Post: El Loco. (Yeah, it doesn't quite have the ring of "Wacko Jacko.") Though Chavez's main goal was to announce that he would distribute discounted heating oil to the poor, he took the time to continue his jabs at the Commander in Chief :
Bush "is an alcoholic, a sick man and very dangerous. And he has a lot of power," Chavez said.Apparently the swager was also to make fun of the President being a recovering alcoholic - that's a classy world leader for you!He also said he couldn't wait until Americans elect a new president.
"Some day very soon, the sooner the better, the people of the United States will elect a president with whom we can talk," he said. "Not the one we have right now who looks like John Wayne, with a cowboy hat, and walks like this."
Chavez then stepped away from the podium and walked with a swagger around the stage in a bizarre imitation of Bush.
Chavez's comments have suddenly made Democrats defenders of President Bush. Represenative Charles Rangel said, "You don't come into my country, you don't come into my congressional district, and you don't condemn my President." Yeah, that's American citizens' duties! Senator Charles Schumer said Chavez was "despicable and disgusting," while Governor Pataki, in an appearance at Ground Zero, said, "The best thing he can do is go back to Venezuela and try to provide freedom for his people instead of what he's done here in New York." Former President Clinton said, "Obviously, I think he made a mistake." Reverend Jesse Jackson, who was on hand for the Harlem event, said he "urged [Chavez] to stop [his Bush-related attacks] for his own good."
The NY Times spoke to a very undead Noam Chomsky, who Chavez mentioned in his U.N. speech - and whose book is now number one on Amazon. Chomsky was careful to say that Chavez could have a right to be this angry: "The Bush administration backed a coup to overthrow his government. Suppose Venezuela supported a military coup that overthrew the government of the United States? Would we think it was a joke?” And Chomsky is ready and willing to meet Chavez.

as usual, pataki has no idea what he's talking about. chavez has been elected six times in closely-supervised elections (according to the new york times).
"Though Chavez's main goal was to announce that he would distribute :"
What? Gothamist has been particularly error-filled of late.
While I would not defend what Chavez said, he said it on international ground, technically, and not in Charlie Rangel's district.
If you had read the article you linked to, Rep.Charles Rangel is not a "defender of President Bush," he's simply saying that Chavez's remarks were in poor taste for a foreign dignitary. Stop making everything an "either/or" issue.
What was it Chavez said that was not correct? I can't see getting all upset because somebody says the sky is blue.
g-
Gotta agree with you on the error-filldedness (although not really just of late), but must disagree on the internationalness:
>>>Harlem's Mount Olivet Baptist Church,
is hardly international territroy
#2,
Good point. I still wouldn't call Rangel a "Bush defender," though.
Is Harlem now International ground?
I forgot that it succeeded from the USA.

I'm with #4. Who hasn't done a "Bush is a dumbass cowboy" impersonation.
Ok, maybe it wasn't exactly the right moment for that sort of thing.
I didn't say Rangel was a Bush defender, I'm saying I would not want to defend what Chavez said, however, Rangel is wrong to imply that Chavez's remarks were made in his congressional district. Sorry for not being more clear.
Rangel said:
"You don't come into my country, you don't come into my congressional district, and you don't condemn my President."
Did Chavez make his remarks in Harlem? No, he made it at the UN, which is considered international territory, and under no congressman's jurisdiction. (Hence the outstanding parking tickets that so many delegates seem to owe.)
Since Chavez forcefully took power nothing has changed in Venezuela. In fact, some would argue that conditions of the nation have got progressively worse. On that note (what i wrote yesterday):
It's amazing how Chavez speaks about American dictatorship when Chavez himself amended Venezuela's constitution for his own political gain: The BBC says that Chavez "has made no secret of the fact that he is in favor of amending the constitution so that he can run again for president in 2012. In spite of a presidential term limit of 12 years, according to The Economist, Chávez often suggests that he will remain in power for 25 years."
