Not that I'm an expert by any means, but through the years I have had two different friends that have lived on 2nd St between B an C. When the first moved to California, the second moved in.
So I've had four year of delivery Bahn mi from Nicky's. Recently the second has also moved to Cali...anyobody know anyone at The Villager?
Krista - you think hobos have can openers? No way! Hobos stay with sardines because the little tab makes em easier to open. Haven't you ever seen Pee Wee's Big Adventure?
Some very tasty and cheap bahn mi can be found on 8th Ave, in Sunset Park brooklyn. At $3 a pop it's probably the best deal going for lunch and/or dinner.
There are different variations on the sandwich by the way and some of them don't use pate.
Bruce, I know it's probably hard for you to keep up, but I'm not arguing whether it's wrong to eat animals or not, so don't freak out, no one is trying to slap that burger out of your grubby little hands.
The argument is whether it might be wrong to force-feed an animal, that is, to shove abnormal amounts of food down their throat with a steel tube. If you can follow along, maybe try discussing the issue from there.
Would you be willing to do it yourself? Regularly torture a bird over a period of several months just for some extra greasy organ meat? I'll bet you would find it pretty repulsive in real life, and less defensible if you were out from behind your keyboard.
Extra greasy organ meat- yum- just the way I like it!
And no- I have no intension of forcefeeding the goose myself- just as I dont make my own clothes, grow my own wheat or whatever- bad arguement.
dudes, the pate in question ain't foie gras. first off, you think the sandwich would be so cheap with foie gras shmeared inside? secondly, pate can just be made with the organ parts of any animal ground up. i'd assume that the bahn mi pate is some concoction of ground up pig parts. not necessarily appetizing when you think hard about it, but tasty. fois gras is a whole different animal-both figuratively and literally. so go out an eat those bahn mis!!!
personally, my fave is the first i ever had at ba xuyen. tried some of nicky's at the antic saturday. not bad and the bread was good and crusty. i hear there's some real good bahn mi to be had in the weird mall under the manhattan bridge.
milo
You obviously make assumtions and are narrow minded. I grew up on a farm in thailand where it is normal to slaughter your own food and i have done it to eat nearly all the meat the animal provides. I wont eat dog but you can go to china and sit down and pick the one you want to eat. Horses in korea. Monkeys you name it. Whats that, you cringing about that duck now. So why would i pay to take the time to force feed ducks when i can afford to buy it from a farmer. How bout worring about the people in darfur than ducks raised to be eaten.
bruce, you make far more assumptions that I, but how exciting for you to have sampled the wide world of meats, not really relevant, but thanks for sharing.
Whats that, you cringing about that duck now.
The whole "if you don't eat meat than you're obviously a pussy" element is so damn boring I almost gave up right after that, suffice it to say I'm not cringing about the ducks, and that might be the lamest element of your already lame argument.
In this day and age we really should practice the humane treatment of all creatures. If for no other reason then because sometimes, when people learn respect for animals and their environment, as well as understanding their own small place on the planet, it can lead to compassion for their fellow man and an urge to improve their conditions (not just "worring"). Try putting that in your narrow-minded pipe and smoking it.
(Anyway as tim just said this isn't about foie gras and I'm pretty bored with the standard canned debates anyway, so I'm going to move on, but go ahead and make sure you post the last words so you can win!)
milo, although i don't think you're a sissy for your concern about geese and animals in general (i myself have never had foie gras, partly because i'm cheap, partly the geese issue), the whole debate was started because you saw "pate", thought "foie gras", and gave us all a moral warning: "Seriously, reconsider."
i don't think you can complain about the "standard canned debate" that you started with an assumption of your own (the very thing you decry). also what else could you expect but the "standard canned debate" when you made your initial post?
i'm not taking sides (i think bruce's defense was flawed as well), just admonishing you a bit in light of your high horse comment to back out and let bruce "win".
And what, exactly, is the "standard canned debate"? There seems to be a wider array of arguments for foie gras (these ducks/geese are bred as food, deaths from gavage are rare, the birds don't seem to mind that much, etc.) than against: it's cruel. Period.
To me, that's not even a discussion, never mind an argument, that's moralizing.
Also, to use your logic, any continuation of this debate is just trying to have the "last word" in the interest of winning.
Nicky's banh mi sandwhiches are a rip-off and tiny. There is a new banh mi shop on mulberry and canal street that sells more authentic sandwhiches for 2.75.
Tim,
Unless you're referring to another joint, the Banh Mi shop nestled underneath the Manhattan Bridge has long since moved to Mott Street, and is called Saigon Banh Mi. Although they make a great sandwich, and seem to be the consensus favorite among many, I still prefer the sandwiches at Ba Xuyen, if, for no other reason, that the bread is that much fresher and crispier. Plus, you can get great shakes at Ba Xuyen - so cold that your heart will hurt - including, if you dare, the Durian Shake.

A layer of pate, gross! That is a dark secret!
Maybe you haven't seen how that crap is made. Seriously, reconsider.
Milo - if God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of such tasty meat.
Nothing beats the Pork-chop sandwich from Nicky's. And nothing sounds worse than the sardine sandwich. Who's that for anyway? Hobos?
What's wrong with a sardine sandwich? Hobos would eat a pork and beans banh mi (I mean, if one existed).
wasn't the Nicky's in Brooklyn the parent of the EV Nicky's?
Milo - if God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of such tasty meat.
Wow, Arnold, you are so amazingly original!
You know I have never heard that before.
(by the way, do you ever have any thoughts that are not just quotes of redneck bumper stickers? or are those pretty much your life maxims?)
Krista - you think hobos have can openers? No way! Hobos stay with sardines because the little tab makes em easier to open. Haven't you ever seen Pee Wee's Big Adventure?
milo have you ever eaten foie gras. its fracken delicious right next to kobe beef. if you havent then shut up. its possible that plants have feelings too

so are you going to stop eating them?

I concur with #14---Ba Xuyen over Nicky's. Crusty cilantro generous goodness.

Thank you, Tim. I was just about to clarify that there's no way that the pâté on a $4 sandwich would contain foie gras.
I'll just stay out of the foie gras argument this time around...
An intensely delicious vegetarian version of Bahn mi can be found at Lan Cafe on 6th Street. They actually have 3 or 4 versions. Yummy!