Chavez is a god-damned hypocrite and although Bush may be a bad US president, Chavez is in no place making "dictatorship" or devilish bad president comments. He used Bush's bad presidency as a platform to spew his hate-filled messages.
oops...confused his un speech with the church speech. my bad.
>>Is Harlem now International ground?
I forgot that it succeeded from the USA.

Seceded, not succeeded.
I am amazed Chavez didn't add Bush's faux Texas accent to his list.
Hugo Chavez was a military officer who attempted to seize office through a coup himself, was rebuffed, and spent several months in jail. Now he is a populist demigogue, who will probably (and has gone in this direction) elect himself leader for life, a la Castro. You can say shitty things about Bush to one's heart's content, but he will be gone in two years. Chavez will remain the dictator he is for decades. His criticism should be qualified as such: that of a crackpot tinpot dictator; free to criticize and be a malafactor, but still the boot on the neck of the people he professes to liberate, but instead opresses.
Bush Rocks! he is taking the appropriate actions. He is cleaning up all of Clintons crap. Bush is a stud.
I have a new found respect for those Democratic leaders that were able to put aside party differences and support the president. Well done. As far as "closely supervised" elections are concerned, you are blind as Oedipus to the reality that stands before you. I still after all these years fail to see what the heck is so bad about this president and this presidency? At least he did not desecrate the oval office with a stained blue dress and then lie about it as well as his drug use. At least with the president, he is open and straight, to a fault.
Good comments made by Chavez, the only man with courage to speak out against Bush. His speech was against Bush and not against Americans at all. We all know what is happening in world due to the adventures of Bush Administration. Are we making the world peaceful for living or we are making it like hell? Hundred of people are killing due to the Bush's personal agendas. It is crystal clear that two wrongs cannot make on right. And Chavez is also not good. We have to think about people, about Americans and their lives. Chomsky is a good writer and renowned all over the world.

Why does every message out of every mouth get spun, distorted, destoyed by the media and EVERYONE else. Start listening for intention. Content can always be manipulated without context...
What he's really saying is that 'Bush is an alcoholic', which is admittedly true. Alcoholism is an disease, which is also true, hence making Bush a 'sick man'. And that Bush is a 'dangerous man', which is based on his point that 'he has a lot of power.
His point makes a lot of sense and is a point missed, I believe, by most. His point: maybe tempting an alcoholic (who will always be an alcoholic) with something else that can be abused (like power) is not only a bad idea but a dangerous one.
Also, If we live in a global economy that has a need to attract corporate dollars to empowerment zone commuities, Harlem is international ground.
"At least he did not desecrate the oval office with a stained blue dress and then lie about it as well as his drug use."
Please tell me you are kidding.
Our current president only "desecrated" the office by starting an illegal war leading to the deaths of thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis.
I ask you which is worse: a joint and a stained dress or the deaths of tens of thousands. Which would YOU rather have on your conscience?
Chavez only wants attention from the world. In ten days he will be forgotten. George Bush will have the powerful countries, not Venezuela,
licking his boots again. Isn't it
great to be from the land of the free.
What a LOSER Chavez is. He is small time. Carry on!!!!
Go home to Venezuela Chavez and take the illegal immigrants with you.
_______________ By the way
g: he continued his disrespect in Harlem. Chavez is on drugs. He kept ranting about Cocaine, opps, the CoCa plant.
Bumbaclaut> you can't call yourself that AND praise Bush. Please change one way or the other.
If the African leader, Idi Amin, the former
army officer and President of Uganda came over to the USA, United Nations meeting and told white Americans and George Bush that they are still treating black Americans in a
devilish manner; all of America's response wouls be different. The people on this board, especially white, hispanic and latino, people would react differently. I have a feeling that all of the white people on the board would side with Bush. Calling him a good ole boy that knows what he is doing.
All of you who are not supporting George Bush on the board are hypocrites.
Would Idi Amin be holding a meeting at the St Patrick's Cathedral continuing his rants before white and latino people? I don't think so.
Rangel said Chavez is "free to criticize President Bush when he is in Venezuela, but I don't believe he has the right to come here and insult President Bush in this country any more than President Bush could verbally abuse him while on Venezuelan soil."
Chavez needs to stop trying to exploit black people. He should stay out of Harlem. I can't believe the blacks let him in. Why they would let themselves be used like that is beyond me.
Crown Hts: maybe you could try to be a little more clear. What is it you are trying to say?
Buddha loves Chavez...
Crown Hts: You shouldn't brag about the association with Crown Hts. The place does not have a very good reputation.
Don't let me get started girl. (fingers waving and snapping, neck wave)
You can barrow the name if that is what you are getting at.
So do Muslims. Nobody said he wasn't loved.
We are commenting on his big mouth.
Hugo Chavez is free and at least he speaks what he feels is right.
Too many Americans are too afraid to speak up and be actually question.
I think its time for us to be free
http://www.personaltao.com/tao/freedom.htm
The current government has a track record of lies, and snipe hunts for WMD's. Calling anyone who doesnt agree with policy a terrorist.
Should America just be comfortable and go on snipe hunts, or should Americans stand up and be themselves first and foremost before forcing our views on others??
Chavez stills from us the poor in Venezuela to give oil to poor americans. Presidential elections in Venezuela are next December and 20% of the Venezuelans support him. (40% of the voters are leftists because they are lazy and live day to day stealing or getting paid from the goverment just to fo) The majority of all Venezuelans (50% are under 18 and the 60% of the voters) know that Chavez is a pupet of Fidel Castro. Castro infiltrated Chavez in the Venezuelan Military in the 60s to fund with oil his horrible comunist ways.
Chavez or Fidel should be using the oil money to help the poors in Venezuela and Cuba instead they all are folowing the Kremlins pattern (see Forbes list of the wealthier people and find out the number of russian's oil guys are in the list)
Venezuelans Love peace and having fun, We dont want do mess with no one we love everyone, we are the largest mestizo society on earth.
GBY
Maybe with a name like bumbaclaut, you should watch what you write about Crwon heights. You call yourself bumbaclaut, so I assume you know what it means. But clearly you don't if you don't understand that Bumbaclaut and Crown Heights are inextricably linked in the minds of W. Indians, bumbaclaut.
If you really care about treputation, you're not nearly as intelligent as your search engines would indicate you are.
Regardless of what anyone thinks of Chavez the man, or Chavez the president, most of what he said was true. Bush IS a danger to the world. Bush DOES act like a cowboy. Bush DOES act like he owns the world. Truly. And then he threw is some opinionated/humorous/juvenile attacks. So what? Bush tried to overthrow his government, as has been mentioned here previously. Chavez has issues, sure, but that doesn't make everything he says crazy talk. He actually made a positive impression on me, overall, with his behavior this week. It is sad that our own "opposition party" is so weak that we need someone like Chavez to say these things.
Why get mad at someone simply for criticizing or making fun of Bush? "Well, he's OUR president so only we can make fun of him?" The whole world makes fun of him. Our whole country makes fun of him. Except for a certain group of hardcore ideologues that are his baseline support and wouldn't care if he ate a small child on the south lawn. So who cares if Chavez joined the party? Let's not have some silly nationalistic reaction to that. And it isn't just silly, but dangerous, because we continue to allow "our leaders" to redefine language and discourse in such a way that everything is either/or (either I condemn Chavez's remarks or I'm against America, etc.)
Also, for those that don't know, there is a big difference between Coca leaves and cocaine. The former are milder than caffeine and have been chewed by south american peoples for thousands of years. The latter is a dangerous, destructive, man-made drug.
I think its funny how the author tries to make fun of chavez "now that's a classy leader for you' but it sounds like he is agreeing with chavez about bush, I imagine they are both alcoholics and are, if nothing else addicted to power and attention... that's not bad either, just human. Lets stop paying attention to what either one 'says' and watch what they do.
We are Venezolanos living in Venezuela that want to apologize to the American People for the entropy that HUGO wants to create. He only has created fear and mistrust among the Venezuelan people and wants to do the same all around the world.

I didn't know the poor in Venezuela had access to computers?
viva la revoluzion!
Karl Rove must be responsible for this. What more can the Republicans ask for? An outrageous insult to our President, the ugly Left clapping their hands for a revolting dictator - looks like liberals are digging their own graves yet again.
Hey Nola, sweetie, can we put you in that grave as well? Oh wait... you may be too busy dancing in it...
Nola--
A definition of "ugly left" would be most appreciated.
j
I did not know that the left were Chavez's booster club.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/9/22/11130/1428
Are "liberals" this big homogenous glob? Are all Republicans in favor of the madness that is going on right now? I can't stand such dualistic use of language--the way you use them, Nola, the words "republicans" and "liberals" have almost zero meaning, other than what we can think you meant to imply.
finally - someone spoke the truth...
was Jesus wrong when he called the Pharisees and Saducees a "brood of vipers?"
I don't think so...
Chavez just said what most of the rest of the world is thinking.
He's milking his constituency back home, just like any other politician.
Wonder what Other books get promoted by President Chavez next?
bumbaclaut is just fine. I have problem with it's meaning. Just because you think in nasty terms does not mean that I subscribe to your definition. It's all a part of the body and life. Weren't you born via a bumbaclaut? What's the problem? Life?
However, you should read the context of my response before jumping on the bandwagon Miquel.
And if I chose to make reference to Crown Hts in the negatve, then I shall do so as often as I please.
Hey Margaret: Jesus was talking to the Jews. And furthermore, Chavez is not a lowly citizen looking for the answers to life. He is just as power hungry other politicians. He is a wanna be. He certainly AINT Jesus.
Why don't you go enlist in the military and help
change the world instead of sitting around complain about the world leader.
I am certain you could make more sound decisions under scrutiny and pressure. NOT...LOL!!!!
T: "former are milder than caffeine and have been chewed by south american peoples for thousands of years."
Maybe that is their problem. Too much of a good thing.
"coldhand", Have you enlisted?
Margaret: How do you know what the rest of the world is thinking? You need to come up with a better justification for the actions of Chavez and his big mouth.
You just don't know what you are talking about because you have no facts to substantiate your comments. Nor do you know what motivates other world leaders.
Where did you get your information, Time Magazine or the International Inquirer?
poor venezuelans dont have their own computer they work in an oil refinery with an engineering degree for 200 dollars a month.
On the other hand the lazy poors are frequently lefty and dream with their goverment doing everything for them.
A real revolution would be to educate everyone in the world.
Your friend from the High School Avalos. from the getho El Valle in Caracas Venezuela, we are all poor here in El Valle Caracas, take a look one day
It's funny listening to the media and politicians get upset at someone denouncing Bush when they do it daily.
I say bravo to President Chavez. I wish I could have seen him first hand.
So much humor in the whole thing, esp. Gov. Pataki saying the best thing Chavez can do is go home and provide "freedom" to his people. That sounds like the war cry that our government always uses prior to invasion.
S.D.: seven years in baby doll. Want to see my big gun?
Once again,
Viva La revoluzion!
More power to you my fellow bros and sisters in venezuela.
You keep watching Fox news on your satelite flores.
a girl named Rock:
When other countries invade the USA, what are you gonna do?
When someone in your neighborhood puts you family down do you agree with them. If a neighbor called your mother disrepectful names would you agree with them? Probably not. The principle is the point I am getting at.
It is not about what Chavez said. It is about his audacity to speak so candidly while he is a guest in this country. That is very disrespectful. He would have been more respected had he spoke with intelligence and with words that make any person want to take his thoughts as those he had integrity.
He can not throw stones if he lives in a glass house.
Chavez chose to speak in New York City because he knows that this is a Democratic city for the most part. He has tried to PUNK New Yorkers. He is playing NYC. Some New Yorkers are falling into his trap.
coldhand, your intellectual superiority and facility with humor was amply demonstrated by your NOT! and subtle gun/penis jokes.
We all tip our hats to your genius.
Chavez spoke the truth; this country is being run by a stooge who's going to drag us all down to hell with him.
Donate to dems in tough races this year through actblue.com . . . kick the bums out!
Brooklynite: Oh great one. You are more superior. Who is we...?
Speak for yourself. Is it not possible for you to stand alone and say something. Who is "WE?" Who elected you leader in the cause of pro or anti Chavez?
Frued said sometimes an orange is just an orange.
He was not expert, but he had a point here and there. A penis is just a penis and a gun is just a gun.
"...your intellectual superiority and facility with humor..."
You are the genius if you are seeing so much. I see no humor in the misguided perspective of the people on this blog site. Especially the Americans. It is not the leaders who will bring America down. It will be the mis guided people who don't know when to be loyal.
Ugolino (Ugo Chavez) He's just a loud wanna be dictator who has come over here to make noise. He is posturing like a proud rooster. What a way to divert the attention of the people of Venezuela (and the attention of many delegates at the UN) away from the fact that, under the false actions to nationalize his country's resources and major industries, he has made himself virtually President for Life and done away with many of their civil liberties. I have seen his like before--his antics reminded me of the old days at the UN, when Nikita Kruschev banged his shoes on the table and Fidel Castro played the strutting cock. Good gracious, remember Yassir Arafat lecturing the UN General Assembly in his combat fatigues?
But Chavez isn't half as smart as Castro was. It's one thing to pretend that you're picking a fight with President Bush when you're over on the East Side; it's quite another to come up to a church in Harlem and use the same language about him. It takes quite a bit to make Charlie Rangel mad! Chaves is a bumbling idiot.
At least we can all agree that it is not some unnamed, unknown foreigners that will bring America down. It's the Americans. Phew. I was worried there for a sec. Now we just need to figure out which ones.
Thank god for the true progressives like Chavez that actually have the guts to say the truth unlike most democrats that play touch while the republicans play tackle. Let's see republicans supported Osama, Sadam, Installed Pinochet, supported Noriega, supported Somosa for nearly 40 years while he raped Nicaragua as long as he was doing biz with them, installed the Shaw of Iran, ran death squads that killed thousands of women children nuns and priests in Central America, supported the Murderous dictator Rios Mont of Guatemala, expelled the democratically elected president of Haiti etc. When some of these dictators no longer wanted the riches of their countries to go to rich Republicans, Republicans suddenly notice the undemocratic atrocities that they commit and attack them. Republicans are racists and godless to think that the resources and riches of other lands belong to billionaire international businesses and not the people that live in those countries. Chavez just spoke about the tip of the icebergh. Take Chavez's advice and read Chomsky to educate your selfish selves. Also read Confessions of an economic Hit man.
For truth about Republican foreign policy try:

Well said Gilberto, it pleases me to see that all of America is not awash in the kinds of ignorance and idiocy posted on this and other sites ad infinitum, ad nauseum. While I'm at it, they should also take the time to read Eduardo Galeano's "Open Veins of Latin America." Learn what our country has been up,a nd this people is just in the Southern Hemisphere!! America is not like you. Don't extrapolate your own sense of personal decency and goodness onto your government. They are not one and the same thing, sorry. A government of the people and by the people never existed in America, and it never will. Think about it well.
exactly, The US had been messing around with Central and South America since the days of the bay of pigs.
Anyone remember Iran/contra?
